Download or read book The Royal Navy Wasp written by Larry Jeram-Croft and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of the first helicopter in the world designed from the outset to be deployed at sea, in Destroyers and Frigates. It is primarily based on the words of those who operated it. Designed from the outset to cope with the restricted space of a warship both for stowage and flight operations it proved an immediate success. Its original role was to act as a weapon carrier to launch torpedoes and depth charges on submarine contacts out of range of the parent ships weapons range. Soon, it also took on a second primary role of air to surface attack using wire guided missiles. The flexibility of the machine was such that it was able to conduct a plethora of secondary roles from visual search to collecting the all-important ships mail. Wherever the Royal Navy was deployed on operations a Wasp was there. The book has accounts of operations around the world particularly during the Cold War of the Seventies and the Falklands War where amongst other things it had the honour of being the first RN platform ever, to fire a guided missile at a surface target. However the story doesnt end there. Although the aircraft went out of service in the Royal Navy in 1988, it continued to operate with other navies around the world. To this day there are still several airworthy examples flying. The second part of the book gives accounts of these machines and brings the story of the Wasp completely up to date.

Book Synopsis On a Wing and a Prayer by : Cameron Fulljames
Download or read book On a Wing and a Prayer written by Cameron Fulljames and published by Janus Publishing Company Lim. This book was released on 2005-09 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In stark, personal detail, Cameron Fulljames tells the story of his diagnosis of, fight against, and victory over cancer. Assembled from his diaries and written throughout the experience, this book documents the career he had to put on hold and the challenge he and his doctors had before them: a tumor that covered nearly one-fourth of his brain. Faced with the nightmares that accompany a brain tumor—seizures, paralysis, memory loss, deterioration, and death—Fulljames gathers his strength and chooses hope. He faces depression, despair, and overwhelming odds as he goes through treatment, and finds little in reference material to assuage his confusion and helplessness. Fulljames’ story is inspiring for cancer patients and survivors, their families, and others who believe in the power of sheer will to overcome a seemingly certain death.

Book Synopsis The SS Terra Nova (1884-1943) by : Michael C. Tarver
Download or read book The SS Terra Nova (1884-1943) written by Michael C. Tarver and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2020-08-03 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SS Terra Nova was most famous for being the vessel to carry the ill-fated 1910 polar expedition led by Robert Falcon Scott, but the story of this memorable ship, built in wood to enable flexibility in the ice, continued until 1943, when she sank off Greenland. This newly designed and updated edition presents the definitive illustrated account of one of the classic polar exploration ships of the 'heroic age'. Put together from accounts recorded by the men who sailed in her, it tells the sixty-year history of a ship built by a famous Scottish shipbuilding yard, in the nineteenth-century days of whaling and sealing before coal gas and electricity replaced animal oils.
Download or read book Fortress Malta written by James Holland and published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson. This book was released on 2013-01-31 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extraordinary drama of Malta's WWII victory against impossible odds told through the eyes of the people who were there. In March and April 1942, more explosives were dropped on the tiny Mediterranean island of Malta - smaller than the Isle of Wight - than on the whole of Britain during the first year of the Blitz. Malta had become one of the most strategically important places in the world. From there, the Allies could attack Axis supply lines to North Africa; without it, Rommel would be able to march unchecked into Egypt, Suez and the Middle East. For the Allies this would have been catastrophic. As Churchill said, Malta had to be held 'at all costs'. FORTRESS MALTA follows the story through the eyes of those who were there: young men such as twenty-year-old fighter pilot Raoul Daddo-Langlois, anti-aircraft gunner Ken Griffiths, American Art Roscoe and submariner Tubby Crawford - who served on the most successful Allied submarine of the Second World War; cabaret dancer-turned RAF plotter Christina Ratcliffe, and her lover, the brilliant and irrepressible reconnaissance pilot, Adrian Warburton. Their stories and others provide extraordinary first-hand accounts of heroism, resilience, love, and loss, highlighting one of the most remarkable stories of World War II.
Download or read book Military Wives written by Penny Legg and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For as long as there have been armed forces there have been camp followers – the families who move with the military to stay with their men. This book looks at the experiences of just a few of these families, through the eyes of the military wives and their relatives. From the First World War, when many women were fiancées but never wives, through the Second World War and postwar Britain to the present day and twenty-first-century service life, military wives talk about their experiences as never before. What is it really like to be married to a member of Britain's Armed Forces? Can you ever be prepared for the reality that awaits you when you say 'I do' and walk down the aisle? From Big Bertha's booms, rationing and bomb shelters, to military wives choirs, Afghanistan and marathons, this book celebrates that great British heroine, the military wife.
