Book Synopsis Worker Safety Under Siege by : Vernon Mogensen
Download or read book Worker Safety Under Siege written by Vernon Mogensen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This eye-opening book shows how the rights of workers to safe and healthful workplaces are under greater attack today than at any time since the passage of the landmark Occupational Safety and Health Act in 1970. This collection is organized around three thematic issues that pose significant challenges to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's ability to protect workers' safety and health. First, the economy has shifted from an industrial base to a white collar/service base, which includes more women workers than ever before - yet many of the safety and health problems that affect women are not being adequately addressed. Second, free market ideology and globalization have served to undermine worker safety and health laws. And finally, the effects of 9/11 have exacerbated the trend toward weakening workers' rights and safety standards in the name of national security.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last fifty years the nature of work and work injury has changed dramatically. Since the 1980s, workers' compensation claims have grown steadily and insurance institutions are feeling the crunch. In Injury and the New World of Work, Terrence Sullivan emphasizes the precarious line between the expansion of needs-based justice and the preservation of work-based prosperity. The contributors to the book examine a broad range of research solutions and policy options for dealing with the critical state of workers' compensation. The essays draw on recent case studies and original empirical work from Canada, situating the book within a comparative international frame of reference.
Book Synopsis Health and Safety in Canadian Workplaces by : Jason Foster
Download or read book Health and Safety in Canadian Workplaces written by Jason Foster and published by . This book was released on 2016-07-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides workers and students with an introduction to effective injury prevention. It pays particular attention to how issues of precarious employment, gender, and ill-health can be better handled in Canadian occupational health and safety (OHS). Health and Safety in Canadian Workplaces offers an extensive overview of central OHS concepts and practices and provides practical suggestions for health and safety advocacy. It attempts to bring OHS into a twenty-first century context by discussing contemporary workplaces and the health effects of new work processes and structures while recognizing that safety has gendered and racialized dimensions. Foster and Barnetson contend that the practice of occupational health and safety can only be understood if we acknowledge that workers and employers have conflicting interests.

Download or read book Pain and Prejudice written by Karen Messing and published by Between the Lines. This book was released on 2014-09-02 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1978, when workers at a nearby phosphate refinery learned that the ore they processed was contaminated with radioactive dust, Karen Messing, then a new professor of molecular genetics, was called in to help. Unsure of what to do with her discovery that exposure to the radiation was harming the workers and their families, Messing contacted senior colleagues but they wouldn’t help. Neither the refinery company nor the scientific community was interested in the scary results of her chromosome studies. Over the next decades Messing encountered many more cases of workers around the world, factory workers, cleaners, checkout clerks, bank tellers, food servers, nurses, teachers, suffering and in pain without any help from the very scientists and occupational health experts whose work was supposed to make their lives easier. Arguing that rules for scientific practice can make it hard to see what really makes workers sick, in Pain and Prejudice Messing tells the story of how she went from looking at test tubes to listening to workers.
