Book Synopsis Settlers of the American West by : Mary Ellen Snodgrass
Download or read book Settlers of the American West written by Mary Ellen Snodgrass and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Depictions of the American west in literature, art and film perpetuate romantic stereotypes of the pioneers--the gold-crazed '49er, the intrepid sodbuster. While ennobling the woodsman, the farmwife and the lawman, this tunnel vision of American history has shortchanged the whaler, the assayer, the innkeeper and the inventor. The westward advance of the trailblazers created demand for a gamut of unsung adventurers--surveyors, financiers, politicians, surgeons, entertainers, grocers and midwives--who built communities and businesses in the wilderness amid clashes with Indians, epidemics, floods, droughts and outlawry. Chronicling the worthy deeds, ethnicities, languages and lifestyles of ordinary people who survived a stirring period in American history, this book provides biographical information for hundreds of individual pioneers on the North American frontier, from the Mississippi River Valley as far west as Alaska. Appendices list pioneers by state or country of departure, destination, ethnicity, religion and occupation. A chronology of pioneer achievements places them in perspective.

Book Synopsis Left Without a Future? by : Anthony Painter
Download or read book Left Without a Future? written by Anthony Painter and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-11 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The roots of the recent financial crisis can be found in the substantial changes which have affected British economy and society over the last three decades. In economic terms, the UK has transformed from a predominantly industrial nation to one led by services and creative industries, while society has also become less industrial with new class 'networks' emerging. Post-war social democracy in its original form- as as advocated by Tony Crosland- relied heavily on an industrial economy and society. A central statist, ideal oriented version of social democracy can only go so far in the post-crash economy and society, hence the ease with which many of New Labour's reforms and resource allocation have since been reversed by the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition. The centre-left has always been at its strongest when building new long-term institutions such as the NHS, expanding higher education and establishing the national minimum wage. Anthony Painter here argues that this institution-building tradition is the one to which the left should return. He advocates new economic, social and cultural policies which provide a manifesto for the future development of social democracy- and centre-left institutions-in Britain.
