Book excerpt: A search for the standard model (SM) Higgs boson which decays to a pair of [tau] leptons is presented in this thesis using 35.9 f b−1 of 13 TeV data collected in 2016 by the CMS detector at CERN. The final states considered require that (1) one [tau] lepton decays leptonically while the other decays hadronically ([mu][tau]h or e[tau]h), (2) both taus decay hadronically ([tau]h[tau]h) or (3) one tau lepton decays to an electron while the other decays to a muon (e[mu]). This thesis specifically focuses on the details of the semi-hadronic decay channels ([mu][tau]h and e[tau]h), and presents the results of all channels combined. The signal strength, [mu], relative to the expectation for the SM Higgs boson is measured to be [mu] = 1.09+0.27−0.24. An excess is observed (expected) corresponding to 4.9 (4.7) [sigma] using 2016 data. The observed (expected) significance reaches 5.9 (5.9) [sigma] when combined with 7 and 8 TeV data collected at CMS. Subsequently following the SM search, a search for dark matter (DM) is presented and interpreted in two simplified Higgs-portal models: a baryonic dark matter model and a two Higgs-doublet model. In this thesis, the Higgs boson is required to decay to an opposite- sign tau pair. The tau pair final states considered are e[tau]h, [mu][tau]h, and [tau]h[tau]h. The expected 95% confidence level upper limits are produced and compared with the observed limit. No significant deviations beyond the SM prediction are observed.

Book excerpt: The study presented in this dissertation is a search for dark matter produced in 13 TeV proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) using 35.9 fb−1 of data collected in 2016 with the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector. Dark matter escapes the detector without interacting, resulting in a large imbalance of transverse momentum, which can be observed when a Higgs boson is tagged in the opposite direction. A variety of models which motivate a dark matter and Higgs interaction are discussed. The experimental signature of these models is called mono-Higgs. In this search, the Higgs is produced primarily from gluon fusion and decays to four leptons via two Z bosons (H → ZZ → 4l). In addition to observing the Higgs in the four-lepton final state, an extensive study of missing transverse energy (MET) is required to search for the mono-Higgs signature. A background model is developed for the Standard Model processes that result in the same final state as the signal, then a counting experiment is performed in an optimized signal region. There is no evidence for an excess of events in the signal region above the backgrounds, so cross section limits are set for two kinematically distinct signal models.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents a 5.5 standard deviation observation of the Higgs boson decaying to fermions using the data collected at the LHC at 13 TeV center-of-mass energy. The studied dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 inverse femtobarns. The best fit signal strength for the H to tau tau process is measured to be mu = 1.24 ^{+0.29}/{-0.27}, consistent with standard model predictions. Unique event categories are used targeting the leading Higgs boson production processes, gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, and associated production. This provides signal regions sensitive to Higgs boson couplings to both fermions and vector bosons. These two Higgs boson couplings are measured and are consistent with standard model predictions within one standard deviation. This 5.5 standard deviation observation of the H to tau tau process and the consistency of the Higgs boson couplings with the standard model provide confirmation of the Higgs boson Yukawa couplings to fermions. This is evidence that the Higgs field provides mass for the tau lepton in addition to the vector bosons.

The measurement relies on proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy √s = 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The collected data correspond to the full Run-2 dataset with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb-1. The measured cross sections are used to constrain anomalous Higgs boson interactions in the Effective Field Theory (EFT) framework. The results presented in this thesis represent a reduction by a factor 2 of the different photon and jet energy scale and resolution systematic uncertainties with respect to the previous ATLAS publication. The thesis details the calibration of electron and photon energies in ATLAS, in particular the measurement of the presampler energy scale and the estimation of its systematic uncertainty. This calibration was used to perform a measurement of the Higgs boson mass in the H → γγ and H → 4l channels using the 36 fb−1 dataset.

The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV. The search is performed for two theory models, both of which incorporate the standard model Higgs boson into dark matter production. The signature in both theory models is a standard model Higgs boson plus missing momentum from the dark matter, which does not interact with the CMS detector. This signature is dubbed 'mono-Higgs'. The first theory model uses an additional set of Higgs sector parameters and incorporates a new mediator particle and a pseudoscalar Higgs boson into dark matter production. The second model introduces a new mediator that carries baryon number symmetry. The analysis presented in this thesis is specifically focused on the final state with a standard model Higgs boson decay to [tau] leptons. A range of parameter space is excluded with 95% confidence for both models, and an advanced technique is used to extend the exclusion for a particular range of one model. In the first model, mediator masses between 700 and 1200 GeV are excluded for a pseudoscalar mass of 300 GeV and a dark matter mass of 100 GeV. In the second model, mediator masses up to 500 GeV are excluded for a dark matter mass of 1 GeV.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, I describe the search for a Higgs boson through its decay to a pair of tan leptons with the tau-pair subsequently decaying to ail electron, a muon, and neutrinos. The search is performed using data collected from proton-proton collisions by the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to 5.0 fb-1 of integrated luminosity recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and 19.7 fb-1 at 8 TeV. The expected significance for a Standard Model Higgs boson signal with a mass of 125 GeV is at the level of 1.2 standard deviations for the electron muon tau-pair decay mode. A mild excess of events is seen above the SM background expectation in this decay mode, consistent with a SM Higgs boson of mass 125 GeV. In combination with results using other tau-pair decay modes, an excess of events above the background expectation is seen at the level of 3.4 standard deviations. This constitutes the first evidence for a Higgs boson to decay to leptons. This thesis also describes an analysis of the data in the context of physics beyond the Standard Model, particularly in the framework of its Minimal Supersymnnetric extension.

Each tau lepton decays hadronically or leptonically to an electron or a muon, leading to six different final states for the tau-lepton pair, all considered in this analysis. An excess of events is observed over the expected background contributions, with a local significance larger than 3 standard deviations for m[H] values between 115 and 130 GeV. The best fit of the observed H to tau tau signal cross section for m[H] = 125 GeV is 0.78 +- 0.27 times the standard model expectation. These observations constitute evidence for the 125 GeV Higgs boson decaying to a pair of tau leptons.

In this theorized process, the Standard Model Higgs boson (h) decays to four leptons via two intermediate Beyond-the-Standard-Model particles each called Zd. This process arises from interactions of the Standard Model with a dark sector. A dark sector consists of one or more new particles that have limited or zero interaction with the Standard Model, such as the new vector boson Zd (dark photon). It could have a rich and interesting phenomenology like the visible sector (the Standard Model) and could naturally address many outstanding problems in particle physics. For example, it could contain a particle candidate for dark matter. In particular, Higgs decays to Beyond-the-Standard-Model particles are well-motivated theoretically and are not tightly constrained; current measurements of Standard Model Higgs properties permit the fraction of such decays to be as high as approximately 30%. The results of this search do not show evidence for the existence of the h -> Zd Zd -> 4l process and are therefore interpreted in terms of upper limits on the branching ratio B(h -> Zd Zd) and the effective Higgs mixing parameter kappa^prime.
