Book excerpt: This thesis presents two original ontributions on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). The first is a thorough investigation of the error performance and channel capacity of asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM (ACO-OFDM). ACO-OFDM is a modulation scheme designed specifically for optical communications. The second concerns the use of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) OFDM in radio frequency (RF) systems. A new scheme which uses polynomial cancellation coding (PCC) OFDM with time offsets is proposed. This new scheme is robust to both carrier frequency offset (CFO) and channel estimation errors. OFDM has been used extensively to reduce the effect of dispersion in wired and wireless RF systems. Although dispersion is also a problem in optical wireless systems, OFDM has not until recently been considered for use in these. This is because optical wireless systems use intensity modulation (IM) and so the transmitted signals must be nonnegative and as a result conventional OFDM signals which are bipolar cannot be used directly. ACO-OFDM and DC biased optical OFDM (DCO-OFDM) are two non-negative forms of OFDM developed for optical systems. Both are robust to ISI but ACO-OFDM is in most cases much more power efficient. In this thesis results are presented for the performance of ACO-OFDM, DCO-OFDM and conventional optical modulation schemes such as on-off keying (OOK) and pulse position modulation (PPM) for both dispersive and non-dispersive channels. These show that ACO-OFDM is more tolerant to dispersion and requires less optical power than the other modulation schemes. To investigate the theoretical limits of an ACO-OFDM system, closed form analytical expressions for the channel capacity of ACO-OFDM are derived both for a flat channel and for representative dispersive optical wireless channels. The capacity of ACO-OFDM cannot be compared with the general case of an intensity modulated signal, because no general solution for this has yet been found. Instead the mutual information of an ACO-OFDM signal is calculated and compared with two other signal distributions: an exponential distribution and a clipped-Gaussian distribution. The combination of OFDM and MIMO has been used in several radio standards. However, MIMO OFDM systems like single-input single-output (SISO) OFDM systems are very sensitive to CFO. An improved MIMO PCC OFDM system is proposed in this thesis. In this system, the signals transmitted from different antennae have different time offsets. At the receiver, OFDM symbols are demodulated by using each of these time offsets in a matched detection window. This system shows better performance than a MIMO PCC OFDM system without time offsets in two cases: when there are channel estimation errors and in MIMO systems with more transmit antennae than receive antennae.

Book excerpt: Taking a coherent and logical approach, this book describes the potential use of co-ordinated multipoint systems supported by radio over fiber. It covers an impressive breadth of topics, ranging from components, subsystem and system architecture, to network management and business perspectives. The authors show the importance of radio over fiber in eliminating or mitigating against the current, perceived barriers to the use of co-ordinated multipoint, and the drivers for standardisation activities in future mobile/wireless systems over the next few years. The book brings together the system concept for centralized processing, including what is required for co-existence with legacy wireless systems, the algorithms that can be used for improving wireless bandwidth utilization at physical and MAC layers and the radio over fiber network and link design necessary to support the wireless system. Other important research is also covered as the authors look at compensating for radio over fiber impairments and providing simple network management functions. A study of service provision and the business case for such a future wireless system is also fully considered. This book comes at an important time for future wireless systems with standardization of fourth generation wireless systems still ongoing. The content enables readers to make key decisions about future standardisation and their own research work. The business analysis also makes the book useful to those involved in deciding the future directions of telecoms organisations. This information will be core to their decision-making as it provides technical knowledge of the state-of-the-art but also system level assessments of what is possible in a business environment.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on optical wireless communications (OWC), an emerging technology with huge potential for the provision of pervasive and reliable next-generation communications networks. It shows how the development of novel and efficient wireless technologies can contribute to a range of transmission links essential for the heterogeneous networks of the future to support various communications services and traffic patterns with ever-increasing demands for higher data-transfer rates. The book starts with a chapter reviewing the OWC field, which explains different sub-technologies (visible-light, ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) communications) and introduces the spectrum of application areas (indoor, vehicular, terrestrial, underwater, intersatellite, deep space, etc.). This provides readers with the necessary background information to understand the specialist material in the main body of the book, which is in four parts. The first of these deals with propagation modelling and channel characterization of OWC channels at different spectral bands and with different applications. The second starts by providing a unified information-theoretic treatment of OWC and then discusses advanced physical-layer methodologies (including, but not limited to: advanced coding, modulation diversity, cooperation and multi-carrier techniques) and the ultimate limitations imposed by practical constraints. On top of the physical layer come the upper-layer protocols and cross-layer designs that are the subject of the third part of the book. The last part of the book features a chapter-by-chapter assessment of selected OWC applications. Optical Wireless Communications is a valuable reference guide for academic researchers and practitioners concerned with the future development of the world’s communication networks. It succinctly but comprehensively presents the latest advances in the field.

