En la mayoría de las ocasiones en las que se aborda, el énfasis está en los procesos de valoración de los estudiantes, puesto que este es el interés más importante de los profesores en su práctica docente. Esta es una aproximación que se centra en lo que se conoce como evaluación sumativa. En contraposición a una visión tradicional de la evaluación, como proceso con el que se clasifica a los estudiantes, en las últimas décadas se ha desarrollado la noción de evaluación formativa. Esta idea de evaluación centra su atención en los instrumentos y procedimientos que le permiten al profesor tanto recoger y analizar información para contribuir al aprendizaje de los estudiantes como para mejorar la enseñanza. Con esta visión, los estudiantes pasan de ser quienes proporcionan información para su clasificación a participar activamente en el proceso de evaluación. Por medio de la evaluación formativa, los estudiantes conocen qué es lo que se espera que ellos aprendan, participan en su propia evaluación y la de sus compañeros, y proporcionan información con la que el profesor puede ayudarles a progresar en su aprendizaje. Adicionalmente, el profesor recoge información que le permite revisar la eficacia del proceso de enseñanza para mejorarlo. Pero las instituciones condicionan con frecuencia a los profesores a que produzcan información para clasificar a los estudiantes en un esquema de evaluación sumativa. Además, los programas de formación de profesores tienden a seguir este mismo esquema (Schoenfeld, 2015, p. 193). Esto implica que muchos profesores no conocen instrumentos y procedimientos que les permitan poner en práctica esquemas de evaluación formativa.
