Book excerpt: Fray Luis de Granada, (Luis de Sarria; Granada, 1504-Lisboa, 1588) fue un escritor espa�ol de la orden de los dominicos, destacado confesor de duques y de reyes, y fue el predicador religioso m�s famoso de su tiempo en Espa�a y Portugal. Escribi� la presente obra "Libro de la Oraci�n y Meditaci�n" (1554), la cual es esencialmente did�ctica, en la cual da materia de meditaci�n acerca de los distintos misterios de la fe y de las cosas divinas, ense�a a orar descubriendo tambi�n los peligros que nos acechan en nuestro caminar en la fe. Y en palabras suyas: "...Lo que me movi� a tratar esta materia fue tener entendido que la principal causa de todos los males que hay en el mundo es falta de consideraci�n de las cosas divinas, como lo signific� el profeta Jerem�as cuando dijo: �Asolada y destruida est� toda la tierra, porque no hay quien se pare a pensar con atenci�n las cosas de Dios�. De lo cual parece que la causa de nuestros males no es tanto falta de fe cuanto de consideraci�n de los misterios de nuestra fe. Por donde parece que, aunque los misterios de nuestra fe sean tan poderosos para inclinar los corazones a lo bueno, mas como muchos de los cristianos nunca se ponen a considerar lo que creen, no obran en sus corazones lo que podr�an obrar. Porque as� como dicen los m�dicos que para que las medicinas aprovechen es menester que sean primero actuadas y digeridas en el est�mago con el calor natural -porque de otra manera ninguna cosa aprovechar�an-, as� tambi�n, para que los misterios de nuestra fe nos sean provechosos y saludables, es necesario que sean primero actuados y digeridos en nuestro coraz�n con el calor de la meditaci�n, porque de otra manera nada aprovechar�n...." Pues por esta causa nos es tanto encomendada en las escrituras sagradas la continua consideraci�n y meditaci�n de la ley de Dios y de sus misterios, que es el estudio de la verdadera sabidur�a y para lo cual esta obra ser� de gran ayuda.

Enrique Fernandez explores the ways in which sixteenth and seventeenth-century anatomical research stimulated both a sense of interiority and a fear of that interior’s exposure and punishment by the early modern state. Examining works by Miguel de Cervantes, María de Zayas, Fray Luis de Granada, and Francisco de Quevedo, Fernandez highlights the existence of narratives in which the author creates a surrogate self on paper, then “dissects” it. He argues that these texts share a fearful awareness of having a complex inner self in a country where one’s interiority was under permanent threat of punitive exposure by the Inquisition or the state. A sophisticated analysis of literary, religious, and medical practice in early modern Spain, Fernandez’s work will interest scholars working on questions of early modern science, medicine, and body politics.
