Book excerpt: From the author of To the Lighthouse comes a new adventure for young readers about falling in love with the bush, and with hiking and being in the wild. It’s about disconnecting from technology. And discovering yourself. Harry’s perfect life was straying way off-track. He looked pleadingly at Mum. Surely she could see? Spending an entire weekend tramping around stinking-hot, snake-filled scrub was a horrible mistake. But doing it without a phone? That was just brutal. As it turns out, it was only the beginning ...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While it may seem that every possible attraction in New York City has been written about, Off the Beaten (Subway) Track is the city’s first guide to focus on one hundred unique, off-the-beaten-path destinations. Some are small museums, some are historic places long forgotten, some are stores that sell only odd things, and some are distinguished for their claim to fame as the world’s largest/smallest whatever. All of them are notable for the passion with which their proprietors and curators care for them, and all of them can be visited via the subway system as Suzanne Reisman directs you to which of the city’s 486 subway stations will get you closest. These attractions are the types of places and things that not only fit perfectly with the New Yorker’s psyche and ego but also satisfy a tourist’s desire to see the unusual. For example, the Big Apple is home to the world’s tallest Doric column, the world’s largest armory, the world’s largest cathedral, and the world’s largest Reform synagogue. The city also has a troll museum, a numismatic museum, a skyscraper museum, doll and toy museums, and a museum of comic and cartoon art. In many cases, half the fun of visiting these places is getting to meet the people behind them. Organized geographically to help you to explore the culture and diversity of the city’s great neighborhoods, Off the Beaten (Subway) Track offers venues in Manhattan (Lower, Middle, and Upper), Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island. Also included in many of the entries are nearby places of interest within walking distance that you might also want to visit while you’re in the neighborhood.

Book excerpt: In this concise volume, leading economist John B. Taylor offers empirical research to explain what caused the current financial crisis, what prolonged it, and what dramatically worsened it more than a year after it began. The evidence he presents strongly suggests that specific government actions and interventions are largely to blame and that any future government interventions must be based on a clearly stated diagnosis of the problem and a rationale for the interventions.

Book excerpt: Jarret Schecter here takes on his second epic train adventure, this time through the vast interior of Russia - taking pictures through the window of the Trans-Siberian railroad in the final months of 2009. What happens between Moscow and Vladivostok is not only predictive of what will happen in the worlds largest country both in terms of space and natural resources, but it also has some prophetic value with respect to the world in general. In many respects, this heartland or the body of Russia is an unpredictable and precarious place and, no less troubling, a Muscovite head on top that may be ambitious, arrogant or even vengeful. The images presented here, hint at a subtle yet a tense negotiation between Moscow and an almost 5,778 mile heartland.

Teague Martell has been License to Game's bassist for over a decade, and he's played Casanova for just as long, sleeping with almost everyone in his path. But unbeknownst to even his bandmates, it's always felt like going through the motions. His best friend and LtG drummer Christian Vogel has secrets of his own. Like that he's had a crush on Teague for as long as he's had crushes. And while LtG's lead singer may have made his solo plans public and sent the band into a tailspin, Christian's got a side gig as well-one he's been keeping under wraps. A nude photoshoot for a charity calendar has Teague seeing Christian in a different light-suddenly he knows what it is to want. But disagreements about the future of the band could impact their future as a couple. Christian and Teague have to decide whether their differences of opinion create a sweet harmony or if there's too much discord in the duet they're finally playing.

Over her unconventional and courageous life, she walked out of a suffocating marriage, witnessed the violence of Partition, lost her son for a night in a refugee camp, ate toast with Nehru and fell in love with a married man who would, in the course of their twenty-five-year relationship, become the Mayor of Delhi. Though she was born into privilege in Bhopal-the only Indian state to be ruled by women for four successive generations-her determination, independence and frankness make this a remarkable memoir and a crucial disruption in India's understanding of her own past.

Book excerpt: The identification of poor readers as “learning disabled” can be the first of many steps toward consigning students to a lifetime of reading failure. The very label that is meant to help children often becomes a burden that works against effective learning throughout their schooling. In this book, the authors identify the dangers of labeling children as reading or learning disabled, contending that a “reading disability” is not a unitary phenomenon. In order to diagnose and help children, educators and parents need to understand the multiple sources of reading difficulty before they can choose appropriate means to correct it.Drawing on recent research in cognitive psychology, the authors present a new theoretical model of reading disability that integrates a wide variety of findings across age and grade spans. Laid out in terms that are readily comprehensible to parents and practitioners, the model outlines the phases that are characteristic of the path to proficient reading, then describes five ways in which disabled readers may stray from this path. The key to the authors' work lies in fact that youngsters who stray from the path of normal reading acquisition often are not distinguishable from other children who are classified as “poor readers” rather than as “learning disabled.” This model is an especially useful one for practitioners because it both provides a broader view of reading disability than have many previous models and shows how reading disability relates to normal reading acquisition. Using illustrative case studies, the authors describe the five types of reading disabilities, explain how to properly assess them, and suggest ways to conquer them.
