Book Synopsis The Persistence of Memory by : Jessica Moody
Download or read book The Persistence of Memory written by Jessica Moody and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Persistence of Memory is a history of the public memory of transatlantic slavery in the largest slave-trading port city in Europe, from the end of the 18th century into the 21st century; from history to memory. Mapping this public memory over more than two centuries reveals the ways in which dissonant pasts, rather than being 'forgotten histories', persist over time as a contested public debate. This public memory, intimately intertwined with constructions of 'place' and 'identity', has been shaped by legacies of transatlantic slavery itself, as well as other events, contexts and phenomena along its trajectory, revealing the ways in which current narratives and debate around difficult histories have histories of their own. By the 21st century, Liverpool, once the 'slaving capital of the world', had more permanent and long-lasting memory work relating to transatlantic slavery than any other British city. The long history of how Liverpool, home to Britain's oldest continuous black presence, has publicly 'remembered' its own slaving past, how this has changed over time and why, is of central significance and relevance to current and ongoing efforts to face contested histories, particularly those surrounding race, slavery and empire.
Book Synopsis The Lexico-Grammatical Categories of Theme as an Index of Genre in Discourse Analysis by : Anwar El-Issa
Download or read book The Lexico-Grammatical Categories of Theme as an Index of Genre in Discourse Analysis written by Anwar El-Issa and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-06-24 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is based on systemic-functional grammar (SFG) and focuses on the concept of Theme (the element which occupies the initial position in the clause in English), which plays a special role in the textual organization of the message contained in the clause. Theme represents one of the ways by which writers construct meaningful communicative language or stretches of discourse. It signals the relationship between the thought in the speakers mind and its expression in the discourse. Therefore, it contributes to the method of development of the texts proper. The reason for choosing Theme as a tool of analysis stems from the fact that it is a fruitful approach to the understanding of texts as is shown by the fact that it has been the concern of a number of major studies. I will adopt both a qualitative and a quantitative analysis. The results of this analysis will be presented and tabulated in such a way as to underline the distinguishing features of the genre. The tools of functional grammar (Theme and Transitivity) will be applied to the data being collected. A significant, positive facet pertinent to this study lies in its pedagogical implications. The study of the structure of Theme has resulted in useful applications, and the findings drawn from the data collected will, it is hoped, have wider application; they are not meant to be merely suggestive. The findings in this book show how Theme-Rheme can have significant pedagogical values and impacts on the native and non-native learners. The learner not only has to construct his/her sentences, choosing appropriate lexis, but he/she has to make those sentences cohere into a text belonging to the genre being tackled. The findings in this book also suggest that control of the Theme-Rheme system is part of what the successful writer (native or non-native) uses to achieve such coherence. In this regard, students can be aware of a variety of linguistics choices to help them write more effectively and coherently.

Book Synopsis Britain's History and Memory of Transatlantic Slavery by : Katie Donington
Download or read book Britain's History and Memory of Transatlantic Slavery written by Katie Donington and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transatlantic slavery, just like the abolition movements, affected every space and community in Britain, from Cornwall to the Clyde, from dockyard alehouses to country estates. Today, its financial, architectural and societal legacies remain, scattered across the country in museums and memorials, philanthropic institutions and civic buildings, empty spaces and unmarked graves. Just as they did in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, British people continue to make sense of this 'national sin' by looking close to home, drawing on local histories and myths to negotiate their relationship to the distant horrors of the 'Middle Passage', and the Caribbean plantation. For the first time, this collection brings together localised case studies of Britain's history and memory of its involvement in the transatlantic slave trade, and slavery. These essays, ranging in focus from eighteenth-century Liverpool to twenty-first-century rural Cambridgeshire, from racist ideologues to Methodist preachers, examine how transatlantic slavery impacted on, and continues to impact, people and places across Britain.

Book Synopsis City of Change and Challenge by : Chris Couch
Download or read book City of Change and Challenge written by Chris Couch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. Over the last 30 years, Liverpool has undergone more economic restructuring and urban change than virtually any other city in Britain and Europe. It has also been a testing ground for almost every experiment and innovation in modern urban policy. City of Change and Challenge analyses the urban planning and regeneration experience in Liverpool over this period. In doing so, it considers the extent to which the pressure to create jobs has led to economic development aims consistently taking precedence over environmental and social concerns, and the degree to which regeneration has been dominated by centralised and top-down approaches without a strong strategic planning framework. It also discusses why some policies and programmes have been more successful than others and what lessons might be learned, not only by Liverpool's future policy makers, but also by planners, politicians and academics throughout the world.