Book excerpt: This dissertation focuses on optical communications having recently attracted significant attentions as a promising complementary technique for radio frequency (RF) in both short- and long-range communications. These systems offer significant technical and operational advantages such as higher capacity, virtually unlimited reuse, unregulated spectrum and robustness to electromagnetic interference. Optical wireless communication (OWC) can be used both indoors and outdoors. Part of the dissertation contains novel results on terrestrial free-space optical (FSO) communications. FSO communication is a line-of sight technique that uses lasers for high rate wireless communication over distances up to several kilometers. In comparison to RF counterparts, a FSO link has a very high optical bandwidth available, allowing aggregate data rates on the order of Tera bits per second (1 Tera bits per second is 1000 Giga bites per second). However, FSO suffers limitations. The major limitation of the terrestrial FSO communication systems is the atmospheric turbulence, which produces fluctuations in the irradiance of the transmitted optical beam, as a result of random variations in the refractive index through the link. The existence of atmospheric-induced turbulence degrades the performance of FSO links particularly with a transmission distance longer than 1 kilometer. The identification of a tractable probability density function (pdf) to describe atmospheric turbulence under all irradiance fluctuation regimes is crucial in order to study the reliability of a terrestrial FSO system. This dissertation addresses this daunting problem and proposes a novel statistical model that accurately describes turbulence-induced fading under all irradiance conditions and unifies most of the proposed statistical models derived until now in the literature. The proposed model is important for the research community working on FSO communications because it allows them to fully capitalize on the potentials of currently used FSO systems. Furthermore, utilizing this new statistical channel model, closed-form expressions for the diversity gain and the error rate performance of FSO links with spatial diversity are derived. In addition to addressing ways to improve outdoor FSO communication systems, this dissertation addresses some major challenges in indoor visible light communication (VLC). VLC is an advantageous technique that is proposed for wireless indoor communications. In VLC systems, the existence of multiple paths between the transmitter and receiver causes multipath distortion, particularly in links using non-directional transmitters and receivers, or in links relying upon non-line of-sight propagation. This multipath distortion can lead to intersymbol interference (ISI) at high bit rates. Multicarrier modulation usually implemented by orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) can be used to mitigate ISI and multipath dispersion. Nevertheless, the performance of VLC systems employing OFDM modulation is significantly affected by nonlinear characteristic of light-emitting diode (LED) due to the large peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of OFDM signal. In other words, signal amplitudes below the LED turn-on-voltage and above the LED saturation point are clipped. This dissertation targets these important issues and successfully addresses them by developing some techniques to reduce high PAPR of optical OFDM signal and determining the optimum operating characteristics of LEDs for combined lighting and communications applications. VLC can also provide a practical solution for indoor positioning as global positioning system (GPS) does not provide an accurate and rapid indoor positioning since GPS radio signals are attenuated and scattered by walls of large buildings and other objects. A practical VLC system would be likely to deploy the same configuration for both positioning and communication purposes where high speed data rates are desired. This dissertation also proposes a novel OFDM VLC system that provides a high data rate transmission and can be used for both indoor positioning and communications where the multipath reflections are taken into account. Description of an experimental demonstration is also part of the dissertation where a software defined radio (SDR) was employed as the primary hardware and software interface to verify some of the results of the topics discussed earlier.

