Book excerpt: This is the first collection of records the researcher should turn to in any genealogical investigation in the Buckeye State. Taking the place of pre-1820 census records, this work presents a county-by-county list of Ohio settlers and residents from about 1800 to 1825. Along with the 1801 tax list of the Virginia Military District, it contains the names of taxpayers listed in various county tax rolls, and it also contains lists of original proprietors and settlers (taken from other sources), names of holders of military warrants, voters' lists, householders' lists, occasional lists of Revolutionary soldiers, and lists of resident proprietors. The work is arranged by county, with multiple tax lists arranged chronologically thereunder. There is at least one tax list given for each of the seventy-five counties covered, the combined lists naming about 50,000 taxpayers. Each county tax list is accompanied by a brief history of the county's formation. Researchers should note that tax lists were not available for the following counties: Auglaize, Carroll, Erie, Fulton, Lake, Lucas, Noble, Ottawa, Paulding, Summit, Vinton, and Wyandot. Our reprint combines the original 1971 publication and the 1973 index, both first published by the Ohio Genealogical Society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third edition of Wills, Probate and Estates has been written to provide trainee solicitors with a clear and thorough understanding of current best practice in the area of wills, trusts, probate and the administration of estates. The manual takes into account recent changes in legislation, particularly the Land and Conveyancing Law Reform Act, 2009, the Civil Partnership and Certain Rights and Obligations of Cohabitants Act, 2010 and certain relevant changes to the Capital Acquisitions Tax Consolidation Act, 2003. The book outlines the basic elements of a will, familiarizing trainees with the common law and statutory background enabling them to draft wills and simple trusts in accordance with statute and their clients' informed instructions. The manual goes on to deal with obtaining the necessary grant of representation on the death of a client, either with or without a will, and administering such an estate. Wills, Probate and Estates provides succinct and practical advice, provided by solicitors for solicitors, tackling questions of practice and procedure that are of central importance not only for students on the Professional Practice Course, but also to practitioners who deal with any area of wills, trusts, probate or the administration of estates.

Book excerpt: “The Widows kept me on the edge of my seat. Montgomery is a masterful storyteller.” —Lee Martin, author of Pulitzer Prize-Finalist The Bright Forever Inspired by the true story of Ohio’s first female sheriff, Jess Montgomery’s powerful, lyrical debut is the story of two women who take on murder and corruption at the heart of their community. Kinship, Ohio, 1924: When Lily Ross learns that her husband, Daniel, the town’s widely respected sheriff, has been killed while transporting a prisoner in an apparent accident, she vows to seek the truth about his death. Hours after his funeral, a stranger appears at her door. Marvena Whitcomb, a coal miner’s widow, is unaware that Daniel has died and begs to speak with him about her missing daughter. From miles away but worlds apart, Lily’s and Marvena’s lives collide as they realize that Daniel was perhaps not the man that either of them believed him to be. *BONUS CONTENT: This edition of The Widows includes a new introduction from the author and a discussion guide "The Widows is a gripping, beautifully written novel about two women avenging the murder of the man they both loved."—Hallie Ephron, New York Times bestselling author of You'll Never Know, Dear "Jess Montgomery's gorgeous writing can be just as dark and terrifying as a subterranean cave when the candle is snuffed out, but her prose can just as easily lead you to the surface for a gasp of air and a glimpse of blinding, beautiful sunlight. This is a powerful novel: a tale of loss, greed, and violence, and the story of two powerful women who refuse to stand down."—Wiley Cash, New York Times bestselling author of The Last Ballad, A Land More Kind than Home, and This Dark Road to Mercy "[A] flinty, heartfelt mystery that sings of hawks and history, of coal mines and the urgent fight for social justice."—Julia Keller, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Bone on Bone

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In comparison to such regions as the South, the far West, and New England, the Midwest and its culture have been neglected both by scholars and by the popular press. Historians as well as literary and art critics tend not to examine the Midwest in depth in their academic work. And in the popular imagination, the Midwest has never really ascended to the level of the proud, literary South; the cultured, democratic Northeast; or the hip, innovative West Coast. Finding a New Midwestern History revives and identifies anew the Midwest as a field of study by promoting a diversity of viewpoints and lending legitimacy to a more in-depth, rigorous scholarly assessment of a large region of the United States that has largely been overlooked by scholars. The essays discuss facets of midwestern life worth examining more deeply, including history, religion, geography, art, race, culture, and politics, and are written by well-known scholars in the field such as Michael Allen, Jon Butler, and Nicole Etcheson.

They cover original and restored Declarations of Intention to Naturalize and the subsequent naturalization papers for over 25,000 people, whose papers are on file at the Hamilton County, Ohio, courthouse for the years 1837 to 1916. Many of the records originated in other counties and other states. The abstracts include the name and age of the applicant, country of origin, departure port and date, arrival port and date, declaration date, and naturalization date, provided that data was available in the files. Copies of the original records can be obtained from the Archives for a small fee. This work presents a substantial source for identifying immigrants who settled in Ohio (at least long enough to get naturalized).
