Book Synopsis Sovereign Rights and Territorial Space in Sino-Japanese Relations by : Unryu Suganuma

This book was released on 2001-03-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 1996, members of the right-wing Japan Youth Federation repaired a lighthouse on one of the Diaoyu (J. Senkaku) Islands, a small group of uninhabited islets north of Taiwan in the Liuqiu (J. Ryukyu) chain, known today as Okinawa. For months, outraged ethnic Chinese in Hong Kong and Taiwan protested Japan’s presence in the islands, and violent confrontations between protesters and the Japanese Marine Self-Defense Force resulted. Tension over these incidents has subsided since 1996, but the sovereignty of the islands remains a concern for both China and Japan. The long and complex history of relations between the two countries has made the problem difficult to resolve. This volatile situation has been further complicated by the involvement of other countries, including the U.S. Although the Diaoyu/Senkaku matter may be characterized as a simple territorial dispute between two nations, it exposes complicated geopolitical relations among Japan, China, Taiwan, and the U.S. in the Asia-Pacific region. Sovereign Rights and Territorial Space in Sino-Japanese Relations is an investigation of the highly topical issues involved in the Diaoyu/Senkaku confrontation. It begins by addressing the issue of the historical development of the dispute: To whom do the islands belong? When did China and Japan become involved? Does historical evidence prove who has sovereignty over the islands? How has irredentism (the claim to territory based on one or another historical “right”) become a major state policy in both countries? Other issues center on Chinese views of sovereignty and methods of delimiting territorial boundaries during the Ming and Qing periods, the Chinese concept of hegemony, and the history behind the deep mistrust that permeates Sino-Japanese relations. Finally, the author discloses the interwoven relationship between geography and history in East Asia. Chinese and Japanese geographers have for centuries been engaged in historical analyses of the islands. Their work, which has been used in the development of national security and diplomatic policies, is an important resource and one that this book makes available to Western scholars for the first time. In addition to his careful examination of these and other sources, Suganuma utilizes theoretical writings on geographical irredentism to expose the biases of recent work on the Diaoyu/Senkaku dispute. This volume is the fullest scholarly treatment that the contested issue of the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands has received to date in any language. It contains much of interest for historians of modern China and Japan as well as for political scientists looking for new insights into international relations and Sino-Japanese interactions. No one who reads it will look at sovereignty in the same way again.

Book Synopsis Carteret's Voyage Round the World, 1766-1769 by : Helen Wallis
Download or read book Carteret's Voyage Round the World, 1766-1769 written by Helen Wallis and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Captain Philip Carteret sailed to the South Seas as second in command to Samuel Wallis on a voyage of discovery of the Southern Continent. Separating from Wallis at the exit to the Strait of Magellan he went on to make an independent voyage which has earned him the reputation of being the ablest and most ill-fated of Cook's immediate precursors. Handicapped by a defective ship and inadequate supplies he made a spirited attempt to carry out his instructions. While Wallis was enjoying the delights of Tahiti, Carteret on a more southerly track rediscovered the long lost Spanish discoveries of Santa Cruz and the Solomon Islands, and then became involved in a bitter dispute with the Dutch in Celebes which almost ended in open warfare. This edition presents the first full account of the voyage. It is based on Carteret's own manuscript Journals including one which Carteret wrote with a view to publication to correct the misrepresentation of John Hawkesworth's Voyages (1773). Supplemented by letters and other documents from English and Dutch archives, these manuscripts throw light on various controversial topics, such as the conduct of Wallis and the Admiralty, the Patagonian giants, Carteret's quarrel with the Dutch, and the rights and wrongs in the dispute following the publication of Voyages. Maps drawn on the voyage are reproduced. The main pagination of this and the following volume (Second Series 125) is continuous. This is a new print-on-demand hardback edition of the volume first published in 1965.

Book Synopsis One More Good Flight by : Richard E Gillespie
Download or read book One More Good Flight written by Richard E Gillespie and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2024-09-17 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortly before embarking on her attempt to circumnavigate the globe, Amelia Earhart confided to a friend, “I have a feeling there is just about one more good flight left in my system and I hope this trip around the world is it.” This book is the product of The Earhart Project, a thirty-four-year investigation of the Earhart tragedy by The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery. TIGHAR investigators had no agenda. They were not out to advocate, excuse, honor, or impugn. They saw the Earhart disappearance as an aviation accident and reasoned the answer to its cause and outcome should be discoverable if they could find, assemble, and analyze the relevant data. To understand why she died it was necessary to strip away the myths and sentimentality that have grown up over the years and examine the hard truths behind how Earhart's trip around the world came about and why it went so terribly wrong. The U.S. Navy and Coast Guard were major players in the 1937 flight, disappearance, and search for Amelia Earhart, and in the aftermath. The story of the pressures and frustrations the services faced and the mistakes they made contain valuable lessons for today's commanders. Gillespie's first book, Finding Amelia – The True Story of the Earhart Disappearance (Naval Institute Press, 2006) chronicled what was known at that time. This new book updates the story with important new information from historical documents discovered since then and also provides extensive prequel and sequel narratives that complete the saga and give new perspective to the life and death of an American icon.
