Book excerpt: Jadeite Objets d’Art Indeed the last great aesthetic discovery of the Emporer Qianlong, reigning from 1736 to 1796, hidden high amid the impenetrable forested hills of remotest Myanmar. Only decades later in 1863 would the French mineralogist Alexis Damour name the stone jadeite. This stone emerged in interesting times, an artistic golden age. The historical carvings of China for nearly seven millennia had given way to a new era. By 1880 impressionism, though disdained early in its day, was well entrenched within the artistic milieu. Affluent British, Americans and to a lesser extent the continental Europeans, the commercial class if you will, demanded new ideas and ornate objects, looking to decoration as a mark at once of quality and change. With centuries of training and skills in the arts and crafts, Chinese artisans developed a unique design and style, in effect an infrastructure, that aesthetically captured the romance and mystery of the orient, and comfortably served as the backdrop for c! arved flowers and dragons alike in rare and important jadeite carvings - carvings of both cabochons and cabinet pieces. The best of both were frequently glorified in opulent settings and homes of the affluent, a fashion trend that continued for decades, concentrated as to its high season from 1900 to 1920, yet ranging from perhaps as early as 1880 to 1940, arguably ending with the all consuming world war. Winds of change were blowing and by 1950 modernism had arrived and with that age the recent past and its relics migrated to the nations’ attics and archives, at least under the best of circumstances. And like those with even the sincerest of intentions and with the greatest respect for the past, the modernists had their respective new era lives to lead. Records lost, writings long since misplaced, carvings cautiously placed in overcrowded musty Victorian attics. And so for decades, the light has been dimly lit, perhaps as Qianlong would have wanted it, yet history has a way! of locating those pilgrims of the past who in retrospect offered a vibrant message and timeless imagery. Jadeite Objets d’Art brings to light an impressive quantity of information on the stone as well as an in-depth analysis of the epic works from the early, middle and late periods these works of art flourished. It features in vivid color many works that have never been published and focuses on seminal carvings, many of which have rarely been seen. No single publication, coupled with an extensive array of images of jadeite carvings, has heretofore concentrated solely on this dramatic and mysterious stone. Significant archival and original records have been carefully and thoroughly researched. Additionally the reader will find critical information on the stone and related data including an historical perspective, mineralization, commercialization and evaluation considerations as well as a cataloged listing of objects from an extensive and important collection and a discussion of certain of the techniques utilized by master artisans of these carvings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging distinctions between fine and decorative art, this book begins with a critique of the Rodin scholarship, to establish how the selective study of his oeuvre has limited our understanding of French nineteenth-century sculpture. The book's central argument is that we need to include the decorative in the study of sculpture, in order to present a more accurate and comprehensive account of the practice and profession of sculpture in this period. Drawing on new archival sources, sculptors and objects, this is the first sustained study of how and why French sculptors collaborated with state and private luxury goods manufacturers between 1848 and 1895. Organised chronologically, the book identifies three historically-situated frameworks, through which sculptors attempted to validate themselves and their work in relation to industry: industrial art, decorative art and objet d'art. Detailed readings are offered of sculptors who operated within and outside the Salon, including S?n, Ch?t, Carrier-Belleuse and Rodin; and of diverse objects and materials, from S?es vases, to pewter plates by Desbois, and furniture by Barbedienne and Carabin. By contesting the false separation of art from industry, Claire Jones's study restores the importance of the sculptor-manufacturer relationship, and of the decorative, to the history of sculpture.

Book excerpt: Challenging the notion that fashion and furniture were or are separate enterprises and distinct material aesthetic traditions, this collection focuses on three material and conceptual links central to understanding the relationship between interior design and fashion-the body, fabric, and space. The volume considers the changing visual, material and spatial character, methodological challenges posed by, and formal, political and historiographical significance of, a wide range of British, European and North American case studies since the eighteenth century. The volume's eleven case studies allow the reader to understand connecting notions behind the formation of interiors and fashionable clothing. The essays combine a wide range of significant and challenging new examples alongside powerful reversionary analyses of the various periods, artists, designers, and their best and significant objects. Fashion, Interior Design and the Contours of Modern Identity is concerned not only with fabric, but also with the body and the implications of embodiment in the practices of both design domains which are equally invested in the comfort, aesthetic pleasure, extension and support of the body in different and yet seemingly identical ways.

