Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Canterbury Here is a time in the lives of most men and more women when the veriest trivialities are not only pleasing but act upon the system as healing balm. To enjoy life, work is a necessity, and there is nothing much truer than the state ment that he is most miserable who has nothing to do. I well remember a gentleman, who having retired in Canterbury from a successful London business, on more than one occasion begging me to find him some work in my office, which he would gladly do without payment for a few hours every day. (to thoroughly understand a builder's business is the business of a life-time, and those who have not been apprenticed to it are not likely to find much in it but trouble and vexation.) My private opinion is that this good man died for want of employment at least thirty years before he need have done. Some men have to kill time, which is indeed a strange expres sion to those who lead a life of happiness simply through finding so much to do for other people while doing what is necessary for themselves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Chronicle of the Archbishops of Canterbury The prominent part played in English history by the arch bishops of Canterbury is a striking proof of the dominating influence exercised by the Christian Church in the making of our state and nation. Throughout many centuries few political or social crises occurred in our history in which the ruling successor of St. Augustine did not take a leading part. Though in this long line of illustrious prelates stretching from the sixth to the twentieth century many were justly accused of being led through ambition to neglect ecclesiastical for state affairs, yet of few can it be said that they died faithless at heart to the Church they served. Take half of eight; twice two, or four times one, And see how different halves in form may run, When equal area's not of equal length, While equal size may have unequal strength; A whole mob's wisdom often will not reach To half of what one learned sage can teach; When two take halves in sharing wisdom, it Not follows they take equal shares of wit; And, two wits being equal, oft we find Their gifts unequal; so wills Fortune blind; And then, again - stop, lest my brain, o'erwrought, Should find its travelled farther than it ought. Thus thought I, as, in fancy, once I went Along that pleasant road in fertile Kent That's known as Watling Street. I rode a horse That lightly carried me along the course; Though you'll say I did ne'er on horseback act; But this is fancy; don't forget that fact. My head, with gloomy lumbering thought opprest, So heavy grew, it drooped upon my breast; It had, with heavier thought, dropped at my feet, And thought no more; 'tis thus extremes do meet. When, on a sudden, a sharp clattering sound Of hoofs disturbed my thought, and, looking round, I saw, swift coming onward, and with force, A heavier man than I, a heavier horse About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canterbury As we stand upon the summit of Bell Harry Tower - more happily called the Angel Steeple of Canterbury Cathedral, looking down upon city and countryside, much of the history of England lies spread beneath our feet: the Britons were at work here before the Romans came marching with their stolid legions here to Ethelbert, Saxon King of Kent, St Augustine preached the gospel of Christ; in the church below, Becket was murdered and the Black Prince buried; to this city, to the shrine of St Thomas, came innumerable pilgrims, one of them our first great English poet; then the crash of the Reformation swept away shrines and pilgrims, the mirk and romance of mediaeval ism vanished into the mists of history, and the city to-day lives chie y in the past. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canterbury: A Historical and Topographical Account of the City In 1884, the year after his translation from Truro to Canterbury, I was asked by Dr. Edward White Benson to write a short history of the City of Canterbury, as the Archbishop was not able to lay his hands on any one book that gave the information that many desired to have. Such a request I regarded almost as a command, more especially as Dr. Benson had rendered me much kindly service at the time when he was Chancellor of Lincoln, and when I had occasion to frequently consult the chapter muniments of that minster. The project, however, through stress of other work, got no further than a scheme of procedure, which was submitted to the Archbishop and met with his approval, and the collection of some material. Since that time the local guide-books have materially improved, and the idea of this small book had been abandoned, until - nearly twenty years after - my friend Professor Windle, in arranging a series of books on old English towns for Messrs. Methuen, asked me to undertake the volume on Canterbury. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Edmund, Archbishop of Canterbury: His Life, as Told by Old English Writers But this period formed only a comparatively small part of his life. To mention only one other side of his work, St Edmund's life as student and teacher at Paris and Oxford, and his influence on the future destiny of the latter University, and in preparing the way for the advent of the Friars, would alone give him a place among the most interesting of our saints. The time he spent as preacher of the Crusade, and in missionary labours, has likewise an interest of its own. The object aimed at in the following pages, then, is to present a picture of the saints own life as it appeared to his contemporaries in Catholic England, and in their own words, and so to obtain at first hand a glimpse of the religious life of our Catholic ancestors. The sources from which to draw for this purpose are happily abundant, for although in modern times the memory of St Edmund has to a great extent died out amongst us, it was not so in the Middle Ages. He seems to have been one of the most popular of our saints, and his life has been written and re-written many times. The work of selecting suitable extracts so as to form a continuous story, has of course involved much thought: it is hoped that in the result a fairly complete picture of the saint has been afforded. Moreover, St Edmund himself was thoroughly English in mind and character. "St Edmund's life is worth studying" (writes Bishop Hedley), "for this reason among others, that it is almost the only example that we have of medieval Catholic piety displayed in a thoroughly English character." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Augustine of Canterbury In drawing up a Chronological Table for the reader's convenience, it is necessary to say that only some of the dates are certainly fixed, but these occur at intervals which form a skeleton table into which the other dates can be intercalated without fear of any considerable error. The History of St. Augustine's Monastery by William Thorn, a monk of that house in 1397, gives the following dates: - Augustine sent to England, 596; Baptism of Ethelbert, Pentecost, 597; Augustine consecrated, 16th November 597; Received the Pall, 601; Augustine died, 26th May 605; Ethelbert and Bertha kept Christmas at St. Augustine's, 605; Abbot Peter died, 607; Laurentius consecrated the Abbey Church, 613; and died, 614; Ethelbert died, 616; Justus died, 635; Honorius died, 643; Deusdedit died, 664; Theodore appointed to the bishopric, 670.
