Book excerpt: O presente trabalho consiste em um estudo de caso da experiência de inclusão de alunos com deficiência em classes regulares do ensino Fundamental (quatro primeiros anos) na Rede Municipal de Educação de Santo André, matriculados nos anos de 1998 a 2001. O problema em questão, parte do reconhecimento que os diferentes tipos de deficiências geram dificuldades distintas de escolarização e ao mesmo tempo, aliadas a esse último fator, a condição sócio-econômica e cultural da família também exerce influência na formação escolar desses alunos. Dadas as características da pesquisa, o objetivo foi de analisar a progressão escolar de alunos com deficiência auditiva, física, mental, visual, múltipla e com distúrbio geral de desenvolvimento incluídos no ensino regular, levando em consideração as variáveis decorrentes: do tipo de deficiência; das condições sócio-econômico-cultural das famílias; das unidades escolar(es) cursadas; do tipo de serviço de apoio que recebem. Os dados foram colhidos em documentos do prontuário do aluno e em entrevistas com a Gerente de Educação Especial e com os Professores Assessores de cada área da deficiência. Como conclusão, a experiência de Santo André, demonstra que a manutenção de uma política de educação inclusiva necessita de articulação da educação com órgãos governamentais e não governamentais nas áreas da saúde, esporte, cultura, lazer, transporte, assistência social, assistência judiciária, educação profissionalizante e defesa dos direitos. Os dados relativos às questões sócio-econômicas da família: nível de escolaridade dos pais, convênio médico, tratamento clínico, renda per capta, possibilitaram a confirmação da hipótese de que os alunos pesquisados pertencem, em sua maioria, às camadas populares, que vivem na exclusão dos direitos básicos de cidadania. Dos 106 alunos pesquisados: 7% evadiram-se; 41% estão na condição de "permanecentes" com uma média de 2 anos nesta condição; 15% estão estudando na idade própria e 38% concluíram o curso. Dos 40 alunos que concluíram, 25 foram alfabetizados e 15 não atingiram este objetivo.