Book excerpt: Contemporary society is marked and defined by the ways in which mobile goods, bodies, vehicles, objects, and data are organized, moved and staged. Against the background of the ‘mobilities turn’ this book articulates a new and emerging research field, namely that of ‘mobilities design’. The book revolves around the following research question: How are design decisions and interventions staging mobilities? It builds upon the ‘Staging Mobilities’ model (Jensen 2013) in an exploratory inquiry into the problems and potentials of the design of mobilities. The exchange value between mobilities and design research is twofold. To mobilities research this means getting closer to the ‘material’, and to engage in the creative, exploratory and experimental approaches of the design world which offer new potential for innovative research. Design research, on the other hand, might enter into a fruitful relationship with mobilities research, offering a relational and mobile design thinking and a valuable basis for design reflections around the ubiquitous structures, spaces and systems of mobilities.

Book excerpt: Liberalism, Nationalism and Design Reform in the Habsburg Empire is a study of museums of design and applied arts in Austria-Hungary from 1864 to 1914. The Museum for Art and Industry (now the Museum of Applied Arts) as well as its design school occupies a prominent place in the study. The book also gives equal attention to museums of design and applied arts in cities elsewhere in the Empire, such as Budapest Prague, Cracow, Brno and Zagreb. The book is shaped by two broad concerns: the role of liberalism as a political, cultural and economic ideology motivating the museums’ foundation, and their engagement with the politics of imperial, national and regional identity of the late Habsburg Empire. This book will be of interest for scholars of art history, museum studies, design history, and European history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pieter Coecke van Aelst (1502 – 1550) was renowned throughout Renaissance Europe as a draftsman, painter, and publisher of architectural treatises. The magnificent tapestries he designed were acquired by the wealthiest clients of the day, up to and including rulers such as Emperor Charles V, King Francis I of France, King Henry VIII of England, and Grand Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici of Tuscany. At the same time, Coecke was remarkable not only for the complexity and unparalleled quality of his tapestries, but also for his fluency in various media: this lavishly illustrated volume examines the full range of his work, from tapestry and stained-glass window designs to panel paintings, prints, drawings, and architectural treatises. Though only forty-eight when he died, Coecke was one of the greatest Netherlandish artists of the sixteenth century. His paintings and drawings, initially wrought in the style of the Antwerp Mannerists, evolved through his enthusiastic response to Italian Renaissance design, and influenced generations of artists in his wake. This comprehensive study explores Coecke’s stylistic development, as well as his substantial contribution to the body of great Renaissance art in Flanders. Featuring twenty monumental tapestries, along with many of their cartoons and preparatory sketches, plus seven paintings, additional drawings, and printed matter—many of them newly photographed for this volume—Grand Design provides a thorough reappraisal of Coecke’s work, amply justifying the high regard in which Coecke’s work was held and its wide dissemination long after his death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing from American history, fashion design, history of luxury, visual culture, museum studies, and women’s history, among others, this book explores the challenges, rewards and benefits of teaching business and the labor history of art and design professions to those in higher education. Recognizing that artists and designers are no longer just creatives, but bosses, employees, members of professional associations, and citizens of nations that encourage and restrain their creative work in various ways, the book identifies a crucial need for art and design students to be taught the intricacies of these other roles, as well as how to navigate or challenge them. This empirically driven study features case studies in various pedagogical contexts, including museum exhibitions, group projects, lesson plans, discussion topics, and long-term assignments. The chapters also explore how the roles of designing and making became separated, how new technologies and the rise of mass production affected creative careers, the shifts back and forth between direct employment and freelancing, and the evolution of government interventions in creative fields. With a diverse and experienced range of contributors, and providing a unique set of conceptual tools to interpret, cope with, and react to the ever-changing conditions of capitalism, this volume will appeal to educators and researchers across education, history, art history, and sociology, with interests in experiential learning, capitalism, equity, social justice and neoliberalism.
