On a supposé que l'original de ce type, reproduit de tant de manières différentes, devait être la fameuse statue en bronze que Lysippe avait faite pour les Thespiens, ou bien, peut-être, celle en marbre, et non moins admirée, qui était un des chefs-d'œuvre de Praxitèle; mais ces deux opinions ne reposant, l'une et l'autre, que sur des inductions très légères, nous nous bornerons à ajouter que parmi toutes ces imitations connues, on distingue particulièrement, avec la figure ici décrite, celles qui sont conservées dans les collections du Capitole et du Musée Britannique.
