These results of these efforts were directly applied to the development of production decline type curves applicable to a dual fracture-matrix flow system. Analysis of production records obtained from Austin Chalk operators illustrated the utility of these type curves to determine relative fracture/matrix contributions and extent. Well-log response in Austin Chalk wells has been shown to be a reliable indicator of organic maturity. (VSP) Vertical-Seismic Profile data was used to use shear-wave splitting concepts to estimate fracture orientations. Several programs were to be written to facilitate analysis of the data. The results of these efforts indicated fractures could be detected with VSP seismic methods. Development of the (EOR) Enhanced Oil Recovery Imbibition Process -- Laboratory displacement as well as MRI and CT imaging studies have shown the carbonated water-imbibition displacement process significantly accelerates and increases recovery of an oil saturated, low permeability core material, when compared to that of a normal brine imbibition displacement process. A study of oil recovery by the application of a cyclic carbonated water imbibition process, followed by reducing the pressure below the bubble point of the CO2-water solution, indicated the possibility of alternate and new enhanced recovery method. The installation of an artificial solution gas drive significantly increased oil recovery. The extent and arrangement of micro-fractures in Austin Chalk horizontal cores was mapped with CT scanning techniques. The degree of interconnection of the micro-fractures was easily visualized.

Book excerpt: Water flooding of oil reservoirs has been performed for a century in order to improve oil recovery for two reasons: (1) give pressure support to the reservoir to prevent gas production and (2) displace the oil by viscous forces. During the last 30 years, it was discovered that the wetting properties of the reservoir played a very important role for the efficiency of the water flood. Even though much work have been published on crude oil–brine–rock (CBR) interaction related to wetting properties, Professor N.R. Morrow, University of Wyoming, asked the audience the following question at the European enhanced oil-recovery (EOR) meeting in Cambridge, April 2011: Do we understand water flooding of oil reservoirs? If we are not able to explain why injection fluids of different ionic composition can have a great impact on displacement efficiency and oil recovery, the answer to Morrow’s question is NO. Researchers have to admit that we do not know the phenomena of water flooding well enough. The key to improve our understanding is to obtain fundamental chemical understanding of the CBR interaction by controlled laboratory studies, and then propose chemical mechanisms, which should be validated also from field experience. In this chapter, I have tried to sum up our experience and chemical understanding on water-based EOR in carbonates and sandstones during the last 20 years with a specific focus on initial wetting properties and possibilities for wettability modification to optimize oil recovery. Chemically, the CBR interaction is completely different in carbonates and sandstones. The proposed chemical mechanisms for wettability modification are used to explain field observations.

Book excerpt: Waterflooding in low permeability, fractured and oil-wet carbonate reservoirs yields extremely low oil recovery due to bypassing through fractures and little imbibition into the matrix resulting in a large amount of oil remaining in the reservoir. Gravity-aided gas injection is studied at the lab-scale in this work to enhance oil recovery from fractured reservoirs. The miscibility of the gas with a model oil (decane with naphthenic acid) is varied by enriching the methane with ethane. Mobility of the gas is decreased by incorporating the gas in foam or glycerol-alternating-gas floods. As the miscibility increases, the oil recovery increases, but reaches a plateau above the near-miscible conditions. The foam flood improves oil recovery by diverting gas into the matrix, if the gas is sufficiently soluble in the oil and the gas-oil capillary pressure is sufficiently low. The pressure gradient generated in the fracture by foam helps in the diversion of the gas into the matrix. Glycerol-alternating-gas floods result in minor additional oil recovery over foam floods because the pressure gradients are about the same as those observed in foam floods. Secondary foam flooding achieves similar ultimate oil recovery values as tertiary foam flooding, but at faster rates. Simulations of gas floods show the presence of three different gas fronts during the experiments. Miscible and near-miscible foam floods increased the oil recovery to high values (about 85% OOIP) in core floods and their scale-up to field-scale warrants further study.

Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) with gas in cyclical (huff-n-puff) injection mode is arguably the most feasible method to solve the problem of relatively low oil recovery in the low permeability reservoirs, as supported by wealth of evidences. Nonetheless, the results so far seem vary widely. In some cases, the results are encouraging, while in some others, they are marginal. There seems to be many parameters to be considered in predicting the chance of a huff-n-puff gas EOR success. It is of interest not to just be able to forecast whether a huff-n-puff gas EOR will result in a satisfactory result, but also to obtain the highest oil recovery achievable, at least theoretically. With reliable real field data, rather than the synthetic one, research to identify the most significant factors affecting the gas EOR results in unconventional reservoirs by means of the widely used numerical simulation, is possible. The origin of the data should arguably give more credibility to the results, and thus their related analyses. Once the significant factors are identified and how they interact is understood, an optimum operational parameters design that maximizes the oil recovery is attainable. The acquired knowledge can also be of use in reducing the unknowns in other attempts with other methods to improve unconventional reservoirs’ oil recovery, so that the focus can be directed towards the right direction. Admittedly, uncertainties are inherent to the procedures used, but they are assumed to be acceptable for the purpose. This research found that the maximization of the oil recovery from unconventional reservoirs is viable and it is worth the resources spent. There seems to be some kind of matrix permeability threshold, below which the gas EOR will return meager even negative incremental oil recovery. This is because in order for the EOR to work well, the oil phase must be able to traverse with reasonable ease in the matrix, unless the injection gas effectively vaporizes the reservoir oil phase. Good injection gas choices are the ones that lower the oil viscosity while monotonically vaporize it in reservoir conditions. Field gas, [CO2, C2, C3, and C4] are usually good injection gas choices, with certain conditions. Single oil or gas phase in reservoir conditions is desirable, as the presence of another phase will adversely affect the phase flow, as described by the relative permeability curves concept. Good operational parameters are the ones that facilitate the production of the heavy components the most, while minimizing the obstruction to the oil influx from the matrix to the SRV. By extension, it is suggested that the use of water-based surfactant could be detrimental to the oil recovery in the long term, as the water phase will block the injection gas contact with the reservoir fluid. The inability to apply sufficiently high pressure without adversely affecting the aforementioned oil influx is a concerning challenge in the real field EOR implementation. Unless the reservoir permeability is enough to allow adequate oil phase mobility, it may be more reasonable to produce such unconventional reservoirs in primary production mode. Moreover, a higher GOR tends return a higher incremental oil recovery for black and volatile oil, in case of the EOR is applied from the beginning without a preceding primary production period. The data obtained from the oil-producing fields is also used to develop some kind of screening criteria for injection gas type, within which a huff-n-puff gas EOR will result in a good incremental oil recovery. The criteria cover the reservoir pressure, oil viscosity, C7+ molar fraction, and fracture conductivity. However, due to the available data is for reservoir oil with relatively low viscosity, the screening criteria is also more appropriate for such type of reservoir oil. As for the reservoir permeability point of view, the screening criteria is more suited for unconventional reservoirs with permeability of 685 nanodarcy or higher

Book excerpt: "Excess water production in oil fields is becoming a challenging economic and environmental problem as more reservoirs are maturing. Water channeling, one of the primary reservoir conformance problems, is caused by reservoir heterogeneities that lead to the development of high-permeability streaks. The recovery of oil from carbonate reservoirs is usually low due to their extreme heterogeneity caused by natural fractures and the nature of oil-wet matrix. Also, oil recovery from fractured sandstone reservoirs is often low due to areal heterogeneity. Gel treatments have proven to be a successful and inexpensive fluid diversion method when used to plug the thief zones and thereby improve sweep efficiency in reservoirs. However, particle gel treatment can only be used to plug fractures or high permeable channels to improve sweep efficiency and has little effect on displacement efficiency. Oil recovery is the product of displacement efficiency (ED) and sweep efficiency (ES). Particle gels can plug fractures and improve sweep efficiency, but they have little effect on displacement efficiency. Low salinity water flooding (LSWF) can only increase displacement efficiency but has little or no effect on sweep efficiency. The main objective of this research is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the combined LSWF-PPG technology and to show how the coupling method can improve oil recovery. We developed a cost-effective, novel, enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technology for fractured reservoirs by coupling the two technologies into one process.
