Book excerpt: "Extraordinary"--THE NEW YORKER In the formally innovative tradition of Grief Is the Thing with Feathers and Ducks, Newburyport comes a dazzlingly original, shot-in-the-arm of a debut that reveals a young woman's every thought over the course of one deceptively ordinary day. She wakes up, goes to work. Watches the clock and checks her phone. But underneath this monotony there's something else going on: something under her skin. Relayed in interweaving columns that chart the feedback loop of memory, the senses, and modern distractions with wit and precision, our narrator becomes increasingly anxious as the day moves on: Is she overusing the heart emoji? Isn't drinking eight glasses of water a day supposed to fix everything? Why is the etiquette of the women's bathroom so fraught? How does she define rape? And why can't she stop scratching? Fiercely moving and slyly profound, little scratch is a defiantly playful look at how our minds function in--and survive--the darkest moments.

Book excerpt: In his hilarious, gritty, and touching debut, Bill Keenan—a hockey star once on the fast-track to the NHL—tells of how he overcame multiple obstacles to find fulfillment and redemption in the strange world of European minor-league professional hockey. Keenan’s hockey obsession begins as a five-year-old on Lasker Rink in New York’s Central Park—“love at first stride,” as he calls it. He then becomes the youngest, and skinniest, player on the New York Bobcats, a Junior B hockey team. Later, after his hockey career at Harvard doesn’t end as planned—with a fat NHL contract—Keenan decides to play in the minor leagues in Europe, where the glamour of professional sports is decidedly lacking. Part fish-out-of-water travelogue, part coming-of-age memoir, Odd Man Rush will capture the interest of not just hockey fans, but also fans of good writing. Throughout, Keenan’s deep affection for the game shines through, even as he describes fans who steal players’ clothes from the locker room or toss empty beer cans onto the rink after games. Abusive fans, cold showers, long bus rides—nothing diminishes his love for the sport. “Because that’s the way it works with me and hockey. Even when it’s horrible, it’s wonderful.” Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Sports Publishing imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in sports—books about baseball, pro football, college football, pro and college basketball, hockey, or soccer, we have a book about your sport or your team. Whether you are a New York Yankees fan or hail from Red Sox nation; whether you are a die-hard Green Bay Packers or Dallas Cowboys fan; whether you root for the Kentucky Wildcats, Louisville Cardinals, UCLA Bruins, or Kansas Jayhawks; whether you route for the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, or Los Angeles Kings; we have a book for you. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to publishing books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked by other publishers and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

This new casebook reveals the secrets of the Winchester Mystery House, the giant Nazca drawings of Peru, the Shroud of Turin, the "Mothman" enigma, the Amityville Horror house, the vicious goatsucking El Chupacabras, and numerous other "unexplainable" paranormal phenomena. Nickell has traveled far and wide to solve cases, which include a weeping icon in Russia, the elusive Bigfoot-like "yowie" in Australia, the reputed power of a headless saint in Spain, and an "alien hybrid" in Germany. He has gone undercover—often in disguise—to reveal the tricks of those who pretend to talk to the dead, accompanied a Cajun guide into a Louisiana swamp in search of a fabled monster, and gained an audience with a voodoo queen. Superstar psychic medium John Edward, pet psychic Sonya Fitzpatrick, evangelist and healer Benny Hinn, and many other well-known figures have found themselves under Nickell's careful scrutiny. The Mystery Chronicles examines more than three dozen intriguing mysteries. Nickell uses a hands-on approach and the scientific method to steer between the extremes of mystery mongering and debunking. His investigative skills have won him both acclaim and controversy during his long career as one of the world's foremost paranormal investigators.

Book excerpt: Young Samuel Johnson and his dachshund, Boswell, are trying to show initiative by trick-or-treating a full three days before Halloween, which is how they come to witness strange goings-on at 666 Crowley Road. The Abernathys don’t mean any harm by their flirtation with the underworld, but when they unknowingly call forth Satan himself, they create a gap in the universe, a gap through which a pair of enormous gates is visible. The gates to Hell. And there are some pretty terrifying beings just itching to get out. . . . Bursting with imagination and impossible to put down, New York Times bestselling author John Connolly’s "wholly original" (People) and "refreshing" (San Francisco Chronicle) novel is about the pull between good and evil, physics and fantasy. It is about a quirky and eccentric boy, who is impossible not to love, and the unlikely cast of characters who give him the strength to stand up to a demonic power.

Book excerpt: Doctor Thomas Monro 1759-1833 Physician, Patron and Painter Introduction Thomas Monro, art collector and doctor to the insane, was a unique figure in London society of the eighteenth anbd early nineteenth centuries. In his professional capacity as head of Bethlem Hospital, Bedlam, the Hospital for the Insane, he was summoned to treat George the Third, during his bouts of madness. His private passion was painting in watercolor, and amongst the artists he befriended and encouraged were J.M.W. Turner and Thomas Girtin. Monro appears to be the missing link in the change of style in watercolors that took place around the beginning of the nineteenth century. Many young men who became leading artists of their day were students at the informal meeting of artists held in his house on Adelphi Terrace, weekly on a Friday evening, from 1974. His house became a studio turning out endless sketches and coloured drawings by young artists, known as 'Monro School Copies'. They copied from drawings by Munro, J.R. Cozens, William ALexander, Henry Edridge and Thomas Hearn: also Monro's neighbour John Henderson had a known contemporary collection of drawings, as had Monro himself, which the students copied from. In addition to Turner and Girtin, John Linnell, John Sell Cotman, Peter de Wint, William Henry Hunt, Joshua Cristall and John Varley, among others, found their way to Monro's evening gatherings. Monro and his friends taught them accusracy in drawing, accompanying them on outdoor sketching trips, teaching them to see from Nature, as well as giving them the enjoyment of the company of other young artists, with an opportunity to share ideas. The as yet acknowledged Monro, played a key role in the development of the styles of these artists. The rise and establishment of watercolor painting, with the standards and ideals which Monro insisted upon, had much to do with the unrivaled position which the English School in Water-Colours had attained by the time of his death, whilst John Ruskin went so far as to say that Thomas Monro was "Turner's true master." So many papers are still held by family memebers, which is why so little correct information had appeared on Thomas Monro to date. With five children surviving him, much has been distributed to their descendants, so it is difficult to get a clear picture. Included in the story is a brief description of Bedlam, od the Bethlem, Hospital. Monro never kept a diary, but his son Edward Thomas (Tom) did, and these diaries and those of his artistic son Henry, and Sally his daughter, have been made available to me. THese form the basis for the book, and are held by a member of the family. Letters and descriptions, many of still in private hands, gave further insight.
