Book excerpt: The papers which follow were presented at an International Sym posium held in Lisbon from 8-11 July 1985 on the Hydrodynamics of Ocean Wave-Energy Utilization and sponsored by the Interna tional Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. The subject of the Symposium embraced wave statistics, numerical methods, theoretical, experimental and field studies of wave energy devices. The idea of extracting useful energy from ocean waves continues to attract the curiosity of scientists and engineers in many parts of the world as the following papers indicate. Increasing ly the trend is towards smaller devices suitable for use near remote island communities where wave power, as an alternative to costly diesel fuel for electric generators, is already very competitive in economic terms. The decision to build two different prototype wave-power devices into the cliffs off Bergen in Norway has provided a welcome impetus to the field, stimulating a large amount of theoretical work on oscillating water column-type devices. In particular phase control methods - in which force and velocity of a rigid body, or pressure and volume flux across a turbine are matched in phase to achieve maximum power output - rightfully occupy a central place in the papers that follow. In addition to the established workers in the field, a new ge neration of wave-energy enthusiasts is emerging, learning from the mistakes of others and contributing exciting ideas of both a conceptual and practical nature.

Book excerpt: Advanced Simulation of Alternative Energy: Simulations with Simulink® and SimPowerSystemsTM considers models of new and promising installations of renewable energy sources, as well as the new trends in this technical field. The book is focused on wind generators with multiphase generators, models of different offshore parks, wind shear and tower shadow effect, active damping, system inertia support, synchronverter modeling, photovoltaic cells with cascaded H-Bridge multilevel inverters, operation of fuel cells with electrolyzers and microturbines, utilization of ocean wave and ocean tide energy sources, pumped storage hydropower simulation, and simulation of some hybrid systems. Simulink® and its toolbox, SimPowerSystemsTM (its new name Electrical/Specialized Power Systems), are the most popular means for simulation of these systems. More than 100 models of the renewable energy systems that are made with use of this program environment are appended to the book. The aims of these models are to aid students studying various electrical engineering fields including industrial electronics, electrical machines, electrical drives, and production and distribution of electrical energy; to facilitate the understanding of various renewable energy system functions; and to create a platform for the development of systems by readers in their fields. This book can be used by engineers and investigators as well as undergraduate and graduate students to develop new electrical systems and investigate the existing ones.

Book excerpt: The coastal zone has always been an important frontier - for trade, food and the foundations of modern civilization. This same zone has also been exploited in one way or another, and sometimes without regard to the balance and schemes of Mother Nature. It is only when things go terribly wrong that we begin to react and attempt to undo the mistakes of the past. At times we have succeeded, but at a high price. At times, we have to retreat and concede defeat as the technology of man is no match to the force of nature. Over time, we learn to work with nature and leverage the science of nature to protect the coastal zone and hold our frontier between the sea and land. This proceeding presents the recent advances in all aspects of ocean and coastal research and management in the Asian and Pacific nations. The volume set provides a valuable source of information for scientists, engineers and professionals dealing with coastal zone issues and challenges in coastal, port and ocean engineering development, as well as the environmental impacts resulting from development of ocean and coastal areas.

Book excerpt: Wave energy has a higher potential than most of the available ocean energy resources; however, it fluctuates dramatically depending on geographical and temporal baselines. The complexity of wave energy is only exacerbated by that fact that the cycle of creation, transport, and disappearance of wave energy is influenced by a wide variety of factors. This Special Issue of Energies explores the latest developments in wave energy potential, behavior, and extraction. This Special Issue introduces 1) thorough reviews on the status of wave energy development, 2) novel technologies to extract wave energy including wave energy converter design, and 3) latest methodologies applied in analyzing wave energy potentials.
