Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ocean Transportation, Vol. 4 It has been the endeavor of the author to con vey as much practical information as possible within the compass of the limited pages at his dis posal. His chief concern has been not to give a vast amount of information, however interesting It might be, but to Show exactly how ocean freight should be prepared for shipment and how it is handled from start to finish. In other words, ' we shall endeavor to teach the steps, the methods, the means, and the practices essential in transport ing goods into and out of our country Via ocean carriers. The authority for many of the statements in the text, concerning export methods, is the book Practical Exporting, by B. Olney Hough, whose very interesting Reading Assignment, entitled Romance in Overseas Trading, accompanies this text. The student should supply himself with Mr. Hough's book and read it carefully. It has been selected as a reference book to further clarify the subjects presented in this text, because of its very complete and admirable treatment of the sub ject of Exporting in all of its phases. Valuable information and interesting data may be obtained also from two other books; namely. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States of America, Vol. 4 of 5: A Pictorial History of the American Nation From the Earliest Discoveries and Settlements to the Present Time That portion of the history of the United States which has developed since 1870 may be properly termed the commercial period. Prior to that date the people were occupied in exploration and discovery, the establishment of permanent homes, methods of government, and the great questions that precipitated the struggle between sections, known as the Civil War. With the termination of that struggle the people of the common Union began to realize the great commercial possibilities of their country - a country whose area, including Alaska, added in 1867, was practically.equal to that of all Europe. When the Civil War began in 1861, comparatively little was known about the great section lying west of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. A few railroads had stretched as far west as the Mississippi River, and a small number of enterprising lines had found their way across that stream and were feeling their way into the then thinly populated section west of the Mississippi. The railroads of the United States in i 860 aggregated but 30,000 miles in length, or about one-seventh as much as to-day, and the cost of transporting a bushel of wheat from Chicago to New York was about five times as great as at the present time. As a consequence, millions of acres of fine agricultural lands in the interior were unoccupied, or utilized only for grazing purposes. The importance of the development of these great interior sections and of a connection of the western with the eastern coast had been realized during the years of the Civil War, and as a result of legislation begun in 1863 and consummated in 1864, the Union and Central Pacific railroads were begun and the work completed in 1869, thus giving to the country in that year a single transcontinental line. Other lines in the interior, which soon followed, gave opportunity for the gradual development of the producing power of that great section of the country which had been practically unoccupied and a part of which had been formerly designated as "The Great American Desert." Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the economics of the business of maritime transport. It provides an economic explanation of four aspects of maritime transport, namely, the demand, the supply, the market and the strategy. The book first explains why seaborne trade happens and what its development trends are; it then analyses the main features of shipping supply and how various shipping markets function; the book finally addresses the critical strategic issues of the shipping business. The full range of different types of shipping are covered throughout the chapters and cases. The book combines the basic principles of maritime transport with the modern shipping business and the latest technological developments, particularly in the area of digital disruption. The ideas and explanations are supported and evidenced by practical examples and more than 160 tables and figures. The questions posed by the book are similar to those that would be asked by the students in their learning process or the professionals in the business environment, with the answers concentrating on the reasons for what has happened and will happen in the future rather than merely fact-telling or any specific forecast. The book is most suited for students of shipping-related disciplines, and is also a valuable reference for maritime professionals.
