Book excerpt: OneCry: A Call to Spiritual Awakening is a challenge, a plea for readers to shake off spiritual apathy and wake up to the hope of God moving with extraordinary power in our day. It paints a picture of both desperation and hope; without spiritual revival our country has no hope, but when it comes we will need no other hope. Drawing on an abundance of stories from ordinary people who have experienced the power of life-changing revival in their own lives, this books provides a contemporary roadmap for spiritual awakening and real revival. Passionate and story-rich, OneCry engages readers to seek God urgently at this moment in history, it inspires them with hope for what God can do, and it invites them to join a growing movement of believers who are uniting in one cry for revival and spiritual awakening. It is a summons to join together in a single focus: passionate prayer for revival in our nation like hasn’t been seen in nearly two hundred years.

Book excerpt: A soldier obeys illegal orders, thinking them lawful. When should we excuse his misconduct as based in reasonable error? How can courts convincingly convict the soldier's superior officer when, after Nuremberg, criminal orders are expressed through winks and nods, hints and insinuations? Can our notions of the soldier's "due obedience," designed for the Roman legionnaire, be brought into closer harmony with current understandings of military conflict in the contemporary world? Mark J. Osiel answers these questions in light of new learning about atrocity and combat cohesion, as well as changes in warfare and the nature of military conflict. Sources of atrocity are far more varied than current law assumes, and such variations display consistent patterns. The law now generally requires that soldiers resolve all doubts about the legality of a superior's order in favor of obedience. It excuses compliance with an illegal order unless the illegality - as with flagrant atrocities - would be immediately obvious to anyone. But these criteria are often in conflict and at odds with the law's underlying principles and policies. Combat and peace operations now depend more on tactical imagination, self-discipline, and loyalty to immediate comrades than on immediate, unreflective adherence to the letter of superiors' orders, backed by threat of formal punishment. The objective of military law is to encourage deliberative judgment. This can be done, Osiel suggests, in ways that enhance the accountability of our military forces, in both peace operations and more traditional conflicts, while maintaining their effectiveness. Osiel seeks to "civilianize" military law while building on soldiers' own internal ideals of professional virtuousness. He returns to the ancient ideal of martial honor, reinterpreting it in light of new conditions, arguing that it should be implemented through realistic training in which legal counsel plays an enlarged role rather than by threat of legal prosecution. Obeying Orders thus offers a compelling answer to the question that has most haunted the moral imagination of the late twentieth century: the roots - and restraint - of mass atrocity in war.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to be a disciple? The call of discipleship is more than programs and Bible study. In King Jesus and the Beauty of Obedience-Based Discipleship, David Young presents a bold call for obedience-based discipleship and argues that it alone is the proper response to the kingship of Jesus. Many have wrongly associated obedience with bad theology, believing that Jesus' demand for obedience is a form of works righteousness or legalism. Others simply don't like obedience and resist the demands Jesus makes in calling us to follow him. But if we surrender to the kingship of Jesus, we will find the life we were designed to live. We are accustomed to calling Jesus "Savior." And we should. But until recently, many in the Western church have not learned to call Jesus "King." The kingship of Jesus has implications for how we live. We can either rebel against him, raising puppet kings and constructing our own kingdoms, or we can submit to him in obedience-based discipleship. Could it be that you are still sitting on the throne of your life, treating King Jesus as a mere advisor? What would change in your life if you started treating Jesus as nothing short of your King? Young unpacks five principles for those who wish to follow Jesus as King. Surrender to the authority of King Jesus Embrace the mission of King Jesus Live immersed in King Jesus Obey the teachings of King Jesus Behold the presence of King Jesus Following these five steps awakens us to a life truly worth living, a life of power, peace, beauty, and love. This is eternal life, that we would know and follow Jesus as King of the Universe, and king over our lives. After all, you don’t merely believe in kings. You obey them.

But how are we to obey the Word of God - reluctantly, casually, or committedly? The Word answers the question, when it says, "Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the Voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His Commandments which I command you, that the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth" (Jas 1:22; Deut. 28:1). We are to obey the Word of God diligently, carefully, committedly, and consistently, whether or not it seems difficult. God rewards obedience and punishes disobedience.

Book excerpt: The author of Desiring God reveals the biblical evidence to help us see and savor what the pleasures of God show us about Him. Includes a study guide for individual and small-group use. Isn’t it true—we really don’t know someone until we understand what makes that person happy? And so it is with God! What does bring delight to the happiest Being in the universe? John Piper writes, that it’s only when we know what makes God glad that we’ll know the greatness of His glory. Therefore, we must comprehend “the pleasures of God.” Unlike so much of what is written today, this is not a book about us. It is about the One we were made for—God Himself. In this theological masterpiece—chosen by World Magazine as one of the 20th Century’s top 100 books, John Piper reveals the biblical evidence to help us see and savor what the pleasures of God show us about Him. Then we will be able to drink deeply—and satisfyingly—from the only well that offers living water. What followers of Jesus need now, more than anything else, is to know and love—behold and embrace—the great, glorious, sovereign, happy God of the Bible. “This is a unique and precious book that everybody should read more than once.” —J.I. PACKER, Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inability to obey God and respect His arrangements on earth is as a result of ignorance of who God is and the power of His Word. The entrance of the Word of God into our minds would enlighten the ignorant. This first publication in our series on obeying God focuses on the family, being the nucleus of the society. The clich charity begins at home is truer in the issues of this discourse than anywhere else. A disordered family is like a ship whose captain is without honor. The ripples of this disaster affect the whole community. Giving the attributes of honor to our parents and elders is commanded. It must be given to our parents or elders as it would be taken in turns as the children of today become the elders of tomorrow. It is not negotiated with conditions attached and God commands it. In their own interest, elders have the responsibility of forgiving offending young ones unreservedly and should pray for them because of their future. Consider the Benefit of Obeying God 1 explains these scriptural precepts with exquisite examples endued with amazing consistency, simplicity, and clarity. The first step to prevent or mitigate disordered society is to teach order in the family Gods own way. Honoring parents is honoring the God that commands it. There are benefits of honoring parents and consequences for refusing to obey this Gods command. This book searches the Scriptures balanced doctrine on this issue and presents it for the benefit of all persons that have the opportunity to read it. It also provides a teaching base for those who may wish to use it as a teaching tool with our permission. Hence it is beneficial to teachers, hearers of all age groups, and the society at large.

Book excerpt: Jesus said, "If you love me, keep my commandments." For the Christian, obedience to Christ is axiomatic, it goes without saying. But what many do not understand is that godly obedience is the way to a life characterized by a peace, joy , and freedom that the world cannot know. We don't obey God to gain our salvation. Salvation is God's free gift through faith in the work of Jesus Christ in His life, death, and resurrection. But once saved, a Christian is given a deep desire to love God and want to obey. This book is a study of the way to do that very thing.
