Book Synopsis A Samoan Reading of Discipleship in Matthew by : Vaitusi Nofoaiga
Download or read book A Samoan Reading of Discipleship in Matthew written by Vaitusi Nofoaiga and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional understanding of discipleship in many Christian communities considers church needs and demands to be more important than family duties and responsibilities. To be a disciple requires one to abandon family and follow Jesus into (as if to colonize) the world. Public criticism of this understanding is emerging from Samoans who also question the relevance of traditional Christian teachings. When pondered with regard to people (patrons) and institutons (church), discipleship becomes an exercise in and an expression of power. Under the influence of the Samoan tautua (servant), for whom the needs of family and local people are foremost, and approaches in biblical criticism that affirm locatedness of readers, this book offers an alternative understanding of discipleship. Discipleship is also about place, which might be in-between spaces. Nofoaiga in this book offers tautuaileva (service in-between spaces) readings of Matthew 4:12-25 and 7:24-8:22 that emphasize place (Galilee) as well as the marginalized and excluded (the crowd).

Download or read book Henry Venn--Missionary Statesman written by Wilbert R. Shenk and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-01-30 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Venn was born and bred among the British evangelical aristocracy at Clapham. Wilberforce, Grant, Macaulay, Stephen, and Thornton were at the height of their powers -- leading the campaign against slavery, promoting public morals, founding philanthropic and missionary societies -- at the turn of the nineteenth century. As powerful leader of the most prominent British missionary society from 1841 to 1872, Venn unhesitatingly used his connections with politicians and statesmen to further the missionary cause. He often found himself at odds with government, but he mastered the art of lobbying skillfully for his interest. Henry Venn was a man of generous hospitality who entertained countless guests in his home. Sir Leslie Stephen, his nephew, conjectured that in evangelical circles noted for their somber mood Venn must have been something of an embarrassment with his irrepressible humor. Venn was an outstanding administrator. Early on he perceived the need to provide the missionary movement with a clear theoretical framework. Out of his search for principles of missionary action emerged the indigenous church ideal that has figured prominently in all missionary thinking since.

Download or read book Samoan Reference Grammar written by Ulrike Mosel and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 856 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samoan Reference Grammar is the first extensive grammar of Samoan, by number of speakers the largest Polynesian language. The grammar is divided into eighteen chapters which cover phonetics, phonology, and orthography, word classification and morphology, the syntax of various types of phrases, simple clause structure, nominalization, dependent clauses, coordination, and finally, case marking and grammatical relations. The descriptive framework is not tied to a particular linguistic theory, but is based on the empirical findings of linguistic typology during the last two decades. The grammar is descriptive in the sense that it takes the Samoan ways of expression as the starting point of analysis and describes the meanings which are encoded by the various types of construction.
