Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the University of Cambridge Although the present volume appears as one of a series especially designed to illustrate Church History, the writer has not sought to modify the treatment of the subject in order to establish its claim to a place in such a category. The following sketch will suffice to show that it was in the University of Cambridge that the Reformation in England had its real commencement; that it was there that Puritanism first assumed a distinct organisation, and at the same time encountered the mo6t effective resistance; that it was there also that a movement which most materially influenced the religions thought of the seventeenth century, - the teaching of the Cambridge Platonists, - took its rise and made its most important contributions to the cause of freedom and toleration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Riverside Press: Cambridge Massachusetts The plates ready for printing are taken through a subway which con neets the main building with the press-rooms. They are made up into forms of eight pages or multiples and placed on the bed of a suitable press. The ink is carried over the face of the plates by rollers. The paper is supplied either by hand or by a mechanical feeder, and after going through the press and receiving the impression, it emerges at the opposite end, printed on one side. The same routine applies to the other side of the sheet. The famous printers of the old days found that by moistening the paper before printing on it, a clearer, better impression of the type was made, and in the highest grade of letter-press work done at Riverside this process is still in vogue, although it involves additional work and expense. He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. It has been suggested to me that an article on Richard Owen, in a series devoted entirely, with that exception, to Cambridge men, needs justification. I would urge in my defence that the Senate coopted Owen by selecting him, in is59, as the first recipient of an honorary degree under the new statutes. Its purpose is to Show the conditions of medieval England Which shaped the University in its beginnings, and the intellectual needs which, in successive centuries, it was the aim of its benefactors and the founders of its colleges to satisfy. In the chapters which deal with post-reforma tion times I have made no continuous survey of the life and studies of the University, but have aimed at showing its character at certain epochs in its history, and its influences on some of its most eminent sons who have carried those influences into national Spheres of science or letters. Incidentally I have endeavoured to present a picture of men and manners at Cambridge at the time when it was known to each of these great men, and of scenes in college courts and. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Cambridge and New This brief sketch of a few among the memorable antiquities of Cambridge was published in the July number of the New-England Historical and Genealogical Register. Under the impression that it may possess some interest for a wider circle than the readers of that Journal, with the consent of the editor it is now issued in a separate form. Some few additional particulars which have since been collected or which it seemed desirable to mention with a view to obtaining more full information with regard to them for future use, have been appended. Circumstances altogether accidental first attracted the attention of the writer to the by-gones of New-England. Being in some respects favorably placed for the study of the subject, he listened rather to his own taste and inclination than to the suggestion forced constantly upon his mind that there were other antiquarians in the community far better qualified than himself to do it justice. He is not unmindful of what they have accomplished, or many more who have already finished their course. lie realizes that their abundant knowledge and superior ability have only been restrained by innate modesty and conscientious thoroughness from the field upon which he has ventured. Nothing indeed but the profoundest conviction that valuable information with regard to former days is constantly passing out of mind which future generations will be glad to possess and which no one else shows any disposition to preserve, could make him bold enough to brave the censure of the critical in lending a helping hand to rescue it from oblivion. All are ready to admit that private life, with its varied interests and pursuits, is an important subject for study, not of course entitled to the same consideration as the course of political events, the province of the regular historian, but both alike contributing to a thorough knowledge of the past. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's Guide to the University of Cambridge So many and such important changes have taken place in the curriculum of the University during the last few years that the revision of this volume has practically involved the rewriting of several of the sections. Not only has the scope of some of the examinations been much altered but also the regulations under which they are held, and a new Tripos - for Medieval and Modern Languages - has also been instituted. In most cases the revision has been intrusted to the same hands which originally contributed the various sections but where this has been impracticable the matter of the previous edition has been freely used. The issue of the volume has been delayed in order that certain new regulations which were under consideration might be included and though it can hardly be expected that no further alteration will be required it is hoped that the book in its present form will supply a trustworthy guide to students and that a new edition will be called for before any further important changes become necessary.
