Book excerpt: A novel exploration of the deeper political, economic, and geopolitical history behind Germany's daring campaign to restructure its energy system around green power. Since the 1990s, Germany has embarked on a daring campaign to restructure its energy system around renewable power, sparking a global revolution in solar and wind technology. But this pioneering energy transition has been plagued with problems. In Energy and Power, Stephen G. Gross explains the deeper origins of the Energiewende--Germany's transition to green energy--and offers the first comprehensive history of German energy and climate policy from World War II to the present. The book follows the Federal Republic as it passed through five energy transitions from the dramatic shift to oil that nearly wiped out the nation's hard coal sector, to the oil shocks and the rise of the Green movement in the 1970s and 1980s, the co-creation of a natural gas infrastructure with Russia, and the transition to renewable power today. He shows how debates over energy profoundly shaped the course of German history and influenced the landmark developments that define modern Europe. As Gross argues, the intense and early politicization of energy led the Federal Republic to diverge from the United States and rethink its fossil economy well before global warming became a public issue, building a green energy system in the name of many social goals. Yet Germany's experience also illustrates the difficulty, the political battles, and the unintended consequences that surround energy transitions. By combining economy theory with a study of interest groups, ideas, and political mobilization, Energy and Power offers a novel explanation for why energy transitions happen. Further, it provides a powerful lens to move beyond conventional debates on Germany's East-West divide, or its postwar engagement with the Holocaust, to explore how this nation has shaped the contemporary world in other important ways.

Book excerpt: As the world races toward the Great Tribulation, immorality among the world's leaders, increased lawlessness, natural disasters, and anarchy many voices have flooded the blogosphere, YouTube and the social networks to interpret the times. Rev. Blair has risen above the unholy chorus to write a series of timeless articles from a biblical perspective to help Christians stand firm in their faith. This collection of short articles taken from his two popular websites give practical application, prophetic insight, and a clear voice to those in power. As prophet, social activist, and pastor, Daniel Blair writes each article with compassion and uncompromising biblical truth to prod every Christian to pick up the banner of truth and walk in holiness before the Lord. Use as a daily devotional or as a timeless resource during the coming distress. In this volume I discuss prophecy in both the Holy Scripture and that for which I have personally received through dreams, visions, and prophetic insight. As we all face uncertain days ahead it's comforting to know that God has already been there and never leaves His children totally in the dark, but imparts wisdom to those who are willing to listen.

Economies were failing, people were starving and governments felt the only way out of this dilemma was to initiate war. This is a work of fiction. It takes place sometime in the 1940s, which found the United States embroiled in two separate wars. One war was with Germany in Europe and the surrounding countries and oceans. Germany had essentially taken control of all of Europe. The second war was with Japan. This after Japan had bombed Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in the year of 1941. Germany and Japan had declared war on the United States, and the United States then declared war on both nations, with a mere few days. This story is about the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), who at this time was named the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). The Office of Strategic Services (OSS) was established by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, with the urging from one of his Colleagues from University. As result, the Colleague was named the head of an Administration, which was to later become the OSS, and with the help of the British Intelligence Agency, was able to build the organization with Agents and equipment. These Agents are sent covertly all over the world, to complete their missions on a timely basis. A special Project is created for them, which places them in precarious and lethally-dangerous positions and politics. They find themselves always calculating the odds and morality of humankind to the mission, and manage to find love and romance in the process.

Book excerpt: "Harrigan, surveying thousands of years of history that lead to the banh mi restaurants of Houston and the juke joints of Austin, remembering the forgotten as well as the famous, delivers an exhilarating blend of the base and the ignoble, a very human story indeed. [ Big Wonderful Thing is] as good a state history as has ever been written and a must-read for Texas aficionados.”—Kirkus, Starred Review The story of Texas is the story of struggle and triumph in a land of extremes. It is a story of drought and flood, invasion and war, boom and bust, and the myriad peoples who, over centuries of conflict, gave rise to a place that has helped shape the identity of the United States and the destiny of the world. “I couldn’t believe Texas was real,” the painter Georgia O’Keeffe remembered of her first encounter with the Lone Star State. It was, for her, “the same big wonderful thing that oceans and the highest mountains are.” Big Wonderful Thing invites us to walk in the footsteps of ancient as well as modern people along the path of Texas’s evolution. Blending action and atmosphere with impeccable research, New York Times best-selling author Stephen Harrigan brings to life with novelistic immediacy the generations of driven men and women who shaped Texas, including Spanish explorers, American filibusters, Comanche warriors, wildcatters, Tejano activists, and spellbinding artists—all of them taking their part in the creation of a place that became not just a nation, not just a state, but an indelible idea. Written in fast-paced prose, rich with personal observation and a passionate sense of place, Big Wonderful Thing calls to mind the literary spirit of Robert Hughes writing about Australia or Shelby Foote about the Civil War. Like those volumes, it is a big book about a big subject, a book that dares to tell the whole glorious, gruesome, epically sprawling story of Texas.

Book excerpt: Relying on a rich cache of previously classified notes, transcripts, cables, policy briefs, and memoranda, Andrew Cooper explains how oil drove, even corrupted, American foreign policy during a time when Cold War imperatives still applied, and tells why in the 1970s the U.S. switched its Middle East allegiance from the Shah of Iran to the Saudi royal family. Amid the oil shocks of the early 1970s, there was one man the U.S. could rely on: the Shah of Iran. The Shah sold us oil; we sold him weapons. But the U.S. and other industrialized economies could not tolerate repeated annual double digit increases in oil prices. During the 1976 election campaign, President Gerald Ford decided that he had to find a country that would break the OPEC monopoly and sell the U.S. oil more cheaply. On the advice of Treasury Secretary William Simon -- and against the advice of Secretary of State Henry Kissinger -- Ford made a deal to sell advanced weaponry to the Saudis in exchange for a more moderate price hike in oil. The Shah's economy was destabilized, and disaffected elements mobilized to overthrow him. The U.S. had embarked on a long relationship with the autocratic Saudi kingdom that continues to this day.
