Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation, a measurement of CP-violating effects in decays of neutral B meson is presented. The data sample for this measurement consists of about 88 million [Upsilon](4S) [yields] B[bar B] decays collected between 1999 and 2002 with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e[sup +]e[sup -] collider, located at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. One neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in the CP eigenstates J/[psi] K[sub S][sup 0], [psi](2S)K[sub S][sup 0], [chi][sub c1]K[sub S][sup 0], and [eta][sub c]K[sub S][sup 0], or in the flavor eigenstates D(*)[sup -] [pi][sup +]/[rho][sup +]/a[sub 1][sup +] and J/[psi] K*[sup 0] (K*[sup 0] [yields] K[sup +][pi][sup -]). The other B meson is determined to be either a B[sup 0] or a [bar B][sup 0], at the time of its decay, from the properties of its decay products. The proper time [Delta]t elapsed between the decay of the two mesons is determined by reconstructing their decay vertices, and by measuring the distance between them. The CP asymmetry amplitude sin2[beta] is determined by the distributions of [Delta]t in events with a reconstructed B meson in CP eigenstates. The detector resolution and the b-flavor-tagging parameters are constrained by the [Delta]t distributions of events with a fully reconstructed flavor eigenstate. From a simultaneous maximum-likelihood fit to the [Delta]t distributions of all selected events in CP and flavor eigenstates, the value of sin2[beta] is measured to be 0.755 [+-] 0.074(stat) [+-] 0.030(syst). This value is in agreement with the Standard Model prediction, and represents a successful test of the Kobayashi-Maskawa mechanism of CP violation.

Today, however, everything we see, is made almost entirely of matter. A fundamental ingredient to explain this asymmetry between matter and antimatter is the violation of the CP (Charge Parity) symmetry. CP violation has been observed but quantitatively not enough to explain the huge asymmetry. The Belle II experiment in Japan studies the particles produced in electron-positron collisions at the SuperKEKB collider, the highest intensity collider in the World, allowing a high precision measurements of the known sources of CP violation and looking for new ones. In my PhD, I worked on measuring the CP violation in B meson radiative decays (decays with photon in final state) particularly promising thanks to their high sensitivity to possible new processes. Following this analysis, I started a new measurement of the B mesons lifetime where I could verify the robustness of the tools used in the CP violation measurement.

Book excerpt: Production of orbitally excited (L = 1) states of B mesons, B{sup **}, is studied using a sample of nearly ten thousand partially reconstructed B mesons collected with the CDF detector from p{anti p} collisions at (square root)s = 1.8 TeV. Ambiguities in the reconstruction of the B flavor and momentum are resolved. The fraction of b quarks that hadronize into an L = 1 state is measured to be 0.28 " 0.06(stat) " 0.03(syst), and the collective mass of the B{sup **} states is measured to be m(B1) = 5.71 " 0.02 GeV/c2 given the mass splittings between the four states.

Book excerpt: For a long time after the discovery in 1964, by Christenson, Cronin, Fitch and Turlay, that the long-lived neutral kaon decays both into three and into two pions, which has since been taken as proof of CP violation, successive new and more precise experiments confirmed the original evidence and provided results compatible with a phenomenological description confining the CP violation to the mixing between neutral kaons and antikaons. However the Standard Model, with three generations of quarks, linking as it does CP violation to the presence of a single non trivial phase in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix, implies that if CP violation exists at all, then it is a general property of weak interactions, appearing in transitions were amplitudes involving all three quark families interfere with each other, producing effects with a magnitude related to that of the CKM coefficients. This fact has stimulated an impressive amount of theoretical work leading in many cases to precise predictions. This publication reviews the field, from both the theoretical and experimental point of view, while planning for the forthcoming experimentation at LHC and considering possible new facilities for kaon, B meson and neutrino physics.
