Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln It was near the present town of Gentryville, in what was then Perry County, but is now Spencer County, that Mr. Lincoln and his son and a neighbour at once set tp work to build a new log-cabin. It had two rooms, one downstairs, and a small attic or loft above. Sarah and her parents slept below, in what was the living room of the family; and Abraham slept in the loft, on the rough logs that made the oor. A bear-skin was spread for him to lie upon, and a blanket covered him. The bedstead of his father and mother was made of slabs nailed together against the side of the cabin, and their bed was a heap of dried leaves thrown upon the slabs. A rough table and three stools formed the rest of the furniture. There was always a good fire burning in the cabin, and when it was very cold, all the family slept around it; while skins were nailed over the doors to keep out the biting winds. Winter was upon them, but Spring would follow; and Thomas Lincoln and his son began the hard work of clearing the forest, and preparing the land to receive the seed which they would put into it. Abraham, of course, helped him; and he proved the truth of the saying, It is good for a 'man that he bear the yoke in his youth. He grew strong and hardy, self-denying and brave. He was very industrious; and when his day's work upon the forest or the farm was finished, he was free to spend some happy hours with his friends, and in the way he liked best. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: And the Abolition of Slavery in the United States It is of course impossible to give within the limits of a small book all the details of a busy life, and also the history of the American Emancipation and its causes but I trust that I have omitted little of much' importance. The books to which I have been chiefly indebted, and from which I have borrowed most freely, are the lives of Lincoln by W. H. Lamon, and by my personal friends H. J. Raymond and Dr. Holland and also the works referring to the war by I. N. Arnold, F. B. Carpenter, L. P. Brockett, A. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln Was Here, for Another Go at Douglas So the rumble of oratory that echoed over the prairies of Illinois in the late summer of 1858 presaged the coming of the storm of sorrow and sadness, of broken homes, of a nation torn by internal strife and filled only with agony and with anguish. But as a just and merciful God sends the calm after the storm, to heal the wounds it has left so the storm over the prairies came to an end in the chill days of the fall of '58 and so the same merciful and forebearing Providence spared the nation from destruction so that mankind could again pick up its burden of free government not only in our own land but in all others for all time to come. In 1 863 he was honored by being selected as one of a Company of one hundred men, to be known as the Lincoln Body guard, with headquarters near the White House in Washington. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forerunners of Lincoln in the Ohio Valley Robert Ellis Thompson relates with a touch of humor, in his History of the Presbyterian Church in the United States, how Dr. Beman, Moderator of the New School Assembly in 1838, had on one occasion (after the adjournment of an Assembly stirring and historic in these heated discussions) visited President Jackson to condole with him over his political troubles. Old Hickory looked at the Doctor with a gleam of grim humor in his eye, and said: Now, to tell you the truth, Dr. Beman, these fellows don't worry me half so much as do the dissentions in the Presbyterian Church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Last Year of President Lincoln's Life On the morning of the second of February, 1865, between nine and ten o'clock, as I was ascending the stairs to the second story, to reach my room, I met Forbes, an intelligent servant, descending with a small valise in his hand, and I asked, Where are you going? Look ing up to see that no one was near, he whispered, Fortress Monroe, and hurried on. When I reached the upper hall I met the president with his overcoat, and going to my room looked out of the window and saw him quietly walking around the curved pavement which leads to Pennsylvania Avenue, while Forbes was following at a dis tance of two or three hundred feet, as his valet. Waiting for some time I then crossed the hall to the room of the principal secretary, Mr. John G. N icolay, and quietly said, The president has left the city What do you mean? He asked; and I replied, Just what I have said. Rising quickly, he opened the door which communi cated with the president's room, and was astonished to find the chair of Mr. Lincoln vacant. The president had received a dispatch which convinced him that it was proper to go to Fortress Monroe and confer with the rebel commissioners, Alexander Stephens, R. M. T. Hunterand J. A. Campbell, and at nine o'clock that morning sent the follow ing telegram to Secretary Seward, already there: Induced by a dis patch from Gen. Grant, I join you at Fortress Monroe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln and Mary Owen: Three Letters, Lincoln to Mrs. O. H. Browning, Arnold to O. H. Browning to Arnold Shortly after this, without coming to any positive under standing with her, I set out for Vandalia, when and where you first saw me. During my stay there I had letters from her which did not change my opinion of either her intellect or in tention, but on the contrary confirmed it in both. All this while, although I was fixed, firm as the surge repelling rock, in my resolution, I found I was continually re penting the rashness which had led me to make it. Through life, I have been in no bondage, either real or imaginary, from the thralldom of which I so much desired to be free. After myreturn home, I saw nothing to change my opinion of her in any particular. She was the same, and so Was I. I now spent my time in planning how I might get along through life after my contemplated change of circumstances should have taken place, and how I might procrastinate the evil day for a time, which I really dreaded as much, perhaps more, than an Irishman does the halter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln and Twenty Other Poems Lincoln The Brief for world democracy Is Lincoln. It was not accident of birth That made him great. Born within the palace of a king, He would have cast the royal purple off To clothe a shivering hind; Or hearing hunger's cry, Have plucked the jewels From an ancient crown To save the starving child. He was at home alike In palace-hut of uncrowned peasant kings And cabin-mansion of the presidents. For it was man he loved - The prince no less than pauper - The slave that treads the mill of toil As much as him who feeds upon the grist. And why make much of Lincoln's poverty? Like Christ this man had bread to eat We know not of; And treasures stored where moths can not corrupt Nor ever thieves break through and steal. He was not poor, but rich Beyond all reckoning - Inheritor of human love, The heir of Him who taught the world The priceless wage of sacrifice - The gift of spending self In human benefactions. What matter that he went to school By pineknot or electric glare? The light that never was on land or sea Was his. The page of knowledge that alone Could satisfy his soul Was taken from the book Of human deeds, About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
