Der Fokus dieser Dissertation ist auf zwei wichtige Bereiche ausgerichtet: Personalmanagement und Tierseuchenmanagement. Im Bereich des Personalmanagements wird die Arbeitszufriedenheit familienfremder landwirtschaftlicher Mitarbeiter anhand eines weiterentwickelten Modells nach Neuberger und Allerbeck untersucht. Beim Tierseuchenmanagement werden die ökonomischen Konsequenzen im Falle eines Tierseuchenausbruchs am Beispiel der Schweinepest in Deutschland analysiert. Die wichtigsten Grundlagen der Berechnungen bilden hierbei epidemiologische Daten und Angaben zu fünf Kostenblöcken entlang der Wertschöpfungskette „Schwein“, die mit Hilfe des dazu eigens entwickelten IT-basierten relationalen Datenbank-Managementsystems, des Tierseuchen-Entscheidungs-Unterstützungs-Systems (TEUS), quantifiziert und bewertet werden.

Dazu kommt, dass große Nahrungsmittelkonzerne die Strategie verfolgen, die gesamten Wertschöpfungsketten im Landwirtschafts- und Nahrungsmittelbereich zu vereinheitlichen – wohlgemerkt unter ihrer Kontrolle. Das Buch thematisiert ökonomische Fragen zur Nahrungsmittelproduktion, zurLandwirtschaft, zum Handel mit Nahrungsmitteln und zur Biodiversität. Dabei werden Alternativen zur traditionellen Landwirtschaft, zur Massentierhaltung, zum Verlust an biologischer Vielfalt diskutiert – und aus wirtschaftlicher Sicht reflektiert. Besonderes Augenmerk liegt dabei auf Aspekten der Globalisierung.
