Book excerpt: The New York Times best-selling book exploring the counterproductive reactions white people have when their assumptions about race are challenged, and how these reactions maintain racial inequality. In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to ‘bad people’ (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves that white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt, and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent any meaningful cross-racial dialogue. In this in-depth exploration, DiAngelo examines how white fragility develops, how it protects racial inequality, and what we can do to engage more constructively.

Book excerpt: In English it is possible to suggest subtle changes in meaning by altering the tone of your voice. However in Chinese this is not an option, because altering the tone of your voice could completely change the meaning of the word. To achieve the same affect, the Chinese use Modal Particles. Modal Particles frequently appear in written Chinese and especially in "on line" Blogs or e mails and can be confusing to the foreign students, because they are rarely mentioned in text books. This study will fully explain their use, and including judicially chosen Modal Particles will enable the students' work to sound more idiomatic.

Book excerpt: When music makes the laws of physics malfunction, then history is at the mercy of. THE OCTAVE DISPLACEMENT Mike Chessel is a musical genius who has discovered the Cosmic Notes, a musical composition whose notes vibrate sympathetically with microscopic structures called "strings," opening up a passage to Antiearth, Earth's cosmic twin. Now humans from forty-two thousand years into the future want those Cosmic Notes. They know the Notes can be used to detonate a weapon far more terrible than ever conceived. To make matters worse, Mike Chessel had played one wrong note making the trip to Antiearth. The physical world around him is now beginning to twist and warp. Anything could happen. Anything. THE OCTAVE DISPLACEMENT reaches beyond the fringes of imagination in a tale interweaving suspense, science fiction, humor, romance, mystery.and a chilling surprise ending. "The Octave Displacement is a highly imaginative work that merges the worlds of science and music so cleverly that one wrong note can mean the difference between life and death." -Vaughn Fritts, published poet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have experienced two of the most profound experiences God offers us on this earth: the overwhelming joy of adopting children, and the overpowering grief of losing a child from the tragedy of heroin addiction. In this book, I have placed everything my heart holds. It is a blend of happy experiences with my children as my husband and I raised them, horrific experiences as we helplessly watched one child's life painfully ripped apart in a storm of evil, and the unimaginable aftermath of losing a child. Tears from all these are spread throughout these pages. In his death, my child was redeemed and set free. I was left picking up the pieces of my broken heart, shaking my head, and trying to understand why. God's overpowering love and sovereignty had raised a sword against one of Satan's greatest tools, the power of addiction. Was my child nothing more than a casualty of spiritual warfare? God is good. Did I still believe that? This book chronicles my journey through His Word, listening for whispers from heaven, until finally, I too am set free. Today,Tonight,Tomorrow was written by Him,for Him,and belongs to Him. I pray that this book will help fight the spread of the addiction plague that has been so carefully orchestrated by the enemy and will help provide comfort to those already caught in the battle.

Book excerpt: The primary characters of this novel: the vicar, churchwarden, and Thomson, took life within my wonderings on the death of my bishop, and do not represent any persons, living or dead, that I have known in my life. Some of the other characters in the novel do reflect specific people (though never from confession, of course), and I offer their words, experiences and wisdom as a tribute to them and to the integrity and struggles of their own journey. This novel makes use of fiction to investigate questions raised by males - young, middle-aged and older - as they undergo the difficult, lifelong metamorphosis into manhood, engaging one primary issue as a paradigm for the many, unique - and deeply personal - issues which confront each man along his journey.

If the reader takes even a few of these lessons and applies them to their own life, then the time spent reading this book will be more than worth it. In all, Daniels has 105 lessons. All the lessons keep bringing the reader back to the biggest lesson of all; "The Choices We Make, Dictate The Life We Lead." Serious, funny, sad, and extremely real, this life story will keep you entertained as you learn what choices are all about.

Book excerpt: “Good sarcastic banter, discussions of top comedians and enough food descriptions to make me salivate.”—USA Today Two down-on-their-luck comedians embark on a road tour and find more than a few good laughs on the way. Olivia Vincent dreams of stand-up comedy stardom. Bustling around a busy Manhattan office by day and hustling from club to club by night, she can’t catch a break. Work is falling through the cracks, and after ditching a major client to make a performance, Olivia gets the boot. Determined to pursue her dreams, she snags an audition in Los Angeles for a coveted spot on late-night TV. But the only way to get there is to join seasoned stand-up Nick Leto on a cross-country road tour. She agrees on one condition—no funny business. Icky comedy condos, tiny smoking nightclubs, and Nick’s incessant classic rock radio are a far cry from life on the Upper East Side. Reality sets in, and Olivia wonders if she can hack it in showbiz or if she’s just a hack. As Nick helps Olivia improve her act along the way, sparks begin to fly and ignite what they thought was an impossible flame. Maybe being stuck with Nick in a Jeep isn’t so bad. As long as it doesn’t get in the way of Olivia’s actual funny business.

Book excerpt: A serious artist and a literary clown nonpareil, Max Jacob was born in Brittany in 1876 and died in a Nazi prison camp in 1944. His influence on modern French poetry was profound, and his modernist lyrical verse is still widely read. Much of hisøother work is equally exciting and original, but has waited decades for capable translators. Hesitant Fire makes available for the first time in English some of his best prose. The translators, Moishe Black and Maria Green, have succeeded in catching his gift for linguistic innovation, for mimicry and buffoonery often a millimeter away from melancholy. This anthology displays Jacob?s versatility, for he wrote in a dozen styles. The Story of King Kabul the First and Gawain the Kitchen-Boy is a fable populated by Balibridgians and Bouloulabassians. Excerpts from In Defense of Tartufe reveal the poet?s mysticism and aestheticism. Those from The Flowering Plant offer brilliant social analysis behind a mask of the Absurd. Flim-Flam studies such characters as ?The Lawyer Who Meant to Have Two Wives Instead of One? and ?The Unmarried Teacher at the High School in Cherbourg.? The Dullard Prince blends autobiography and fiction. Letters to Mrs. Goldencalf and other imaginary members of the bourgeoisie are taken from The Dark Room. Never before published, ?The Maid? was inspired by a contemporary murder case. Also included here are portions of The Bouchaballe Property, Jacob?s favorite of his own novels; entries from A Traveler?s Notebook; personal letters; and four religious meditations. For many English-language readers, Hesitant Fire will be in introduction to a writer who was an immediate precursor of Surrealism, who was a close friend of Picasso and Apollinaire, who converted to Catholicism but retained an intensely Jewish outlook, and who produced work that is still vivid nearly a half-century after his death.

Book excerpt: The story is about Inez, a Hungarian girl who takes on a job as an au pair in London right after finishing college. She finds an advert in a newspaper and meets with the mother, who lives with her French husband and two boys (eight and five) in London. The girls journey begins in the south of France. She suddenly finds herself in the French Riviera in a beautiful house, with two boys whom she will have to take care of. They spend the summer holiday in France getting to know each other and the extended family. In September, the family moves back to Chiswick, London. Everybody starts to go after their duties, and Inezs daily routine takes shape too. It isnt exactly what she was looking for, and she doesnt really get along with the mother, but at least she finds friends at the English school. The mother gets pregnant, and then it turns out that the whole family has to pack up and move to Colorado. The transition period turns out to be horrific. The situation gets a little out of hand, especially after the new baby arrives. Inezs year of duty ends in the summer after one last job she has to do for the family: accompany the boys as they fly back to Budapest.
