Book excerpt: To many, the world is a place where people are friendly to each other and value the company of others. For the rest of the population, they seem to live in a racist section of the world that time seems to have forgotten. My opinion lies somewhere in the middle. It is because of this, my mind became cluttered. It became a place where thoughts of love and optimism were constantly battling hatred and pessimism. This particular collection of poetry is an inside look at that battle. It is a journey through my life, experiences and my viewpoint of the world. It is written as if each poem is a conversation with the reader, which gives everyone a sense of comfort and it allows the words to be genuine. The poems were therapy during my time of need and I hope they are meaningful to all who see them. What is life? What is love? What is death? These questions, among others, have been able to stump the minds of the world's scholars since the beginning of time. Each word brings up different emotions and forces every person to recall moments in their lives that can easily go from one extreme to the other. The journey individuals take to find their own answers to these questions vary just as much as the people themselves. This book just happens to be a small poetic sample of my journey thus far. Like everyone else, I have been in love, but I have also had my heart broken. There have been times when I have enjoyed life, but I have also had to deal with the pain of death. For some, verbally speaking about their experience helps them deal with their pain. Others, such as myself, have a difficult time speaking about the past. So, we choose to write about it. With my writing, I have been able to recall and deal with the emotions of my past. Although I have dealt with negativity, seeing a written record of days gone by allows my outlook on life to remain positive. We all have individual views and descriptions on the world; this is just My World, My Words. JACOB G. GROVEY began writing early in life. At the age of eight, he first saw people actually valued his words. He was offered the opportunity to write for a magazine, but as great as the opportunity was, Jacob passed on it because he didn't want any pressure to be associated with his writing. As the years passed, he found himself writing less and less, and before he knew it, he had gone several years without writing anything. As he thought back to the times when he wrote daily, he soon became upset with himself for going so long without putting his thoughts onto paper. In 2003, he vowed to never let that happen again. Now he says, "I promise you, the times that you'll catch me without some sort of notepad and pencil are gonna be few and far between because you never know when the inspiration will hit."

Book excerpt: Mothers sadly do not often receive the praise they deserve for their self-sacrifice and hard work. Franklin Douglas sings of their wondrous works in his new poetry collection Ode to Motherhood. Via the medium of forty-five poetic short stories, he captures the philosophical and moral essence of mothers’ emotions. Through vivid, vibrant prose, Douglas outlines the characteristics of earth’s mothers and gives credence to the care, beauty, and purity of motherhood. His words resonate with all readers who have been touched by a mother’s love, especially those who walk life’s path of conscious seeking. These poems are genuine and true. Douglas hopes to educate the generations to come through his insights. His poems are minimemoirs that pay homage to both the biological as well as voluntary mothers of the world. Mothers are to be celebrated for their hard work and endless devotion. Setting the tone for children and adults of all ages, embrace the mothers in your life and thank them for all they’ve done.

Book excerpt: By the critically praised author of A Million Quiet Revolutions, this YA contemporary sapphic romance told in verse is about a bisexual teen girl who falls in and out of love over the course of one fateful summer. It’s a few months before senior year and Claire Kemp, a closeted bisexual, is finally starting to admit she might be falling in love with her best friend, Sophia, who she’s known since they were four. Trying to pay off the fine from the crash that totals Lars, her beloved car, Claire takes a job at the local nursing home up the street from her house. There she meets Lena, an eighty-eight-year-old lesbian woman who tells her stories about what it was like growing up gay in the 1950s and ’60s. As Claire spends more time with Lena and grows more confident of her identity, another girl, Pen, comes into the picture, and Claire is caught between two loves–one familiar and well-worn, the other new and untested.

Book excerpt: **From the Sunday Times Bestselling Author** Life-affirming - THE TELEGRAPH Wonderful - INDEPENDENT She made it her mission to learn how to be default happy rather than default disgruntled - RADIO 4 - WOMAN'S HOUR Take a leaf out of Gray's book and be kinder to yourself by appreciating life just as it is - IRISH TIMES This book came to me in an hour of need - during lockdown when I had to focus on the positive, appreciate simple things, not lose my shit, and value each day. It was a pure joy for me and held my hand - SADIE FROST Interesting and joyful. Lights a path that could help us to build resilience against society's urging to compare life milestones with peers - LANCET PSYCHIATRY Underwhelmed by your ordinary existence? Disillusioned with your middlin' wage, average body, 'bijou' living situation and imperfect loved ones? Welcome to the club. There are billions of us. The 'default disenchanted'. But, it's not us being brats. Two deeply inconvenient psychological phenomenons conspire against our satisfaction. We have negatively-biased brains, which zoom like doom-drones in on what's wrong with our day, rather than what's right. (Back in the mists of time, this negative bias saved our skins, but now it just makes us anxious). Also, something called the 'hedonic treadmill' means we eternally quest for better, faster, more, like someone stuck on a dystopian, never-ending treadmill. Thankfully, there are scientifically-proven ways in which we can train our brains to be more positive-seeking. And to take a rest from this tireless pursuit. Whew. Catherine Gray knits together illuminating science and hilarious storytelling, unveiling captivating research showing that big bucks don't mean big happiness, extraordinary experiences have a 'comedown' and budget weddings predict a lower chance of divorce. She reminds us what an average body actually is, reveals that exercising for weight loss means we do less exercise, and explores the modern tendency to not just try to keep up with the Murphys, but keep up with the Mega-Murphies (see: the social media elite). Come on in to this soulful and life-affirming read, to discover why an ordinary life may well be the most satisfying one of all.
