This has love, hate, conspiracy, friendship, hatred, loyalty, treachery and all other such emotions. Before the great war of Mahabhrat, the great continent of India was full of brave hearts and warriors, but after the war was over, only a few warriors survived in this land. This war of Mahabharat was the result of two pledges; one that was taken by Pitamah Bhisma and the other pledge that was taken by the ruler of Gandhar, Shakuni. If Bhisma Pitamah had not taken the pledge that he would not sit on the throne, there would have been no chance that this war would have happened and if Shakuni had not taken the pledge that he would destroy the Kuru dynasty, then he would have never left Gandhar and come to Hastinapur; this would ensure that the seed of enmity between the Kauravas and Pandavas would have never grown. The situational pledges that were taken by Bhisma and Shakuni, later on turned into a curse for them. The almighty created such a situation, that both of them started regretting their decisions of taking such pledges. Shakuni never knew that, the sister he loved more that his life would one day be married to the same kuru dynasty, whose destruction has been pledged by him. I have tried to enlighten many unknown facts about the life of Shakuni so that the readers could know more and more about Shakuni. This is my first composition and I would like to dedicate this to, not only my late heavenly mother, but all other mothers too. Since father, brother and other such relations can be formed again, but the selfless love of a mother, once lost can never be found again. The pain of losing one’s mother in childhood and not finding mother like love again, stays with you forever like emptiness. Maybe this pain encourages me to hold the pen and start writing.

Book excerpt: Alana Graham is a teacher, a friend, and a daughter: she is the woman next door. What she hides from the world is the double-life she leads. Setting out on a three-month road trip across the country, Alana seeks rejuvenation and fulfillment among the mountains. What she discovers will send her on a journey that will forever change her life. In search of an escape from her arduous teaching career, Alana finds endless prairie, towering peaks, and fulfillment beyond her wildest expectations. Throughout her journey, she encounters a wide array of individuals, including a boisterous Mexican woman who sends her on a treasure hunt, a modern-day mountain man living in an abandoned gold mine, a preaching doctor who baptizes believers in the muddy Missouri River, a loving family of six on the prairie, and a myriad of beloved and loyal friendships. Alana's soul-searching story brings forth a connection to any individual who has wondered: "Is there more to life than just this?" Through a series of benevolent friendships, Alana learns that she cannot escape the past, and the consequences of her mistakes will follow her wherever she goes. Over endless miles of prairie, ascending rock-strewn summits, and swimming in mountain streams, Alana discovers that the treasure she seeks in life is not what she had imagined. Will Alana sacrifice the life she leads for the freedom she longs for?

Book excerpt: The Prussian province of Saxony-where the Communist uprising of March 1921 took place and two Combat Leagues (Wehrverb nde) were founded (the right-wing Stahlhelm and the Social Democratic Reichsbanner) - is widely recognized as a politically important region in this period of German history. Using a case study of this socially diverse province, this book provides a comprehensive analysis of political violence in Weimar Germany with particular emphasis on the political culture from which it emerged. It refutes both the claim that the Bolshevik revolution was the prime cause of violence, and the argument that the First World War's all-encompassing "brutalization" doomed post-1918 German political life from the very beginning. The study thus contributes to a view of the Weimar Republic as a state in severe crisis but with alternatives to the Nazi takeover.
