Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Has the potential to change how cricket is discussed, judged, coached and played.' James Astill. 'A fascinating contribution and a testimony to the observation that sport, life, statistics and obsession can be great fun. ' Lord Nicholas Stern. Who are the best and the greatest batsmen, bowlers, captains, teams and all-rounders in ODI history? How accurately can cricket matches be predicted? Which teams and players perform the best under stress? Who is likely to become the most successful team of this decade and why. Cricket has its glorious uncertainties but some things are less uncertain than commonly believed. Criconomics breaks new ground in cricket research by eliminating subjectivity to bring home intriguing truths for both serious as well as casual fans. It explores what really works in predicting player and team performances and shows how batting and bowling can be evaluated in a symmetrical manner. After reading Criconomics, you will be able to size up batsmen and bowlers, predict first innings scores and chances of successful chases that too, without even having to use a calculator! The book also speculates on the future of Test, ODI and T20 cricket and gives recommendations for all the three forms of cricket to flourish.

Download or read book The Chinese Economic Transformation written by Song, Ligang and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2019-07-10 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chinese Economic Transformation, the 19th volume in the China Update book series, provides an opportunity for young economists to share their views on various issues relating to the Chinese economic transformation. More than half of the contributors to this book are female scholars. Some of the contributors are rising stars in the studies of the Chinese economy and economic transition, and some only recently received their PhDs and are on their way to establishing themselves in the field of China studies. But they have one thing in common: to passionately observe, study and research what is going on in the Chinese economic transformation during the reform period; and, by so doing, make contributions to the policy debates on, and general understanding of, the Chinese economy. The chapters in this volume include an in-depth probe into challenges in capital and credit allocation due to financial friction and policy distortions; investigating the causes of growth slow-down in China and suitable policy responses; the evolution of the household registration system and its impact on off-farm employment and the integration of rural and urban labour markets; the growth, scale and characteristics of nonstandard employment; the development of rural e-commerce and its economic impact; innovation performance of listed enterprises in China; financial services liberalisation and its impact on firms’ performance; financing support schemes for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the effect on banks’ credit allocation to SMEs; the potential costs of US–China trade conflict and ways to mitigate them; gender income gap in China’s labour market; causes of blockage of Chinese overseas direct investment and strategies to reduce the probability of encountering obstacles; and the role of state capital in the iron ore boom in Australia. The great variety of topics in this year’s Update allows readers to understand the current shape of the Chinese economy and to think deeply about policies and necessary reforms for future growth and development.

This book was released on 2013-12-02 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government is shifting the goal-posts on fuel poverty so that official statistics record far fewer households as fuel-poor. The changes to the fuel poverty definition and target, in part being made through amendments to the Energy Bill, should be stopped unless the Government is prepared to make a public commitment to end fuel poverty altogether. A short-term bid to cut bills must not throw energy and climate change policy off-course. In the longer term green levies could actually keep bills down if they drive energy efficiency improvements that cut the cost of heating our homes. Insulating homes and supporting green technologies is vital to help the fuel poor and cut the emissions causing climate change. At the Rio+20 Summit and the G20, the Government committed itself to phasing out fossil fuel subsidies that encourage wasteful consumption and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. The Government must set a target to reduce subsidies to harmful fossil fuels. The Government should also use the Autumn Statement as an opportunity to provide a clear and comprehensive analysis of energy subsidies in the UK. The report also looks at whether Government support for the new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point constitutes a subsidy and concludes that it does, despite the Government's assurance otherwise. The Government's policy of 'no public subsidy for new nuclear' requires it to provide only 'similar' support to that provided to other types of energy, but even on that basis the deal for Hinkley Point C is 'dissimilar', notably on support for decommissioning and waste.

Book Synopsis Assistance in chronic conflict areas: evidence from South Sudan by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Assistance in chronic conflict areas: evidence from South Sudan written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2020-02-21 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People living in context prone to or affected by conflict suffer from many forms of deprivation. The international community plays a crucial role in strengthening the wellbeing of affected populations, including their food security. Unfortunately, quite often people exposed to conflict are not reached by national or international assistance because of targeting, accessibility, and marginalization. This can ultimately translate into a further deterioration of their food security status. This paper combines a geo-referenced household dataset collected in South Sudan in 2017 with the Armed Conflict Location and Events Data (ACLED), including information on conflict events. The collection of a very detailed household questionnaire in areas extensively affected by violence allows the analysis in a country generally unexplored by the empirical literature. We analyze the variation in conflict exposure across different households that live in the same district and we test the link between conflict exposure and humanitarian assistance. We find that those who live in the higher-intensity conflict areas, received less assistance than those less exposed to the conflict. The association is stronger with in kind provision of inputs for agriculture and livestock rather than for direct food assistance. We suggest the presence of social elites and marginalization as a possible explanation. We discuss the advantages of using cash transfers through mobile phones to normatively decided beneficiaries; evidence also supports interventions combining input distribution and markets’ rehabilitation. More evidence is needed on the modalities of delivery of humanitarian assistance in different food crises contexts.
Book Synopsis Knowledge, Policy and Power in International Development by : Jones, Harry
Download or read book Knowledge, Policy and Power in International Development written by Jones, Harry and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2012-04-18 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an academically rigorous yet practical guide to efforts to understand how knowledge, policy and power interact to promote or prevent change. It offers a power analysis perspective on the knowledge-policy process, illustrated with rich empirical examples from the field of international development, combined with practical guidance on the implications of such an approach. It provides ways to identify and address problems that have hampered previous attempts to improve the space between knowledge and policy; such as difficulties in analysing political context, persistent asymmetric relationships between actors, ignorance of the contributions of different types of knowledge, and misconceptions of the roles played by intermediary organisations. Most importantly, the book gives readers the ability to develop strategies for negotiating the complexity of the knowledge-policy interface more effectively, so as to contribute to policy dialogues, influence policy change, and implement policies and programmes more effectively. The authors focus on the dynamics of the knowledge-policy interface in international development; offering novel theoretical insights and methodological approaches that are applicable to a broader array of policy arenas and their audiences, including academics, practitioners and students.
Download or read book Aid to Africa written by Gordon Cumming and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end of the Cold War forced Western donors to rethink their aid relations with Africa. This book looks at two of these donors, France and Britain, and asks whether the development programmes of these former colonial powers have undergone radical changes since the end of the Old World Order. It focuses on the introduction of a controversial new ’regime’ trend - political conditionality - and uses policy models to illustrate the driving forces behind this new development strategy and explain substantial differences in France and Britain’s practice of political conditionality in Togo and Kenya. Overall, this volume - the first comparative study of French and British aid in the post-Cold War period - offers fresh insights into the evolution of the political assistance agenda and into deeper forces at work within the French and UK policy processes.

Book Synopsis Trade and Developing Countries by : Kathryn Morton
Download or read book Trade and Developing Countries written by Kathryn Morton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reissue, initially published in 1977, is an introduction to contemporary trading positions and problems of developing countries. The authors examine the main export options of Third World countries and consider the roles of the key international organisations – GATT, UNCTAD, etc – and those of national governments and foreign investors. The authors complete their review with an examination of the way in which numbers of developing countries have tried to diversify their trade relations, particularly by creating Third World trading groups. Contemporary economic difficulties and their impact upon the Third World is also discussed, with the authors displaying a guarded optimism about real changes in world economic relations, citing factors such as the spread of trade among developing countries and the increase processing of raw materials as potential for the wider participation of developing countries in international trade.
