Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There's no way I'm going to ever like Christina. Not if she's the last woman on earth. No matter how beautiful she is, no matter which way I swing. If her and I were stranded together on an island, the lasts thing I would do is look for companionship. Unless she looks at me like that... Sage and Christina are work colleagues and they're always competing. Christina is everything - beautiful, sexy, flirtatious. But Sage is comfortable with who she is as a woman, where she stands as a lesbian, and where she's headed in life. Alone. When Mr. Craig - CEO of Sharkfin Industries - asks Christina and Sage to work together on a project that will only see one of them through to the promotion they've both been vying for, the heat is on. There's no way Sage is going to let manipulative Christina flirt her way to the position she's always wanted. Until Sage and Christina run into each other outside the office, and sparks fly. In a good way. They spend a night together and suddenly the tables turn. Christina is now a lover, not an enemy. But she's still selfish and set on winning. And Sage doesn't know where she stands. In an attempt to make things work she just makes them worse. There's only one thing stronger than lust: guilt. Will Sage and Christina be able to work out their differences and make it happen despite the controversies of a conventional workplace? Will Sage's mistakes make them stronger? Or will the other shoe drop?

Book excerpt: These selections from Theodor Reik's work concern the love life and sexual activity of men and women. Reik establishes the theme of this work in the following way: "The sex urge hunts for lustful pleasure; love is in search of joy and happiness." Over a third of this volume had never been published in book form before it originally appeared half a century ago. Its appearance in paperback, for the first time, is a welcome addition to current debates, liberated from ideological and political constraints. The first part of the book is so far ahead of its time that it is still current. It reveals Reik's departure from Freud's theories and from those of most of his contemporaries in psychology and psychoanalysis. Part Two is a greatly abbreviated version of Masochism in Modern Man, retaining those parts with a direct bearing on the subject of this volume. Part Three offers two essays on why people remain single. In the author's usual direct style, they deal with the marriage shyness of the male and the psychological fears and resistance of both men and women to acceptance of the marriage bond. Part Four is Reik at his wisest. "The first lady whom I asked to read the manuscript said smilingly: 'Many of your impressions about us (women) are correct. No man should read the book!' A few seconds later, she said: 'Or rather, every man should read the book!'"As Paul Roazen noted, "in contrast to some of Freud's other followers, Reik was prescient early on in distinguishing self-love from narcissism. Reik believed that genuine self-regard was the ultimate basis for developing the capacity to love."At times Reik seems to defend women, at times to critique them. Yet he writes with sympathy and understanding. He challenges other authorities who have written on the subject, but he also agrees with many of them. Love and Lust is civilized writing at its most provocative. Reik is authoritative, and his book reflects the glow of a rich personali

Book excerpt: The Lust of Seeing is the most comprehensive work on Hernandez to date, elucidating aspects of Hernandez's life and writing that have remained untreated or undertreated by previous criticism. The book's theoretical and comparative discussions also make The Lust of Seeing relevant reading well beyond Hernandez studies, particularly for readers interested in psychoanalysis, myth and ritual, fantastic literature, women's studies, film studies, and textual theory.

Book excerpt: You will get lost in the story of romance and mystery surrounding the Beale Treasure and two missing people. Based in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, Treasure Lust captures the scenery and legends that surround the infamous treasure. Damon has to outsmart unforeseen enemies and answer unanswerable questions while courting his lifelong crush Lora. The outrageous characters and their hidden secrets come to light as investigators dig into the personal history of several influential city figures. This digging leads to murder, tragic accidents, broken relationships and romance. Treasure Lust follows in the footsteps of my other two books; MANA: A loved ones Bi-polar Mania and REDRUM: Murder in DC; by combining my experiences with fiction to create a story of adventure and mystery. My life has given me great insight into people and how they react in many circumstances. I was a police officer and detective with three police departments in Virginia. One of my daughters was a police detective and my son is now a police officer. I served in the U. S. Army from 1963 to 1966 during the Vietnam Conflict. As a Vietnam veteran, I have experienced human behavior at its worst and its best. As a police officer I have an inside knowledge of the working of not only the police department, but also the criminal mind.

