Book Synopsis Medical Cultures of the Early Modern Spanish Empire by : John Slater
Download or read book Medical Cultures of the Early Modern Spanish Empire written by John Slater and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early modern Spain was a global empire in which a startling variety of medical cultures came into contact, and occasionally conflict, with one another. Spanish soldiers, ambassadors, missionaries, sailors, and emigrants of all sorts carried with them to the farthest reaches of the monarchy their own ideas about sickness and health. These ideas were, in turn, influenced by local cultures. This volume tells the story of encounters among medical cultures in the early modern Spanish empire. The twelve chapters draw upon a wide variety of sources, ranging from drama, poetry, and sermons to broadsheets, travel accounts, chronicles, and Inquisitorial documents; and it surveys a tremendous regional scope, from Mexico, to the Canary Islands, the Iberian Peninsula, Italy, and Germany. Together, these essays propose a new interpretation of the circulation, reception, appropriation, and elaboration of ideas and practices related to sickness and health, sex, monstrosity, and death, in a historical moment marked by continuous cross-pollination among institutions and populations with a decided stake in the functioning and control of the human body. Ultimately, the volume discloses how medical cultures provided demographic, analytical, and even geographic tools that constituted a particular kind of map of knowledge and practice, upon which were plotted: the local utilities of pharmacological discoveries; cures for social unrest or decline; spaces for political and institutional struggle; and evolving understandings of monstrousness and normativity. Medical Cultures of the Early Modern Spanish Empire puts the history of early modern Spanish medicine on a new footing in the English-speaking world.

Book Synopsis A Companion to Calderón de la Barca by : Roy Norton
Download or read book A Companion to Calderón de la Barca written by Roy Norton and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2021 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive study of Calderón in EnglishPedro Calderón de la Barca (1600-1681) is one of the most important dramatists - many would say the single most important dramatist - of the Spanish Golden Age. Spain''s dominant and most prestigious playwright for much of the seventeenth century, his work is still regularly staged and translated, influential in more recent times on writers as diverse as Schiller, Shelley and Lorca. The author of around 120 plays (not counting his numerous Corpus Christi autos) in a variety of styles, Calderón is most famous for his stirring dramas, characterized by rhetorically powerful poetry, dramatic structures carefully calibrated to produce poignant echoes, and the fizzing intellectual energy they apply to the age''s ontological, eschatological and political preoccupations. His plays succeed in combining these perennial concerns with compelling plots subtle enough to defy definitive interpretation. As this volume seeks to show, however, Calderón''s comedies deserve equal recognition. Too long stereotyped as a dour, cerebral conservative, this playwright''s comic works are as amusing as they are clever. This Companion is the first comprehensive study of Calderón in English. It provides a rigorous but readable introduction to the man, his work and its legacy. Its chapters - written by leading international comedia specialists - provide an overview of his life, explain his intellectual, social, moral, and literary contexts, and examine his stagecraft, his corpus, and his reception both within and without the Hispanic world up to the twenty-first century. Specific chapters are devoted to La vida es sueño, his most famous work, which appears on many a university syllabus, and to his infamous wife-murder plays.ual recognition. Book Synopsis Conscience on Stage by : Hilaire Kallendorf
Download or read book Conscience on Stage written by Hilaire Kallendorf and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is no accident that some variation of the question 'What should I do?' appears in over three-quarters of the comedic plays of the Spanish Golden Age. Casuistical dialogue was a concern, even an obsession, of Spanish playwrights during the seventeenth century, many of whom were educated by Jesuit casuists. Conscience on Stage is a study of casuistry or case morality as the foundation for a poetics of seventeenth-century Spanish >em>comedias. Hilaire Kallendorf examines the Jesuit upbringing and casuistical education of major playwrights of the Spanish Golden Age, many of whom were also priests, and introduces the vocabulary of casuistry, as expressed in both confessors' manuals and in stage plays. Engaging issues of class, gender, and age to explore scenes of advice-giving and receiving, she demonstrates how the culture-specific construct of 'conscience' in early modern Spain can be recovered by means of a Foucauldian genealogy, which enlists the skills of philology at the service of a larger vision of the history of ideas. This study outlines and reiterates the relationship of theatre to casuistry, the Jesuit contributions to Spanish literary theory and practice, and the importance of casuistry for the study of early modern subjectivity.

Book Synopsis Adapting Spanish Classics for the New Millennium by : Linda M. Willem
Download or read book Adapting Spanish Classics for the New Millennium written by Linda M. Willem and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-30 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twenty-first-century's turn away from fidelity-based adaptations toward more innovative approaches has allowed adapters from Spain, Argentina, and the United States to draw upon Spain's rich body of nineteenth-century classics to address contemporary concerns about gender, sexuality, race, class, disability, celebrity, immigration, identity, social justice, and domestic violence. This book provides a snapshot of visual adaptations in the first two decades of the new millennium, examining how novelistic material from the past has been remediated for today's viewers through film, television, theater, opera, and the graphic novel. Its theoretical approach refines the binary view of adapters as either honoring or opposing their source texts by positing three types of adaptation strategies: salvaging (which preserves old stories by giving them renewed life for modern audiences), utilizing (which draws upon a pre-existing text for an alternative purpose, building upon the story and creating a shift in emphasis without devaluing the source material), and appropriation (which involves a critique of the source text, often with an attempt to dismantle its authority). Special attention is given to how adapters address audiences that are familiar with the source novels, and those that are not. This examination of the vibrant afterlife of classic literature will be of interest to scholars and educators in the fields of adaptation, media, Spanish literature, cultural studies, performance, and the graphic arts.

Download or read book Buchkulturen written by Reinhard Wittmann and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2005 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Spanish Drama of the Golden Age written by Margaret Wilson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-17 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanish Drama of the Golden Age describes this little-known field of European drama. This book describes and analyzes Spanish plays and drama. It reviews the Spanish plays from the 1580s to the death of Pedro Calderon de la Barca in 1681. This text also discusses the controversy to which direction the Spanish theater would take: whether it is for entertainment or a representation of the intellect and emotions. This book describes Miguel de Cervantes, Lope de Vega, and the rise of the Spanish comedia. The text describes how Lope wrote his plays and how he sold them outright to the manager of an acting company, which became its property. The text also describes the life of Tirso de Molina who was often criticized for his cavalier treatment of a historical fact. This book also discusses the works of Ruiz de Alarcon, Guillen de Castro, Velez de Guevara, and Mira de Amescua. This book also assess this period of Spanish drama in terms of the influence of other countries in Europe such as Britain and France. This book can prove valuable for university students of Spanish, Spanish literature teachers to students of sixth forms, and Spanish historians.
