Book excerpt: The Formative Period marked a period of rapid social change and population growth in the Central Highlands of Mexico, culminating in the emergence of the Teotihuacan state in the Terminal Formative. This dissertation explores several aspects of economic life among the people who occupied the Teotihuacan Valley prior to the development of the state, focusing on the Early and Middle Formative Periods (ca. 1500 -- 500 B.C.) as seen from Altica (1200 -- 850 B.C.), the earliest known site in the Teotihuacan Valley. Early Formative populations in the Teotihuacan Valley, and northern Basin of Mexico more broadly, were sparse during this period, likely because it is cool, arid climate was less agriculturally hospitable than the southern basin. Altica was located in an especially agriculturally marginal section of the Teotihuacan Valley's piedmont. While this location is suboptimal for subsistence agriculturalists, Altica's proximity to the economically important Otumba obsidian source suggests that other economic factors influenced settlement choice. The studies presented here examine both Altica's role in networks of obsidian exchange and its agricultural suitability. Chapter 1 introduces the cultural context of the studies, addressing the major cultural and political developments of the Formative Period in Mesoamerica. Chapter 2 uses a combination of technological and geochemical data from obsidian assemblages at nine Formative sites in the Basin of Mexico, including Altica, to identify collections consistent with specialized obsidian processing or tool production. Two sites stood out. Coapexco, located in a constrained inlet to the Basin of Mexico, may have been a gateway site where obsidian and other goods from distant sources could be pooled before distribution to sites within the Basin. Altica showed no signs of having been involved in specialized tool production but may have been a locus for the storage or reduction of obsidian nodules from Otumba on their way to more distant consumer sites. Chapter 3 takes a wider view of obsidian exchange, using networks to visualize the role of obsidian from different Mesoamerican sources, namely Otumba, in exchange across Formative Mesoamerica. Otumba occupied a central role in Mesoamerican obsidian exchange, especially early in the Formative Period. Chapter 4 uses modern agronomic modeling to simulate the potential impacts of Formative farming practices on long-term agricultural suitability. The model's results suggest that soil depletion, namely soil nutrient loss and erosion, would have rendered the land surrounding Altica unproductive within just a few decades without long fallow periods or considerable investment in slope and soil management. Chapter 5 summarizes the findings of this dissertation and discusses potential lines of fruitful future inquiry.

Book excerpt: Archaeological study detailing the excavation and analysis of obsidian workshop deposits located next to the Moon Pyramid at the ancient city of Teotihuacan, Mexico. The study suggests that greater insights into past cases of craft production are obtained by coupling technologically informed analyses with detailed consideration of the social, symbolic, and ideational dimensions within which production activities were embedded. Aspects of material culture associated with warfare and ritualized violence appear to have frequently formed part of the strategies of early state governance, serving to publicize political authority in a tangible form. Book excerpt: This thesis details the trade and exchange of Pachuca obsidian in the Basin of Mexico, focusing on the Teotihuacan Valley region, during the Classic Period by incorporating two intraregional models for Teotihuacan economy of Pachuca obsidian with both its urban and rural areas. The Tlajinga district is the focus of the urban area and the Teotihuacan Valley for the rural area, looking at the trade and exchange pattern between these two different areas and the interactions they had with Teotihuacan. Looking at Pachuca prismatic blades and obsidian cores emphasizes the importance of this obsidian in this region in its economic and symbolic value. The symbolic value comes from the obsidian blades imagery that are found in Teotihuacan that show obsidian as more than a utilitarian tool.

Book excerpt: Long-distance trade of obsidian in the Maya realm has been documented as early as the Middle Formative Period (1000-400 BC). Obsidian exchange continued in each succeeding period, through the Post-Classic (AD 900-1525), varying in both intensity and source of origin. It is the temporal variations in source utilisation that have formed the basis for obsidian research in the Maya area. By focusing on the origin of the obsidian and the temporal context these studies provide valuable information in documenting shifts in source utilisation. This work focuses on the distribution and consumption of obsidian on an intra-site scale with an intent to determine if variation in source utilisation can be attributed directly or indirectly to contextual variations. For the purposes of this study three types of context were identified, functional, archaeological and social. Information regarding obsidian consumption was compiled from ten sites and two survey areas spanning four geographic regions across Northern Belize and North-eastern Peten.

Book excerpt: Regional approaches to the study of prehistoric exchange have generated much new knowledge about intergroup and regional interaction. The American South west and Mesoamerica: Systems of Prehistoric Exchange is the first of two volumes that seek to provide current information regarding regional exchange on a conti nental basis. From a theoretical perspective, these volumes provide important data for the comparative analysis of regional systems relative to sociopolitical organization from simple hunter-gatherers to those of complex sociopolitical entities like the state. Although individual regional exchange systems are unique for each region and time period, general patterns emerge relative to sOciopolitical organization. Of significant interest to us are the dynamic processes of change, stability, rate of growth, and collapse of regional exchange systems relative to sociopolitical complexity. These volumes provide basic data to further our under standing of prehistoric exchange systems. The volume presents our current state of knowledge about regional exchange systems in the American Southwest and Mesoamerica. Each chapter synthesizes the research findings of a number of other researchers in order to provide a synchronic view of regional interaction for a specific chronological period. A diachronic view is also prOvided for regional interaction in the context of the developments in regional SOciopolitical organization. Most authors go beyond description by proposing alternative models within which to understand regional interaction. The book is organized by geographical and chronological divisions to pro vide units of the broader mosaic of prehistoric exchange systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the 28th International Archaeometry Symposium jointly sponsored by the University of California, Los Angeles, and the Getty Conservation Institute, this volume offers a rare opportunity to survey under a single cover a wide range of investigations concerning pre-Columbian materials. Twenty chapters detail research in five principal areas: anthropology and materials science; ceramics; stone and obsidian; metals; and archaeological sites and dating. Contributions include Heather Lechtman's investigation of “The Materials Science of Material Culture,” Ron L. Bishop on the compositional analysis of pre-Columbian pottery from the Maya region, Ellen Howe on the use of silver and lead from the Mantaro Valley in Peru, and J. Michael Elam and others on source identification and hydration dating of obsidian artifacts.
