Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of well-researched essays assesses the uses and misuses of history 25 years after the collapse of Soviet hegemony in Eastern Europe. As opposed to the revival of national histories that seemed to be the prevailing historiographical approach of the 1990s, the last decade has seen a particular set of narratives equating Nazism and Communism. This provides opportunities to exonerate wartime collaboration, casting the nation as victim even when its government was allied with Germany. While the Jewish Holocaust is acknowledged, its meaning and significance are obfuscated. In their comparative analysis the authors are also interested in new practices of ‘Europeanness’. Therefore their presentations of Slovak, Hungarian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Serbian, Bosnian, Croatian and Slovenian post-communist memory politics move beyond the common national myths in order to provide a new insight into transnational interactions and exchanges in Europe in general. The juxtaposition of these politics, the processes in other parts of Europe, the modes of remembering shaped by displacement and the transnational enable a close encounter with the divergences and assess the potential of the formation of common, European memory practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Harry Potter series of books and movies are wildly popular. Many Christians see the books as largely if not entirely harmless. Others regard them as dangerous and misleading. In his book A Landscape with Dragons, Harry Potter critic Michael O'Brien examines contemporary children's literature and finds it spiritually and morally wanting. His analysis, written before the rise of the popular Potter books and films, anticipates many of the problems Harry Potter critics point to. A Landscape with Dragons is a controversial, yet thoughtful study of what millions of young people are reading and the possible impact such reading may have on them. In this study of the pagan invasion of children's culture, O'Brien, the father of six, describes his own coming to terms with the effect it has had on his family and on most families in Western society. His analysis of the degeneration of books, films, and videos for the young is incisive and detailed. Yet his approach is not simply critical, for he suggests a number of remedies, including several tools of discernment for parents and teachers in assessing the moral content and spiritual impact of this insidious revolution. In doing so, he points the way to rediscovery of time-tested sources, and to new developments in Christian culture. If you have ever wondered why a certain children's book or film made you feel uneasy, but you couldn't figure out why, this book is just what you need. This completely revised, much expanded second edition also includes a very substantial recommended reading list of over 1,000 books for kindergarten through highschool.

Book excerpt: The truth about demons is far stranger—and even more fascinating—than what's commonly believed. Are demons real? Are they red creatures with goatees holding pitchforks and sitting on people's shoulders while whispering bad things? Did a third of the angels really rebel with Satan? Are demons and "principalities and powers" just terms for the same entities, or are they different members of the kingdom of darkness? Is the world a chaotic mess because of what happened in Eden, or is there more to the story of evil? What people believed about evil spiritual forces in ancient biblical times is often very different than what people have been led to believe about them today. And this ancient worldview is missing from most attempts to treat the topic. In Demons, Michael Heiser debunks popular presuppositions about the very real powers of darkness. Rather than traditions, stories, speculations, or myths, Demons is grounded in what ancient people of both the Old and New Testament eras believed about evil spiritual forces and in what the Bible actually says. You'll come away with a sound, biblical understanding of demons, supernatural rebellion, evil spirits, and spiritual warfare.

Book excerpt: As Christian listened, he was again taken aback by Michaels response to the man who, for more than twenty-five years, had tried having him destroyed. Livid with anger, Christian shouted out, Kill him! Why spare one who is a minion of Satan? Send him into the abyss to join with his companions! With a look of irritation, Michael replied, For one, I did not send the beasts into the abyss. I do not have the power to do so. And two, who are you or I to pass judgment upon a man? And yes, he is a man, a deceived man. The Word of God has a plan for Damon Weirguld, and his plan for him must play itself out! Christian shrunk back after Michaels rebuke, though in his heart, he was not sure he was satisfied with Michaels answer. Christians thoughts went back, and he rehashed all the evil that Damon had perpetrated upon him for the last twenty-five years. Even now, the mans hatred for Christian was evidenced by his attack. Knowing what Christian was thinking, Michael responded, Yes, he has, but Damon was created to do just as he has done. If not for his actions, the Word of God would not be where it is today. It is just as the religious leaders during the time of Jesus. They performed just as the Word of God knew they would. They demanded that Jesus be sent to the cross. What appears to be evil in your eyes does not mean that God needs your approval to carry out his plans. Sometimes, it is the very things we strive against that God uses to advance his Word!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular blog The Monsters Know What They’re Doing comes a compilation of villainous battle plans for Dungeon Masters. In the course of a Dungeons & Dragons game, a Dungeon Master has to make one decision after another in response to player behavior—and the better the players, the more unpredictable their behavior! It’s easy for even an experienced DM to get bogged down in on-the-spot decision-making or to let combat devolve into a boring slugfest, with enemies running directly at the player characters and biting, bashing, and slashing away. In The Monsters Know What They’re Doing, Keith Ammann lightens the DM’s burden by helping you understand your monsters’ abilities and develop battle plans before your fifth edition D&D game session begins. Just as soldiers don’t whip out their field manuals for the first time when they’re already under fire, a DM shouldn’t wait until the PCs have just encountered a dozen bullywugs to figure out how they advance, fight, and retreat. Easy to read and apply, The Monsters Know What They're Doing is essential reading for every DM.

The world is moving rapidly towards the one world government that is the beast which both Daniel and John prophesied would rise to power in the last days. Chapman warns us, 'The beast is here now and is in the advanced stages of formation. Its military arsenal already exists in entities like the UN, NATO, the EU, The US, China and Russia.

Book excerpt: Incorporating a diversity of approaches from a variety of disciplines, this book provides a major reassessment of the question of nihilism in modernity and interrogates this through the growing interest in angels and demons in contemporary philosophy. The collection examines the uncanny return of angelic and demonic principles in current cultural production and thinking and aims to show that the repression of thought about spiritual entities at the onset of modernity is linked to the appearance of a new form of evil that manifests itself through nihilism.

Blavatsky's works delve into esoteric and spiritual philosophies, exploring topics such as karma, reincarnation, and the nature of reality. Her writing style is intricate and dense, often drawing from a wide range of religious and philosophical traditions. This collection provides a glimpse into the spiritual beliefs of the late 19th century, offering valuable insights into the occult and mystical practices of the time. Blavatsky's works continue to be studied and debated by scholars of comparative religion and esotericism. Helena Blavatsky, a Russian writer and philosopher, co-founded the Theosophical Society and played a key role in the development of modern Western esotericism. Her travels and encounters with mystics and spiritual teachers around the world deeply influenced her writings. Blavatsky's works are considered foundational texts in the New Age movement and continue to inspire seekers of spiritual wisdom. I highly recommend The Collected Works of Helena Blavatsky to readers interested in the history of Western esotericism, occultism, and spiritual philosophy. Blavatsky's writings offer a unique perspective on the mysteries of the universe and provide a rich source of knowledge for those exploring alternative spiritual paths.

Book excerpt: The final installment in the Lost Histories saga: "When dragons make war, Krynn can only tremble in the shaodw of angry wings." Aurican and Darlantan, mighty serpents of gold and silver, have been nurtured in a world of wisdom, meditation, and sublime faith. However, on the other side of Ansalon, Crematia—a dragon of red—inherits the Dark Queen's legacy of betrayal, violence, conquest, and plunder. The advent of a worldwide war sweeps these powerful beings and many more into desperate strife. Battles rage over Krynn with a fury that threatens to annihilate nations and whole races—even dragonkind. As campaigns ebb and flow, generations of lesser mortals come and go, and the great serpents are left to determine the fate of the world. Their triumphs may create a destiny of all-encompassing light or cast the world beneath the shadow of ultimate darkness.
