Instead, she was awakened at 6 a.m. by a phone call that would change her life forever. She shares the joys and drama of raising children, coping with life changes, and the importance of faith. Janell walks through the darkest season of her life in an emotionally raw, heartfelt, and honest description of losing a child and dealing with grief, guilt, and heartache. Through her journey, her faith in God is evident as she shares the hope of heaven, the assurance of salvation, and the grace and peace that can only come from a relationship with Jesus Christ. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On August 19, 1958, Clara Luper and thirteen Black youth walked into Katz Drug Store in Oklahoma City and sat down at the lunch counter. When they tried to order, they were denied service. As they sat in silence, refusing to leave, the surrounding white customers unleashed a torrent of threats and racial slurs. This first organized sit-in in Oklahoma—almost two years before the more famous sit-ins in Greensboro, North Carolina—sparked other demonstrations in Oklahoma and other states. Behold the Walls is Luper’s engrossing firsthand account of how the movement she helped launch ended legal racial segregation. First published in 1979, Behold the Walls now features a new introduction and 33 newly selected historical photos. Luper’s direct, unvarnished account captures the immediacy of the events she witnessed. As a Black woman, Luper refused to let either racism or sexism deter her from stepping forth as a leader. Born in 1923, Clara Luper taught history in Oklahoma public schools and led the NAACP Youth Council. The students who sat in at Katz Drug and other businesses belonged to that organization. Luper highlights the contributions of others, especially young people, in breaking down the walls of segregation in Oklahoma through numerous demonstrations, marches, and voter registration campaigns. This commemorative edition of Luper’s eye-opening autobiography, published near what would have been her 100th birthday, as well as the 65th anniversary of the sit-ins, offers invaluable insight into the history of protest in the early years of the civil rights movement. With racial inequality still at the forefront of national debate, Behold the Walls places Luper’s efforts in the larger national context of the struggle to resist injustice and inspire positive change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How would you like to join me on an unbelievable ride? Let us take a ride on a mystical wooden kiddie roller coaster as we travel thru my dash (you know, that line that separates, the date you were born and the date that says you, died) to, re-live my experiences, when I went knocking on Heavens door, starting at the early age of five years old, having to survive my first automobile accident. At sixteen, I drowned but was miraculously saved. Four years later I was in Vietnam, then had two major automobile accidents one before I was there in the WTC on the 93 bombing, then another before I was there on 9/11. After ten months at Ground Zero, I ended up with nineteen health ailments, one being bladder cancer. This will probably have you feel like youve been pushed back into that seat youre in and have you look to see if youre safely secured, as we go about feeling the remainder of those climbs, drops, curves and hoops with me. While were still on this journey, I will tell you about some of these most amazing surprising coincidences that had occurred to me (ones that I could never imagine, happening) and all because of this sudden change in me, that came about, hours later on September 11, 2001. Why, and more than, anything why me?

Book excerpt: Going Home is a story of lost and found, a story of a family torn apart by the depression and poverty of the 1930s. It tells of their struggle to survive and find a place in a new world of dust and despair. This family travels a lifetime to find the home they once knew. In the end death brings them together once more and points them to the road that was always there all along. This is a story the author knows well because he was one of that lost generation. (Authors note) I thought of many titles for this novel before I decided on Going Home. I believe that sometime in our lives we have all wished that we could go home to a simple, uncomplicated, warm and loving place we once knew or always hoped to find. I believe that the two words in this title are both a hope and a prayer; it speaks of a universal desire that lives in all of us. Thomas Wolfe looked into his half full glass and remarked, You cant go home again, but even if this is true, hope still lives. No matter where we go in the world we all long to see home again. Truly, in our hearts we are always going home.

In order to retain physical custody, he had to defy the court order, resulting in a clandestine cross-country move to Southern California in contempt of that court. The flight, and its resulting aftermath, make up the time line of that odyssey, even further endearing the father to his son, as well as eventually to the son's own family, including three children that later came along.

Book excerpt: The definitive account of one of American history’s most repellent and most fascinating moments, combining investigative journalism and sweeping social history "Brilliane.... Years later, the tale of murder and revenge in Georgia still has the power to fascinate...Intense, suspenseful.” —The Washington Post Book World In 1913, 13-year-old Mary Phagan was found brutally murdered in the basement of the Atlanta pencil factory where she worked. The factory manager, a college-educated Jew named Leo Frank, was arrested, tried, and convicted in a trial that seized national headlines. When the governor commuted his death sentence, Frank was kidnapped and lynched by a group of prominent local citizens. Steve Oney’s acclaimed account re-creates the entire story for the first time, from the police investigations to the gripping trial to the brutal lynching and its aftermath. Oney vividly renders Atlanta, a city enjoying newfound prosperity a half-century after the Civil War, but still rife with barely hidden prejudices and resentments. He introduces a Dickensian pageant of characters, including zealous policemen, intrepid reporters, Frank’s martyred wife, and a fiery populist who manipulated local anger at Northern newspapers that pushed for Frank’s exoneration.

Book excerpt: The perfect gift for baseball fans, now with a new epilogue by author R.A. Dickey, winner of the 2012 Cy Young award. "An astounding memoir—haunting and touching, courageous and wise."—Jeremy Schaap, bestselling author, Emmy award-winning journalist, ESPN In 1996, R.A. Dickey was the Texas Rangers’ much-heralded No. 1 draft choice. Then, a routine physical revealed that his right elbow was missing its ulnar collateral ligament, and his lifelong dream—along with his $810,000 signing bonus—was ripped away. Yet, despite twice being consigned to baseball’s scrap heap, Dickey battled back. Sustained by his Christian faith, the love of his wife and children, and a relentless quest for self-awareness, Dickey is now the starting pitcher for the Toronoto Blue Jays (he was previously a star pitcher for the New York Mets) and one of the National League’s premier players, as well as the winner of the 2012 Cy Young award. In Wherever I Wind Up, Dickey eloquently shares his quintessentially American tale of overcoming extraordinary odds to achieve a game, a career, and a life unlike any other.