Book Synopsis Abandoned to Lust by : Jennifer Wright Knust

Download or read book Abandoned to Lust written by Jennifer Wright Knust and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early Christians used charges of adultery, incest, and lascivious behavior to demonize their opponents, police insiders, resist pagan rulers, and define what it meant to be a Christian. Christians frequently claimed that they, and they alone were sexually virtuous, comparing themselves to those marked as outsiders, especially non-believers and "heretics," who were said to be controlled by lust and unable to rein in their carnal desires. True or not, these charges allowed Christians to present themselves as different from and morally superior to those around them. Through careful, innovative readings, Jennifer Knust explores the writings of Paul, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus of Lyons, and other early Christian authors who argued that Christ alone made self-mastery possible. Rejection of Christ led to both immoral sexual behavior and, ultimately, alienation and punishment from God. Knust considers how Christian writers participated in a long tradition of rhetorical invective, a rhetoric that was often employed to defend status and difference. Christians borrowed, deployed, and reconfigured classical rhetorical techniques, turning them against their rulers to undercut their moral and political authority. Knust also examines the use of accusations of licentiousness in conflicts between rival groups of Christians. Portraying rival sects as depraved allowed accusers to claim their own group as representative of "true Christianity." Knust's book also reveals the ways in which sexual slurs and their use in early Christian writings reflected cultural and gendered assumptions about what constituted purity, morality, and truth. In doing so, Abandoned to Lust highlights the complex interrelationships between sex, gender, and sexuality within the classical, biblical, and early-Christian traditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual harassment is overwhelmingly a problem of women workers. It has nothing to do with normal interaction between the sexes: it denotes scorn of another person, and is used to establish or prove power over others. Sexual harassment produces feelings of revulsion, violation, disgust, anger and powerlessness. Good managers know that it is in the long-term interest of the enterprise to ensure that their employees are treated with respect. While effective legal remedies are necessary, it is also important to ensure that the problem ceases, or better still, never starts. Thus, preventive measures are especially important. This issue of the Conditions of Work Digest is essential reading for employers, personnel managers, trade unionists and all those in governmental and non-governmental circles who are committed to justice and dignity at work.

Book excerpt: The disappearance of a child is a nightmare scenario. For the Farraday family, it is only a start of the true nightmare to come. When their little girl vanishes, they struggle to cope. When unexplained deaths begin to plague the family, questions begin to arise in their community. What might cause so much tragedy in one family? Is it perverse coincidence-or something far more sinister at work? When another little girl disappears and her mother is murdered, it becomes clear that these are not random events. Are these deaths somehow connected to a tragedy that occurred a decade earlier, or is another force at play that is intent on destroying the Farraday family? Left behind in their grief and now fear are five brothers and one sister. Their families are also pulled into the mystery, worried that they might also be at risk of destruction from an unknown killer. Is the patriarch of the family, Alan Farraday, somehow at the root of his family's despair? He had secrets that may have come home to roost and a dark past of lies and sexual scandal that may return to haunt his family again. The Farradays wait in fear for the next tragedy, and only time will tell whether they will find the courage to take a stand against an unknown foe, or succumb to a family curse too powerful to avoid.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among our greatest leaders are those driven by impulses they cannot completely control - by lust. Lust is not, however, an abstraction, it has definition. Definition that, given the impact of leaders who lust, is essential to extract. This book identifies six types of lust with which leaders are linked: 1. Power: the ceaseless craving to control. 2. Money: the limitless desire to accrue great wealth. 3. Sex: the constant hunt for sexual gratification. 4. Success: the unstoppable need to achieve. 5. Legitimacy: the tireless claim to identity and equity. 6. Legacy: the endless quest to leave a permanent imprint. Each of the core chapters focuses on different lusts and features a cast of characters who bring lust to life. In the real world leaders who lust can and often do have an enduring impact. This book therefore is counterintuitive - it focuses not on moderation, but on immoderation.