Book Synopsis Theme as an Index of Genre in Discourse Analysis by : Anwar El-Issa
Download or read book Theme as an Index of Genre in Discourse Analysis written by Anwar El-Issa and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-02-09 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main focus of this book is on Theme-Rheme analysis. In English the Theme is realized as the initial constituent of the clause or sentence. The information that is contained within the themes of the various sentences of a passage correlates with the method of development of the passage. The meaning of Theme and its realization in English explains the general correlation of given information with the initial position in the sentence. The findings and analysis of Theme-Rheme in this book will immensely aid both researchers and students who seek to understand and unfold language structures and analyze written discourse. It also provides teachers with efficient tools to analyze their students academic writing and find ways to leverage it. This book also sheds lights on the semantic and structure of the language based on the four analytical approaches implemented in this study. The findings in this book suggest that control of the Theme-Rheme system is part of what the successful writer (native or non-native) uses to achieve such coherence. In this regard, students can be aware of a variety of linguistics choices to help them write more effectively. This book suggests that control of the Theme-Rheme system in academic writing is part of what the successful writer uses to achieve coherence. This book offers a new perspective on the way written discourse is organized and structured that is of some relevance to language teachers and applied linguists, as well as to theoretical and descriptive linguists. I have tried to offer in this book new insights into analyzing texts and investigating the thematic organization of the grammatical properties of Theme at clause level, and that, I hope, will be found sufficient reason for reading it.
Book Synopsis Children of the Second Spring by : John Furnival
Download or read book Children of the Second Spring written by John Furnival and published by Gracewing Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Father Nugent founded many Institutions for the poor and needy in his native town of Liverpool and was instrumental in the scheme to take orphaned children to the New World to find a new home. He spearheaded the campaign to 'Save the Child' from the temptations and dangers of the streets, and he provided shelter to the marginalized and despised. He worked ecumenically with his colleagues from other churches in a town that was largely Protestant, and made education and the reform of the young his special concern for over fifty years. Much of what he pioneered still bears fruit today, and his work and name are perpetuated by the Nugent Care Society he founded in 1881 - originally the Liverpool Catholic Children's Protection Society." "This book is a timely reminder of Father James Nugent's work and his significance for us today, both for the Church and for society as a whole, setting his life in the context of his era which contained the seeds of so much that has borne fruit in our time. It is an encouragement to priests, and potential priests, in the mission of the Church today."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Synopsis The Most Perfect Cruiser by : Stephen Chapin Kinnaman
Download or read book The Most Perfect Cruiser written by Stephen Chapin Kinnaman and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Most Perfect Cruiser is the story of how the Confederacy got to sea the most deadly of its raiders, the C.S.S. Alabama. It is both a complex and a human tale, one that occurred entirely outside of North America. We encounter the ambitions of the brilliant James Dunwoody Bulloch, the Confederate secret naval agent who brought Alabama into being thinking he would command her; and her resourceful captain, Raphael Semmes, whose previous success had already alarmed the North. As for the Alabama, she began her maiden voyage in the teeth of a rising gale, barely escaping the clutches of a Union warship and the belated efforts of British authorities to seize her. All of these threads culminated in a three-way rendezvous in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, where through a remarkable combination of luck, skill, and hard work, the South commissioned the most successful commerce raider the world has ever known. STEPHEN CHAPIN KINNAMAN is an offshore and marine technology professional with over thirty years of experience. He was born in 1950 and grew up in upstate New York and New Jersey. He and his wife, Maureen, currently reside in Chappell Hill, Texas. In preparation for writing The Most Perfect Cruiser, Stephen Chapin Kinnaman visited all the principal locations touched by Bulloch, Semmes, and Alabama, gaining a first-hand feel for the terrain which shaped Alabama's birth. Mr. Kinnaman was a director of the Mobile, Alabamabased C.S.S. Alabama Association, and as such was involved with aspects of the ongoing wreck recovery efforts in France. He participated in the Association's first field trip to Cherbourg during the summer of 1999. His nautical background and love of the sea has allowed him to craft a spirited account of the operational side of Alabama's creation which is so central to this book.
