Book Synopsis Copper, Brass and Bronze of Iran by : Anatoli Ivanov
Download or read book Copper, Brass and Bronze of Iran written by Anatoli Ivanov and published by . This book was released on 2019-07-31 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Western Europe the Golden Age of Islamic metalwork in Iran was (and is) generally considered to be the earlier period, and later metalwork was collected almost by accident and has been correspondingly little studied and poorly published, though in recent decades the imbalance has been somewhat modified. The Hermitage Collection, which numbers 162 pieces is the largest collection in the world of later Iranian Islamic metalwork, from the West of Iran as far as the Punjab. The great majority of these are household utensils, and their manufacture is characteristic of the middling levels of urban societies, though in Khurasan in the late-15th and early 16th centuries brasses or bronzes inlaid with gold and silver were made for its Timurid rulers. The substantial numbers of Iranian copper-alloy astronomical instruments of this period were made by different craftsmen, for a different public, and deserve separate treatment, though not magic bowls, used in folk-medicine and divination, which are noticed in this volume. In his Introduction, Anatolii Ivanov gives a valuable directoryof museums and other institutions of the former Soviet Union with significant collections, which complement the holdings of the Hermitage and together amount to a truly substantial corpus. The latter were acquired from private collections, but the core of the collection, from the museum attached to the school of industrial drawing founded by Baron Stieglitz, came to the Hermitage in the 1920s, when this was broken up. As well as minutely detailed descriptions of each piece and analyses of their decoration, Ivanov presents a detailed critical survey of the limited documentary evidence afforded by the inscriptions many pieces bear, which is of permanent value as a basis for further scholars working on later Islamic metalwork in general.

Book Synopsis The Bronzes of Ptolemy II Philadelphus by : Wendy A. Cheshire
Download or read book The Bronzes of Ptolemy II Philadelphus written by Wendy A. Cheshire and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of bronzes from Greco-Roman Egypt offers a wide spectrum of possibilities for researchers in Classical Archaeology and Egyptology alike, but the complexity of many interdisciplinary topics can only be well served through specialized investigations of limited scope. The bronze portrait sculptures of Ptolemy II offer an ideal point of departure for such investigation, since it was during that king's rule that court artists consciously created art forms that fused the style, subject matter and iconography of the artistic heritage of their native subjects with their own Greek traditions. In a time of relative peace, now able to reap the material rewards of the Oriental conquests of Alexander's army, the new Ptolemaic regime fused Greco-Macedonian social and political structures into the established, ancient native infrastructure and guided it to a thriving, productive society.
Book Synopsis Greek Bronzes (Classic Reprint) by : A. S. Murray
Download or read book Greek Bronzes (Classic Reprint) written by A. S. Murray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Bronzes At present we know almost nothing of who the men were who made our bronze statuettes, whether they had been attached to the workshops of sculptors, or whether they were a class by, themselves, standing in much the same relation to the sculptors as the painters of Greek vases stood to the great painters of their day. Most probably they were a class of minor artists created by the constant demand for statuettes to be dedicated in the temples. The excavations on the Acropolis of Athens and at Olympia have shown how vast must have been the number of the statuettes deposited by devotees in these places. On the other hand, it does not follow that the Whole of our bronze statuettes had been made by this special class of craftsmen. We are told of one sculptor whose small models fetched extravagant prices, and We can believe that even greater men than he had occasionally produced statuettes finished with every accuracy of detail, and had allowed them to be cast in bronze. There may have been some etiquette limiting the production of such figures. That we do not know; but certainly not a few of our statuettes are of such excellence that we can hardly believe them to be the work of minor craftsmen, notwithstanding the extraordinary skill we see occasionally displayed by those other craftsmen, the vase-painters.
