Book excerpt: An analysis of the alchemy of the soul through the night of senses through the application of practical kabbalah, hermetic philosophy and enochian magic through a comparative study of the self in Saint John of the Cross' DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL and Kenneth Grant's NIGHTSIDE OF EDEN ABOUT THIS SERIES"Yoga of the West" is an old name scholars gave to Kabbalah and western forms of mysticism as a general classification among certain schools. Given the popularity of such forms of spirituality today it makes sense for a series like this to emphasize the uniformity and universal value of differing cultural spiritual modalities, including religious vogues as seen in the endless vicissitudes of mainstream churches and religions. Many in the west seek mystical release, ecstatic practical spirituality without abandoning their familiar western culture. Esotericism and the western mystery tradition has suffered arguably more liminality than many eastern schools. Whilst alchemy developed in Arabic culture however, and Kabbalah in the Hebrew, Christianity throughout much of its existence has struggled with its own mystical core. This series then brings back to the light from the darkness the esoteric magic, paganism & alchemy of the western mystery tradition for anyone called to this difficult path of human transformation. - #777 Frater R∴C∴, 2018

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE Book of the Sacred Magic of Abra-melin the Mage-originally published in 1900, translated by Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers' from a 15th-century French document was purportedly written by Abraham for his son Lamech. Within this volume are three books. The first book is Abraham's autobiography in which he speaks to his son. The second book Is an explanation of the purification rituals necessary to bring the magician's personal demon under his control. And the third book details what feats can be accomplished once the practitioner is able to use a form of magic controlled and directed through sigils of magic words written on a grid. Anyone with an interest in the occult will find this an interesting, though perhaps impractical, guide for exploring mystic arts. This is a must have in any collection of occult literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is in two parts: in the first one, called "The Doctrine of Transcendental Magic", we establish the kabalistic and magical doctrine in its entirety; this here, the second part, is consecrated to the cultus, that is, to Ceremonial Magic. The one is that which the ancient sages termed the Clavicle, the other that which people on the country-side still call the Grimoire. The numbers and subjects of the chapters which correspond in both parts, are in no sense arbitrary, and are all indicated in the great universal key, of which we give for the first time a complete and adequate explanation. Let this work now go its way where it will and become what Providence determines; it is finished, and we believe it to be enduring, because it is strong, like all that is reasonable and conscientious.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born Alphonse Louis Constant, French magician Éliphas Lévi (1810-75) wrote prolifically on the occult sciences. His Histoire de la magie was first published in 1860. In it, Lévi recounts the history of the occult in Western thought, encompassing its biblical, Zoroastrian and ancient Greek origins, various magical practices of the medieval and early modern periods - including hermeticism, alchemy and necromancy - and the role of magic in the French Revolution. The last section of the book describes nineteenth-century magical practices and includes details of Lévi's own occult experiences. Prepared by Arthur Edward Waite (1857-1942), this English translation was first published in 1913. An editor and translator of numerous magical texts, Waite includes here a preface comprising an eloquent defense of Lévi and intellectual magic. The original French edition is also reissued in the Cambridge Library Collection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The particular scheme or system of Magic advocated in the present work is to an extent "sui generis," but to an extent only. It is rather the manner of its application which makes it unique. In Magic, that is to say, the Science of the Control of the Secret Forces of Nature, there have always been two great schools, the one great in Good, the other in Evil the former the Magic of Light, the latter that of Darkness the former usually depending on the knowledge and invocation of the Angelic natures, the latter on the method of evocation of the Demonic races. Usually the former is termed White Magic, as opposed to the latter, or Black Magic. The invocation of Angelic Forces, then, is an idea common in works of Magic, as also are the Ceremonies of Pact with and submission to the Evil Spirits. The system, however, taught in the present work is based on the following conception: () That the Good Spirits and Angelic Powers of Light are superior in Power to the Fallen Spirits of Darkness. () That these latter as a punishment have been condemned to the service of the Initiates of the Magic of Light. (This Idea is to be found also in the Kôran; or, as it is frequently and perhaps more correctly written, "Qûr-an".) () As a consequence of this doctrine, all ordinary material effects and phenomena are produced by the labour of the Evil Spirits under the command usually of the Good. () That consequently whenever the Evil Demons can escape from the control of the Good, there is no evil that they will not work by way of vengeance. () That therefore sooner than obey man, they will try to make him their servant, by inducing him to conclude Pacts and Agreements with them. () That to further this project, they will use every means that offers to obsess him. () That in order to become an Adept, therefore, and dominate them; the greatest possible firmness of will, purity of soul and intent, and power of self-control is necessary. () That this is only to be attained by self-abnegation on every plane. () That man, therefore, is the middle nature, and natural controller of the middle nature between the Angels and the Demons, and that therefore to each man is attached naturally both a Guardian Angel and a Malevolent Demon, and also certain Spirits that may become Familiars, so that with him it rests to give the victory unto the which he will. () That, therefore, in order to control and make service of the Lower and Evil, the knowledge of the Higher and Good is requisite

This book is an attempt to synthesize the procedures of all of the famous Grimoires. It draws on the Key of Solomon, the Grimorium Verum, the apocryphal Fourth Book of Cornelius Agrippa, and many others, including the famous Black Pullet, or Poulet Noir. While Waite is careful in his analysis of the various Grimoires, he treats the subject matter skeptically. The result is an unparalleled look at the details of ceremonial magic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rare combination of personal and academic, this book showcases the myriad avenues for transcending the boundaries of reality through direct sensory experience. The Varieties of Magical Experience: Indigenous, Medieval, and Modern Magic provides a comprehensive volume that examines magic in all its aspects. Through detailed case studies, verbatim accounts of personal experiences, and first-hand experience from the authors' own active participation in many alternative religious rituals and ceremonies, this unique book reveals how magic can be a universal phenomenon that crosses cultural, historical, and spatial boundaries. The work is organized in five sections that embrace several broad themes: indigenous magical and shamanic practices; medieval witchcraft; sorcery and hermetic magic; and contemporary Western magical practices, including the role of sexuality, trance, and meditation. The introductory section explores the idea of magic, other realities, and the employment of all the senses, while the final section discusses contemporary issues of ecology and cybermagic. The authors give voice to the powerful emotions and feelings that result from a magical encounter, providing engaging and accessible information to general readers, while those well versed in the opaque world of magic and occultism, consciousness studies, and imaginal and disembodied realms will appreciate the book's content at a deeper level.
