Download or read book Near the Exit written by Lori Erickson and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2019-08-13 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An ideal guidebook to facing the inevitable." Foreword Reviews After her brother died unexpectedly and her mother moved into a dementia-care facility, spiritual travel writer and Episcopal deacon Lori Erickson felt called to a new quest: to face death head on, with the eye of a tourist and the heart of a pastor. Blending memoir, spirituality, and travel, Near the Exit examines how cultures confront and have confronted death, from Egypt's Valley of the Kings and Mayan temples, to a Colorado cremation pyre and Day of the Dead celebrations, to Maori settlements and tourist-destination graveyards. Erickson reflects on mortalityâ€"the ways we avoid it, the ways we cope with it, and the ways life is made more precious by accepting itâ€"in places as far away as New Zealand and as close as the nursing home up the street. Throughout her personal journey and her travels, Erickson  helps us to see that one of the most life-affirming things we can do is to invite death along for the ride.

Book Synopsis The Black Angel by : Timothy Parrott
Download or read book The Black Angel written by Timothy Parrott and published by . This book was released on 2013-08-08 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fall of 1913, a statue of a crestfallen angel was erected in Iowa City's Oakland Cemetery. During the intervening century, this macabre memorial to the Feldwert family has spawned a number of sinister legends, primarily due to its atypical posture and coloration. But did these spine-chilling tales arise solely from the downcast aspect and blackness of the angel? Definitely not! Theresa Dolezal Feldwert was an enigmatic as the statue she commissioned. An elderly widow as well as a wheelchair-bound amputee almost certainly suffering from clinical depression, Feldwert inadvertently contributed to the legends herself. Her lifelong career as a midwife formed the basis of her public persona, and the historical association between midwifery and witchcraft would not have been lost on the Iowa City community. This professional stigma, coupled with Feldwert's often eccentric behavior, provided a feast of fodder for local storytellers. This true account of the mysterious Feldwert memorial and the even more mystifying woman behind it sheds much-needed light on the legends of the Black Angel - legends which continue to be told to the present day.
