Book excerpt: "I had a small shack in field next to the alder grove when I lived in Muir Beach. We called it the Goddess Factory. This was my studio where I printed so many of my Goddesses. It became the theme of my major work. People always ask me, "Why do you paint Goddesses?" I used to say, "Because I was born as a woman." Now I know that the time we live in needs much more femininity. In order to know that part of myself, I kept creating; big, small, medium Goddesses. Like the Buddhist bodhisattva images that I created, they reflect what I was experiencing or struggling with at the time in my life, sometimes gentleness, sometimes clarity. I was inspired by all Goddesses from many civilizations, not just Buddhist or Japanese." Mayumi Oda's biography of growing up in Japan and becoming an artist in the United States. This book is written bilingually in Japanese and in English with 33 colored illustrations.

Book excerpt: Oda Sakunosuke (1913-43) is described in Japan as one of the 3hooligan school2 of writers, who worked before and during WW2. Seeking to create an underground literature in opposition to the traditional literature favored by the militaristic government, these writers often depicted unflattering realities rather than exemplary ideals. By deliberately focusing on Japan1s hustlers, bunglers, and misfits, 3Stories of Osaka Life2 skillfully recaptures the essence of the Osaka temperament: its hedonism, wry humor, and lust for life. Among the preeminent works of one of modern Japan1s most admired writers, these stories offer extraordinary characterizations executed with compassion, honesty and humor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiring life story of pioneering feminist artist, activist, and Buddhist teacher Mayumi Oda told through her own words and original thangka paintings. Sitting in meditation in front of a statue of Goddess Sarasvati, Mayumi Oda heard her say in a loud voice, "Stop the plutonium shipment!" After taking a stunned breath, Mayumi replied, "I can't do that. I'm only an artist," and Sarasvati answered, "Help will be provided." This book is the culmination of a life devoted to responding to Sarasvati's call to cultivate a path of peace, justice, and compassion. Known as the "Matisse of Japan," Mayumi Oda is a painter, environmental activist, and Buddhist practitioner whose life reflects both the brilliance and shadows of modernity. Sarasvati's Gift explores her upbringing in Japan, her tumultuous marriage and the death of her son, her immigration to the country responsible for the destruction of her home, her inspiration for both her Buddhist practice and her art, and ultimately her commitment to the planet that gives her life both hope and meaning. This raw, heartfelt, and powerful memoir shares Mayumi's story of finding her place and her mission to transform the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decades following World War II, municipal leaders and ordinary citizens embraced San Francisco’s identity as the “Gateway to the Pacific,” using it to reimagine and rebuild the city. The city became a cosmopolitan center on account of its newfound celebration of its Japanese and other Asian American residents, its economy linked with Asia, and its favorable location for transpacific partnerships. The most conspicuous testament to San Francisco’s postwar transpacific connections is the Japanese Cultural and Trade Center in the city’s redeveloped Japanese-American enclave. Focusing on the development of the Center, Meredith Oda shows how this multilayered story was embedded within a larger story of the changing institutions and ideas that were shaping the city. During these formative decades, Oda argues, San Francisco’s relations with and ideas about Japan were being forged within the intimate, local sites of civic and community life. This shift took many forms, including changes in city leadership, new municipal institutions, and especially transformations in the built environment. Newly friendly relations between Japan and the United States also meant that Japanese Americans found fresh, if highly constrained, job and community prospects just as the city’s African Americans struggled against rising barriers. San Francisco’s story is an inherently local one, but it also a broader story of a city collectively, if not cooperatively, reimagining its place in a global economy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judge Shigeru Oda, having served since 1976 in three successive nine-year terms on the International Court of Justice, has helped to shape the Court's jurisprudence for over a quarter century. His influence on the law of the sea spans an even longer period, beginning with his doctoral dissertation at Yale Law school in the 1950s and continuing with his involvement in the First, Second and Third UN Conferences on the Law of the Sea. In a tribute to Judge Oda's significant contributions to international law, leading scholars on the law of the sea, international dispute settlement and the ICJ itself have produced a Festschrift in his honour that promises to be a standard reference work on these topics for years to come. This two volume work, containing over 95 articles, begins by examining the role of the international judge and the jurisdiction of international tribunals (including reservations to jurisdiction, the Optional Clause, the Special Agreement, and the power to indicate special measures). It contains a particularly lively debate regarding the proliferation of international tribunals and whether the potential for conflicting decisions is problematic or productive. Other areas of focus include the history and current development of the law of the sea; the first in-depth examination of the establishment and first decisions of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea; and the ICJ's treatment of the development, doctrines and sources of international law. Further sections are devoted to International Litigation as analysed by leading practitioners; Land and Maritime Boundaries, International Watercourses and Other Waters; and Defence, the Use of Force and the Law of Armed Conflict. The composition of the editorial team - Nisuke Ando of Kyoto, Edward McWhinney of Ottawa and Rüdiger Wolfrum of Heidelberg - reflects Judge Oda's truly international career and the extent to which his work has drawn from and contributed to diverse legal traditions.

Book excerpt: The present volume inaugurates a new series, The Judges, which collects and synthesizes the opinions of leading international judges of the contemporary era who have contributed significantly to the progressive development of international law. The series is launched with the Judicial Opinions of Shigeru Oda, currently Vice President of the International Court of Justice. The collection of Opinions covers the period from Judge Oda's first election to the International Court in the Autumn of 1975, on to the year 1992. All of the individual Opinions filed by Judge Oda in this period - Separate Opinions, Declarations and Dissenting Opinions - are included, and they are published in full, without editorial cuts. An introductory essay examines the diverse educational and professional influences contributing to Judge Oda's formation as a jurist, from his earliest university years in Japan and in the United States, through his subsequent professional career in universities and government service and at international academic-scientific and diplomatic reunions over the years. The study includes a résumé and analysis of Judge Oda's Judicial Opinions, through the cases, and attempts some identification and synthesis of the main elements in his approach to decision making and opinion writing, as well as the main strands in his judicial philosophy, as demonstrated in the actual case law.

This book was released on 2021-07-23 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three main financial inflows to developing countries have largely increased during the last two decades, despite the large debate in the literature regarding their effects on economic growth which is not yet clear-cut. An emerging literature investigates the dependence of their effects on some country characteristics such as human and physical capital constraint, macroeconomic policy and institutional capacity. This paper extends the literature by arguing that climate shocks may undermine the effect of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), official development assistance (ODA) and migrants’ remittances on economic expansion. Based on neoclassical growth framework, the theoretical model indicates that FDI, ODA, and remittances improve economic growth, and the size of the effect increases with good absorptive capacity. However, climate shocks reduce this positive effect of financial flows in developing countries. Using a sample of low and middle-income countries from 1995 to 2018, the empirical investigation confirms the theoretical conclusions. Developing countries should build strong resilience to climate change. Actions are also needed at global level to reduce greenhouse gases emissions, and build strong structural resilience to climate shocks especially in developing countries.

Japonius Tyrannus fills the gap in our knowledge about Nobunaga, and the chronological narrative providesa thorough analysis of his political and military career.
