Einerseits werden mit den Content Management Systemen als elektronischen und multimedial vernetzten Plattformen im Internet seitens der Medienunternehmen große Hoffnungen verbunden, da mehr Motivation für die Rezipienten durch Medienwechsel zu erwarten ist. Andererseits bringt der CMS-Einsatz die Internetauftritte auf den neuesten technischen und gestalterischen Stand. Da für die Medienorganisationen Kommunikation die zentrale Leistungskomponente ist, wird von ihnen mehr als von allen anderen Unternehmen erwartet, dass sie sich wie selbstverständlich der neuen Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien bedienen und dieses auch besonders ansprechend in der Optik und besonders ausgefeilt in der technischen Umsetzung tun. D.h. den Medien wird eine Vorreiterrolle diesbezüglich zugesprochen, die jedoch auch von besonders hohen Erwartungen begleitet wird. Darüber hinaus, im Zuge des New Economy Booms der Jahre 2000 und 2001, führten die neuen Distributionsmöglichkeiten des Internet zur Idee, Inhalte mehrfach zu verwenden. Zum einen aufgrund der Digitalisierung und der weitreichenden Speichermöglichkeiten stehen einmal produzierte Inhalte dauerhaft zur Verfügung und können für eine Vielzahl von Plattformen genutzt werden.
