Book excerpt: The third triennial congress of the International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus (lSDE) was held in Munich in September 1986 under the presidency of J. Rudiger Siewert. The very well organized and epoch-making meeting was part of the International Esophageal Week and was held in conjunction with the International Conference of Esophageal Diseases, the European Study Group of Diseases of the Esophagus (GEEMO), and International Organization for Statistical Studies of Esophageal Diseases (OESO). I am very pleased that it has been possible to publish the proceedings of the congress so rapidly. The problems associated with diseases of the esophagus are multifaceted, varying considerably according to locality; their study thus neces sitates a large international forum, which is one of the founding aims of the ISDE. We hope that this volume, by virtue of the in-depth and up-dated reports it contains, can playa role in advancing the work being done in this field. Finally I should like to express my heartfelt appreciation to Professor Siewert and Dr. Holscher for their contribution toward the success of the congress. Kiyoshi Inokuchi, M.D., F.A.C.S. President of the ISDE Preface The scientific knowledge about esophageal diseases and their treatment has rapidly developed and increased within the last 10 years. The present book reproduces for 1987 the topical state of the art about pathology, pathophysiology, diagnostic, and therapy of benign and malignant diseases of the esophagus.

A number of surgeons publish and focus in malignant diseases of the esophagus, but this text emphasizes the benign ones, their problems and how to face them with the new available resources and technology. This book describes the different diagnostic tools available, as well as the different therapies for the management of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and its potential complications like Barret’s or strictures, and the associated anatomical abnormalities such as hiatal hernia or short esophagus, and more. Motility disorders of the esophagus, esophageal diverticula and perforations are also discussed. Different devices and approaches can be used to treat these diseases and they are covered and explained in different chapters of the book. Written by experts in the field, Benign Esophageal Disease provides surgeons and physicians with a concise and comprehensive summary of the current state of the field and will help guide patient management.

The burning sensation caused in the chest due to acid reflux is a very common esophageal disease. Prolonged exposure to the gastric acids may erode the lining of the esophagus, leading to Barrett's esophagus. It is a clinical condition which is considered a high risk factor for adenocarcinoma. Some of the other conditions of esophagus are Chagas disease, esophageal cancer, esohageal dysphagia, esophagitis, Killian-Jamieson diverticulum, neurogenic dysphagia, Zenker's diverticulum, etc. An X-ray of swallowed barium is generally used to assess the shape and size of the esophagus and any underlying mass. Through a procedure called endoscopy, it is possible to visualize the interior of the esophagus. It also allows a biopsy to be taken that is useful for the diagnosis of cancer. Esophageal cancer is usually managed with chemotherapy, radiotherapy or the partial surgical removal of the esophagus. The topics included in this book on esophageal disease are of utmost significance and bound to provide incredible insights to readers. This book presents researches and studies performed by experts across the globe on the diagnosis and treatment of esophageal diseases. It will prove to be immensely beneficial to students and researchers involved in gastroenterology.

Book excerpt: In an attempt to attain the best possible delimitation of all the problems posed today by benign diseases of the esophagus, 181 authors each agreed to answer one or more of 210 questions that had been drawn up on the subject. These questions, each one deliberately limited and difficult, mostly concerned reflux esophagitis: its natural history, the means of its diagnosis, all existing treatments, and its eventual degeneration. The authors approached are today's most reputed specialists in the fields of epidemiology, gastroenterology, endoscopy, pathology, and surgery of esophageal diseases. The authors were all assigned one or more questions in their own field, none of which was simple: all did their best to synthesize in their replies their own experience on the precise point under review and included all the most useful bibliographical references on the topic. The book is thus the result of an original, individual approach to try to pinpoint the heart of a problem. The 210 answers succeed one another in logical progression according to the different diagnostic and therapeutic stages, specifying, at each step, the degree of precision sought. Consequently, the reader has at his disposal an exceptional synthesis of facts and concepts. Opening the book at random he will find at once the detail he is looking for, the professional opinion he is lacking, or the development of a question he had perhaps not yet asked himself.

This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Esophageal diseases are amongst the most common gastrointestinal illnesses encountered by both the gastroenterologist as well as the primary care physician. Gastroesophageal reflux symptoms affect 20% of adult Americans on a weekly or more frequent basis, and Barrett’s esophagus, a pre-cancerous lesion of the distal esophagus associated with chronic GERD, is prevalent in 2-6% of the adult population. Additionally, there have been remarkable advances in the care of esophageal diseases in the last several years, with the development of new imaging modalities, new physiological tests, and promising data emerging with respect to biomarkers for esophageal neoplasia. A relatively new clinical entity, eosinophilic esophagitis, is being characterized in the literature, and the ubiquity of this condition is now recognized. Given the dynamic nature of this area, the strides being made in esophageal diseases, and the importance of these diseases to clinicians practicing both subspecialty and general medicine, a volume dedicated to esophageal diseases is timely and necessary. The goals of this work are to familiarize clinicians with advances in care of patients with esophageal disorders, and to update them on new trends in epidemiology and outcomes of these diseases.
