Book Synopsis Early Periodical Indexes by : Robert Balay
Download or read book Early Periodical Indexes written by Robert Balay and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Balay's "Early Periodical Indexes" is the most comprehensive guide available to the indexing of periodical literature from the 16th century until the end of the 19th century, limited in scope to European languages. The material itself is widely scattered, difficult to find, and until now without a systematic way to identify it. This extraordinarily useful tool lists and describes titles in a wide range of disciplines, including indexes published prior to 1900 that are restricted to periodicals (such as Poole's), those published later (such as Wellesley), as well as serial and topical bibliographies citing publications in all formats--and Balay explains the relationships among them. Electronic databases, both Web-based and CD-ROMs, are included. Indexes are by author, title, topical subjects, and dates of coverage. This landmark resource should be a familiar sight in every research library.

Book Synopsis Mauna Loa Revealed by : J. M. Rhodes
Download or read book Mauna Loa Revealed written by J. M. Rhodes and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1995-01-09 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 92. Mauna Loa is a volcano of superlatives: it is the largest active volcano on Earth and among the most productive. This volume serves to place on record the current state of our knowledge concerning Mauna Loa at the beginning of the Decade Volcano Project. The scope is broad, encompassing the geologic and exploratory history of the volcano, an overview of its submarine geology, its structure, petrologic and geochemical characteristics, and what Mauna Loa has to tell us about the Hawaiian mantle plume; it covers also remote sensing methods and the use of gravity, seismic and deformational studies for eruption monitoring and forecasting, hazards associated with the volcano, and even the importance of a changing volcanic landscape with a wide spectrum of climate zones as an ecological laboratory. We have made a deliberate effort to present a comprehensive spectrum of current Mauna Loa research by building on a December 1993 symposium at the AGU Fall Meeting that considered (1) what is currently known about Mauna Loa, (2) critical problems that need to be addressed, and (3) the technical means to solve these problems, and by soliciting contributions that were not part of the symposium. We encouraged authors to consider how their papers relate to others in the volume through crossreferencing. The intent was that this monograph should be a book about Mauna Loa rather than a collection of disparate papers.
Book Synopsis Historical Dictionary of Honolulu and Hawaiʻi by : Robert D. Craig
Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Honolulu and Hawaiʻi written by Robert D. Craig and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Historical Dictionary of Honolulu and Hawai'i is a valuable historical reference to the U.S. island and its capital city. The volume includes a broad range of information with equal weight given to the historical development and to the current situation of the island state. The book begins with two maps (of the entire state and the island of O'ahu), acronyms and pronunciation guides, and a chronology of major events on the islands from its earliest settlements in approximately 700 A.D. to the present day. The chronology is especially detailed for the years of 1990 to 1997. A 40-page introduction provides a narrative history of the island, with special attention to Honolulu. It includes four historical drawings/photographs of Honolulu from the years 1816, 1854, 1920, and 1997, as well as photographs of important historical landmarks and geographic locations. The dictionary portion comprises over 250 entries on historical persons, events, landmarks, organizations, ethnic groups, tourist-related data, economy, religion and education, among the many other topics. Cross-references are included to direct the reader to other useful entries. An extensive bibliography provides other resources for expanded reading on Hawai'i and Honolulu. Various appendixes provide ready reference information for the reader, including population figures from 1779 through 1997, the ethnic make-up of Hawai'i in 1990, budget figures for the state, as well as detailed lists of Hawai'i's unique holidays and celebrations. Most importantly, the inclusion of a large volume of contemporary information distinguishes this book from other historical references to the islands of Hawai'i.
