Book excerpt: My husband Danny was a wonderful man with a great sense of humor. He loved spending a day on the water fishing with friends and or family. There have been many a great story develop from those fishing trips. This book is a true story based on one of those such trips. On this particular day Danny took a friend named Fred fishing and this is about the events that happened after returning to the dock. Fred was 73 and well over 6 ' tall at the time and didn't know how to swim. We lived on a canal in Pelican Cove and on this day the tide was low. However, when you can't swim depth doesn't matter. The story has been told over and over and "thank goodness" it turned into a funny story from what could have been a tragedy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Maple ODE Lab Book is intended to provide a thorough introduc tion to using symbolic computation software to model, solve, explore, and visualize ordinary differential equations. It is best used as a supplement to existing texts (see the bibliography for some of our recommended texts). Maple was chosen as our software package because of its ease-of-use, affordability, and popularity at many universities and colleges around the world. The version being used is Maple V Release 4. If you have a previous release of Maple, some of the commands shown in this lab book will work differently (or not at all), but the basic groundwork for solving ODEs hasn't changed. Speak to your system administrator about upgrading to Release 4, or contact: Waterloo Maple Inc. 450 Phillip Street Waterloo, Ontario CANADA N2L 5J2 Phone: (519) 747-2373 FAX: (519) 747-5284 E-mail: [email protected] WWW: http://www.maplesoft.com 1 2 • Chapter 1. Introduction How This Lab Book Is Organized Each subsequent chapter of this lab book contains information and ex amples of how to apply Maple to various elements of ordinary differential equations. It is suggested that you read the chapters with your computer on and Maple V Release 4 running. You can then execute many of the com mands yourself and experiment by changing various parameters and/or initial conditions, observing the corresponding changes in the results.

Scott lives in a Loop hotel with his Great Uncle Ode while waiting for the annulment of his parents’ marriage. Willie and Scott spend the summer commiserating and enjoying Chicago, with Willie educating Scott on pop culture and highlights of her city and Scott sharing with her opera, the library, and hikes in the park. Soon, though, it’s time for them both to return to reality. Alone on his last night at Ode’s hotel, Scott discovers a distraught Willie, who threatens to jump from the roof, having accidentally killed her stepfather while fending off another sexual advance. Scott talks her down and convinces her to run away to Ode’s Wisconsin cabin to seek his advice. When Ode fails to show, the two teens are forced to fend for themselves there in the woods. Winter sets in, and it becomes apparent that Willie is seriously ill. This is only the beginning of their struggles in a new world of their making, away from abuse and unhappiness. Scott and Willie have already been through so much, but together, they might find peace and a loving family among the Ho Chunk.

This book was released on 2002-05-02 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book grew out of the discussions and presentations that began during the Workshop on Emerging and Reemerging Diseases (May 17-21, 1999) sponsored by the Institute for Mathematics and its Application (IMA) at the University of Minnesota with the support of NIH and NSF. The workshop started with a two-day tutorial session directed at ecologists, epidemiologists, immunologists, mathematicians, and scientists interested in the study of disease dynamics. The core of this first volume, Volume 125, covers tutorial and research contributions on the use of dynamical systems (deterministic discrete, delay, PDEs, and ODEs models) and stochastic models in disease dynamics. The volume includes the study of cancer, HIV, pertussis, and tuberculosis. Beginning graduate students in applied mathematics, scientists in the natural, social, or health sciences or mathematicians who want to enter the fields of mathematical and theoretical epidemiology will find this book useful.