Book excerpt: Orthogonal Frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is used widely in wired and wireless technologies. In this thesis, OFDM in two application areas are studied. The first area of study is, OFDM in wireless access in vehicular environment (WAVE) which is a radio frequency (RF) wireless technology. The other area of study is, OFDM in indoor optical wireless communication (OWC) which is an optical wireless technology. In OFDM in WAVE, a novel method is developed to accurately estimate the relative speed of vehicles using the OFDM symbols exchanged. In OFDM in indoor OWC systems, the limitations of existing OFDM modulation schemes such as diversity combined ACO-OFDM are investigated and ways to address those shortcomings are devised. Also in this thesis, a novel optical modulation scheme is developed, which shows higher optical power efficiency than the two conventional schemes: asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM (ACO-OFDM) and DC biased optical OFDM (DCO-OFDM).

Book excerpt: The growth of Internet traf?c in recent years surpassed the prediction of one decade ago. Data stream in individual countries already reached terabit/s level. To cope with the petabit class demands of traf?c in coming years the communication engineers are required to go beyond the incremental improvement of today’s technology. A most promising breakthrough would be the introduction of modulation f- mats enabling higher spectral ef?ciency than that of binary on–off keying scheme, virtually the global standard of ?ber-optic communication systems. In wireless communication systems, techniques of high spectral density modulation have been well developed, but the required techniques in optical frequency domain are much more complicated because of the heavier ?uctuation levels. Therefore the past trials of coherent optical modulation/detection schemes were not successful. However, the addition of high-speed digital signal processing technology is the fundam- tal difference between now and two decades ago, when trials of optical coherent communication systems were investigated very seriously. This approach of digital coherent technology has attracted keen interest among communication specialists, as indicated by the rapid increase in the pioneering presentations at the post-deadline sessions of major international conferences. For example, 32 terabit/s transmission in a ?ber experiment based on this technology was reported in post-deadline session of Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC) 2009. The advancement of the digital coherent technologies will inevitably affect the network architecture in terms of the network resource management for the new generation photonic networks, rather than will simply provide with huge transmission capacity.

Book excerpt: Intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) is a cost-effective optical communication strategy which finds wide applications in fiber communication, free-space optical communication, and indoor visible light communication. In IM/DD, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), originally employed in radio frequency communication, is considered as a strong candidate solution to combat with channel distortions. In this research, we investigate various potential OFDM forms that are suitable for IM/DD channel. We will elaborate the design principles of different OFDM transmitters and investigate different types of receivers including the proposed iterative receiver. In addition, we will analyze the spectral efficiency and decoding complexities of different OFDM systems to give a whole picture of their performance. Finally, simulation results are given to assess the detection performance of different receivers.

Book excerpt: Along with the rapidly increasing demand for wireless data while more and more crowded radio frequency (RF) spectrum, optical wireless communications (OWC) become a promising candidate to complement conventional RF communications, especially for indoor short and medium range data transmissions. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is considered for OWC due to its ability to boost data rates. However, the average emitted optical power and dynamic range of driving signals of LEDs are two major constraints in OWC. OFDM waveforms exhibits high upper and lower peak-to-average power ratios (PAPRs), which make OFDM signals optical power inefficient and easy to violate the dynamic range of LEDs, resulting clipping and nonlinear distortions. In this dissertation, we analyze and design optical power and dynamic range constrained OWC systems, for which OFDM is our major subject. We first derive distributions of upper PAPR and lower PAPR of OWC-OFDM signals. Then we analyze the clipped OFDM signals in term of error vector magnitude (EVM), signal-to-distortion ratio (SDR), and achievable data rates under both optical power and dynamic range constraints. The next part of this dissertation is the OFDM system design for visible light communications (VLC) considering illumination requirement. We investigate the illumination-to-communication efficiency (ICE) in VLC-OFDM, and design the brightness control and flickering mitigation schemes for VLC-OFDM. In the end, to reduce the complexity of driving circuits of LEDs, we propose using delta-sigma modulators in VLC-OFDM systems to convert continuous magnitude OFDM symbols into two-level LED driver signals without loss of the communication theory advantages of OFDM.
