Book excerpt: This edited volume while focusing on participatory governance in the Great Lakes basin of North America also gives a comparative perspective of the African Great Lakes. The book describes the actions taken at degraded locations along the Great Lakes in North America through Remedial Action Plans (RAP) and other mechanisms, with an aim to highlight the successes and failures encountered in ecosystembased regenerative approaches. The book documents these experiences including the lead taken by industry in improving environmental quality of the Great Lakes. The book concludes with lessons learnt about revitalizing the ecosystem integrity of the lakes, which can be replicated in other watersheds of the world.

Book Synopsis Cottage Country in Transition by : Greg Halseth
Download or read book Cottage Country in Transition written by Greg Halseth and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1998-09-30 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the Rideau Lakes region of eastern Ontario and the Cultus Lake area of southwestern British Columbia as case studies, Greg Halseth examines the ways in which economic, political, and social power affect community change. He focuses on specific issues, such as residential change, land use planning, property taxation, and social organization. Moving beyond empirical research, Halseth sets the changes occurring in these communities within a broader intellectual context of "community power" and "commodification of the rural idyll." He pays particular attention to how general processes and pressures work themselves out in particular places. Written in an accessible style, Cottage Country in Transition will be of great interest to rural geographers, planners, sociologists, and community researchers as well as to rural residents and cottage owners.
Book Synopsis Federal Property Policy in Canadian Municipalities by : Michael C. Ircha
Download or read book Federal Property Policy in Canadian Municipalities written by Michael C. Ircha and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2013-06-01 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Federal property issues - especially those involving divestiture - create political disputes at all levels of government. Federal Property Policy in Canadian Municipalities analyzes the emergence of many of these issues involving military bases, airports, and other facilities in communities across Canada. With careful analysis the contributors show the underlying patterns and causes of these conflicts and their resolutions while emphasizing intergovernmental relations and the social forces that are active in property issues. Contributors examine general federal policy as well as issues pertinent to British Columbia, the Toronto waterfront, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador. The unprecedented number of cases discussed in these essays provides general conclusions and recommendations for a new orientation that will take local interests and preferences into account from the outset of decision-making. Public property is an understudied field of public policy, particularly as it concerns municipal government. Federal Property Policy in Canadian Municipalities presents a comprehensive treatment of federal property, changes in policy, and the effects these changes have on various levels of government. Contributors include Jeff Braun-Jackson (Memorial University of Newfoundland), Pierre Filion (University of Waterloo), Michael C. Ircha (University of New Brunswick), Leonard Wade Locke (Memorial University of Newfoundland), Robert MacKinnon (University of New Brunswick in Saint John), Kurt Peacock (University of New Brunswick in Saint John), Christopher Sanderson (Government of Manitoba), Tracy Summerville (University of Northern British Columbia), Stephen Tomblin (Memorial University of Newfoundland), Gary N. Wilson (University of Northern British Columbia), John Young (University of Northern British Columbia), and Robert A. Young (University of Western Ontario).

Download or read book Toronto written by Edward Relph and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-08-22 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extending a hundred miles across south-central Ontario, Toronto is the fifth largest metropolitan area in North America, with the highest population density and the busiest expressway. At its core old Toronto consists of walkable neighborhoods and a financial district deeply connected to the global economy. Newer parts of the region have downtown centers linked by networks of arterial roads and expressways, employment districts with most of the region's jobs, and ethnically diverse suburbs where English is a minority language. About half the population is foreign-born—the highest proportion in the developed world. Population growth because of immigration—almost three million in thirty years—shows few signs of abating, but recently implemented regional strategies aim to contain future urban expansion within a greenbelt and to accommodate growth by increasing densities in designated urban centers served by public transit. Toronto: Transformations in a City and Its Region traces the city's development from a British colonial outpost established in 1793 to the multicultural, polycentric metropolitan region of today. Though the original grid survey and much of the streetcar city created a century ago have endured, they have been supplemented by remarkable changes over the past fifty years in the context of economic and social globalization. Geographer Edward Relph's broad-stroke portrait of the urban region draws on the ideas of two renowned Torontonians—Jane Jacobs and Marshall McLuhan—to provide an interpretation of how its current forms and landscapes came to be as they are, the values they embody, and how they may change once again.

Book Synopsis Canada in Cities by : Katherine A.H. Graham
Download or read book Canada in Cities written by Katherine A.H. Graham and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The federal government and its policies transform Canadian cities in myriad ways. Canada in Cities examines this relationship to better understand the interplay among changing demographics, how local governments and citizens frame their arguments for federal action, and the ways in which the national government uses its power and resources to shape urban Canada. Most studies of local governance in Canada focus on politics and policy within cities. The essays in this collection turn such analysis on its head, by examining federal programs, rather than municipal ones, and observing how they influence local policies and work with regional authorities and civil societies. Through a series of case studies - ranging from federal policy concerning Aboriginal people in cities, to the introduction of the federal gas tax transfer to municipalities, to the impact of Canada's emergency management policies on cities - the contributors provide insights about how federal politics influence the local political arena. Analyzing federal actions in diverse policy fields, the authors uncover meaningful patterns of federal action and outcome in Canadian cities. A timely contribution, Canada in Cities offers a comprehensive study of diverse areas of municipal public policy that have emerged in Canada in recent years.
Book Synopsis Migration, Tourism and Social Sustainability by : Jaeyeon Choe
Download or read book Migration, Tourism and Social Sustainability written by Jaeyeon Choe and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-21 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distinctions between tourism and migration are increasingly blurred. Tourism often drives various forms of mobility, and an international workforce is essential to maintaining functioning tourism economies. This book explores intersections of tourism and migration, considering their relationships with and impacts on social sustainability. The chapters explore in a variety of contexts how the planning, development and governance of tourism affects the sustainability of communities, which consequently influences attitudes towards migrants and tourists. They also consider how migrant-local connections may evolve, creating opportunities for positive, symbiotic co-existence or intergroup tensions and exploitative relationships. The book paves the way for future work examining new forms and interactions between migration and tourism that contribute to social sustainability. This book will be of great value to students, academics, and researchers interested in tourism, geography, migration/diaspora studies and sociology. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Tourism Geographies.

Book Synopsis The Public Metropolis by : Frances Frisken
Download or read book The Public Metropolis written by Frances Frisken and published by Canadian Scholars’ Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Public Metropolis traces the evolution of Ontario government responses to rapid population growth and outward expansion in the Toronto city region over an eighty-year period. Frisken rigorously describes the many institutions and policies that were put in place at different times to provide services of region-wide importance and skilfully assesses the extent to which those institutions and policies managed to achieve objectives commonly identified with effective regional governance. Although the province acted sporadically and often reluctantly in the face of regional population growth and expansion, Frisken argues that its various interventions nonetheless contributed to the region's most noteworthy achievement: a core city that continued to thrive while many other North American cities were experiencing population, economic, and social decline. This perceptive and comprehensive examination of issues related to the evolution of city regions is critical reading not only for those teaching and researching in the field, but also for city and regional planners, officials at all levels of government, and urban historians. The research, writing, and publication of this book has been supported by the Neptis Foundation.
