Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, and Siegfried. Parsifal. Tristan und Isolde. Both revered and reviled, Richard Wagner conceived some of the nineteenth century’s most influential operas—and created some of the most indelible characters ever to grace the stage. But over the course of his polarizing career, Wagner also composed volumes of essays and pamphlets, some on topics seemingly quite distant from the opera house. His influential concept of Gesamtkunstwerk—the “total work of art”—famously and controversially offered a way to unify the different media of an opera into a coherent whole. Less well known, however, are Wagner’s strange theories on sexuality—like his ideas about erotic acoustics and the metaphysics of sexual difference. Drawing on the discourses of psychoanalysis, evolutionary biology, and other emerging fields of study that informed Wagner’s thinking, Adrian Daub traces the dual influence of Gesamtkunstwerk and eroticism from their classic expressions in Tristan und Isolde into the work of the generation of composers that followed, including Zemlinsky, d’Albert, Schreker, and Strauss. For decades after Wagner’s death, Daub writes, these composers continued to grapple with his ideas and with his overwhelming legacy, trying in vain to write their way out from Tristan’s shadow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Glyndebourne to the King’s Head, in the flesh and streamed online: opera is reaching a broader audience than ever before. With over 400 years of history, and a beguiling mix of musical motifs, costumes, storytelling and song, opera has fascinated and enthralled audiences for centuries. However it can also cast the impression of an intimidating high-art form, inaccessible to the uninitiated. How to Enjoy Opera is an engaging, illuminating primer which will demystify the world of opera. John Snelson, who has worked at London’s world-famous Royal Opera House in Covent Garden for over 15 years, gives his expert insight into how to absorb an opera and understand its inner workings. Aimed at newcomers to the art form as well as long-time fans, this book will help the reader to absorb and understand any opera: with examples drawn from more than 45 composers and just over 100 operas included. There are references to some of the most famous of all opera moments, sometimes from less familiar perspectives, but also to lesser-known works. This book decodes many of the elements that opera composers and librettists put into their operas that give enjoyment to audiences, in the hope that readers can gain greater enjoyment from their future viewing and listening too.

Book excerpt: "Robert Cormier's brilliant novel The Chocolate War is a compelling coming-of-age story about young people in conflict at a New England prep school. The richly drawn characterizations and crackling dialogue keep the intriguing action moving from beginning to end. As dramatized by Joseph Robinette, all the elements of the book are brought vividly to life--the humor, drama, despair and hope ultimately lead to an ending that is as satisfying as it is surprising. Though a number of the roles are students at the prep school (male), an ensemble of 5 to 10 actors who voice the inner thoughts of the characters and comment on the proceedings throughout may be played by male or female or any combination thereof, thus making for a well-balanced cast, if desired."--Publisher's website

Book excerpt: Betraying the most powerful man in New York wasn't something I ever envisioned when I first started playing games with Winston Constantine. But he's engaged in far more dangerous games than ours, and his enemies are out for blood. Winston has my heart, the Morellis have incriminating photos, and I'm left with nothing except three evil stepbrothers and a future in doubt. I knew Winston wouldn't be my prince charming, but that didn't stop me from falling for him. After all, the slippers fit, and I let myself believe I'd be dancing with Winston forever. Until too much truth comes to light. Until I realize instead of ruling the board, I was just a pawn. In the end, I have only one question. When his game with me is over, will I be able to pretend as if the glass slipper wasn't a perfect fit?
