Book excerpt: This report describes the Satellite Vertical Line Array 32 channel system (SVLA-32) developed at the Naval Research Laboratory for use during open ocean acoustic signal processing investigations for remote data collection and system control. This system was used during the TTCP Environmental Signal Processing Experiment (TESPEX) exercises in the summer of 1994, and demonstrated its ability to provide real time collection of acoustic data over 32 channels, to perform onsite data formatting and the satellite transfer of that data to shore, and to allow full system command and control via the same satellite link. The system can be divided into the following subsystems: (1) the in water subsystem: a hydrophone array, data acquisition unit, and umbilical cable, (2) the signal processing and recording subsystem, responsible for data formatting, storage to recording devices, and data dissemination, (3) the satellite communication subsystem, responsible for data telemetry and for remote control of the ocean buoy from the shore data processing center, and (4) the buoy subsystem, which includes a primary power generator and a buoy weather station. Capabilities of the current system are described as well as lessons learned during the TESPEX II program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interim report covers the progress of the acoustic telemetry project during the period 12/1/88 to 5/15/89. In general, the work followed the format specified in WHOI proposal No. 5674.1. The major exception was the deletion of the transmitter array development task and a corresponding funding decrease from $242,242 to $170,000. In addition, the period for the funding was extended to June 30, partly due to a two month delay in project startup. The telemetry project was centered around the construction, programming and testing of a digital receiver prototype capable of supporting future signal processing algorithms in real-time over ocean acoustic channels. The baseline receiver consists of a two-channel analog quadrature demodulator, and interface to a multiprocessor receiver for digital signal processing. The software developed includes routines for command and control of the analog demodulator, data handling and formatting, and minimal software to digitally implement an incoherent MFSK demodulator, synchronizer and data decoder. Data storage and display programs were also completed to facilitate the performance analysis of the unit during testing. The system was tested in Woods Hole harbor at data rates up to 4800 bits/sec. The acoustic channel was time-dispersive Rayleigh fading, and performance close to theoretical expectations was achieved. We are confident that the system error behavior is arising from channel-caused effects and known deficiencies in system performance, such as excessive synchronizer steady-state jitter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continents of our planet have already been exploited to a great extent. Therefore man is turning his sight to the vast spaciousness of the ocean whose resources - mineral, biological, energetic, and others - are just beginning to be used. The ocean is being intensively studied. Our notions about the dynam ics of ocean waters and their role in forming the Earth's climate as well as about the structure of the ocean bottom have substantially changed during the last two decades. An outstanding part in this accelerated exploration of the ocean is played by ocean acoustics. Only sound waves can propagate in water over large distances. Practically all kinds of telemetry, communication, location, and re mote sensing of water masses and the ocean bottom use sound waves. Propa gating over thousands of kilometers in the ocean, they bring information on earthquakes, eruptions of volcanoes, and distant storms. Projects using acoustical tomography systems for exploration of the ocean are presently be ing developed. Each of these systems will allow us to determine the three-di mensional structure of water masses in regions as large as millions of square kilometers.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to develop and demonstrate a low cost, easy to operate system for collecting and disseminating coastal ocean data. The system that was developed uses acoustic modems to transfer data from instruments on the seafloor to small surface buoys or existing navigation buoys that are equipped with acoustic receivers and RF links. Data received by the buoy's acoustic receiver are forwarded via the RF link to a station on shore. The shore station transfers the received data via landline to WHOl where it is automatically placed on a project website that is accessible to all. Key elements in this system include: 1) low cost acoustic transmitters that are deployed with each instrument, 2) small, easy to deploy surface buoys that carry the acoustic receivers and RF links, 3) a network architecture that allows a single surface buoy to receive data from a number of subsurface instruments, and 4) a back channel to the surface buoys from the laboratory at WHOl so that the acoustic receivers can be modified without requiring a visit to the site.

Book excerpt: This book contains the papers that were accepted for presentation at the 1988 NATO Advanced Study Institute on Underwater Acoustic Data Processing, held at the Royal Military College of Canada from 18 to 29 July, 1988. Approximately 110 participants from various NATO countries were in attendance during this two week period. Their research interests range from underwater acoustics to signal processing and computer science; some are renowned scientists and some are recent Ph.D. graduates. The purpose of the ASI was to provide an authoritative summing up of the various research activities related to sonar technology. The exposition on each subject began with one or two tutorials prepared by invited lecturers, followed by research papers which provided indications of the state of development in that specific area. I have broadly classified the papers into three sections under the titles of I. Propagation and Noise, II. Signal Processing and III. Post Processing. The reader will find in Section I papers on low frequency acoustic sources and effects of the medium on underwater acoustic propagation. Problems such as coherence loss due to boundary interaction, wavefront distortion and multipath transmission were addressed. Besides the medium, corrupting noise sources also have a strong influence on the performance of a sonar system and several researchers described methods of modeling these sources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of ocean tomography is to measure the (time- varying) speed of sound c(x, y, z;t) and ocean currents u(x, y, z;t) in three dimensions. The oceanographers can further transform these, with other information, into three-dimensional temperature and heat-flux fields. The method of Ocean Acoustic Tomography is to send acoustic timing signals, from each of a number of transmitters to a number of receivers these being spaced perhaps 250 km to 1250 km apart. At such range the sound from any specified transmitter to any specified receiver will travel over several distinctly different identified raypaths, perhaps 5 to 25. As the ocean propagation conditions change, the pattern of changes in the travel times along all the identified raypaths from all transmitters to all receivers can be mathematically 'inverted' to estimate the three dimensional sound speed c(x, y, z;t).

Book excerpt: Coastal Acoustic Tomography begins with the specifics required for designing a Coastal Acoustic Tomography (CAT) experiment and operating the CAT system in coastal seas. Following sections discuss the procedure for data analyses and various application examples of CAT to coastal/shallow seas (obtained in various locations). These sections are broken down into four kinds of methods: horizontal-slice inversion, vertical-slice inversion, modal expansion method and data assimilation. This book emphasizes how dynamic phenomena occurring in coastal/shallow seas can be analyzed using the standard method of inversion and data assimilation. The book is relevant for physical oceanographers, ocean environmentalists and ocean dynamists, focusing on the event being observed rather than the intrinsic details of observational processes. Application examples of successful dynamic phenomena measured by coastal acoustic tomography are also included. Provides the information needed for researchers and graduate students in physical oceanography, ocean-fluid dynamics and ocean environments to apply Ocean Acoustic Tomography (OAT) to their own fields Presents the benefits of using acoustic tomography, including less disturbance to aquatic environments vs. other monitoring methods Includes the assimilation of CAT data into a coastal sea circulation model, a powerful tool to predict coastal-sea environmental changes
