Book Synopsis The Fly Sermon and Other Odes by : A.G. McDougall
Download or read book The Fly Sermon and Other Odes written by A.G. McDougall and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2024-08-16 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over forty years I’ve been writing odes about people, places, and experiences in my life. My career in education has been amazing and at times intense, but I managed to escape to hobbies and interests and always attempted to summarise in the form of an ode. These were all placed in boxes and stored away until now. When I retired from teaching, I opened the boxes and read through the odes. They were almost like a diary of my life so far. I’ve selected 21 odes for this collection. They are about friends, holiday experiences, hobbies and sometimes things that happened in my school life. My favourite is The Fly Sermon. I wrote it 36 years ago for children to recite in their assembly about tolerance for others and non-discrimination. The theme is as important now as it was then. Our life is surrounded with all sorts of living things, which we should respect and learn to live with, regardless of quirks, traits, or physical features. I’ll remember whenever a fly I do see, The importance of living in close harmony.

Book Synopsis The Road to Ambridge by : June Spencer
Download or read book The Road to Ambridge written by June Spencer and published by Aurum Press Limited. This book was released on 2014-08-14 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: June Spencer may well be best known as matriarch Peggy Archer (now Woolley), of one of the UK's best known and longest running soap operas, but aged 90 now, she'd seen and done a lot before (and since) joining the Archers 60 years ago. The only original member of the cast still in The Archers, June has worked in showbusiness since the age of 12, when she wrote and produced her own stage shows for her family. She grew up to become an after-dinner entertainer, finally making her way to radio, starring in classics such as Dick Barton and Children's Hour. Born back when milk was collected in a jug from the local store, June takes us back in time as she affectionately recalls the slower pace of childhood, life during the second world war, a that she hardly knew returning from Burma, and later, his decline due to Alzheimer's and the subsequent identical story line with her fictional husband. June also talks about 60 years of life with the Archers, telling all about characters, classic storylines and her own life, from playing Mary Queen of Scots and bringing up children, to meeting the Queen. Where Peggy is stern and doesn't see the funny side of things, June's endearing story is infused with humour and a joy of life.
Book Synopsis The Ode Less Travelled by : Stephen Fry
Download or read book The Ode Less Travelled written by Stephen Fry and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2006-08-17 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comedian and actor Stephen Fry's witty and practical guide, now in paperback, gives the aspiring poet or student the tools and confidence to write and understand poetry. Stephen Fry believes that if one can speak and read English, one can write poetry. In The Ode Less Travelled, he invites readers to discover the delights of writing poetry for pleasure and provides the tools and confidence to get started. Through enjoyable exercises, witty insights, and simple step-by-step advice, Fry introduces the concepts of Metre, Rhyme, Form, Diction, and Poetics. Most of us have never been taught to read or write poetry, and so it can seem mysterious and intimidating. But Fry, a wonderfully competent, engaging teacher and a writer of poetry himself, sets out to correct this problem by explaining the various elements of poetry in simple terms, without condescension. Fry's method works, and his enthusiasm is contagious as he explores different forms of poetry: the haiku, the ballad, the villanelle, and the sonnet, among many others. Along the way, he introduces us to poets we've heard of but never read. The Ode Less Travelled is not just the survey course you never took in college, it's a lively celebration of poetry that makes even the most reluctant reader want to pick up a pencil and give it a try.
