Book Synopsis Religions, Reasons and Gods by : John Clayton
Download or read book Religions, Reasons and Gods written by John Clayton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-11-25 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional theistic proofs are often understood as evidence intended to compel belief in a divinity. John Clayton explores the surprisingly varied applications of such proofs in the work of philosophers and theologians from several periods and traditions, thinkers as varied as Ramanuja, al-Ghazali, Anselm, and Jefferson. He shows how the gradual disembedding of theistic proofs from their diverse and local religious contexts is concurrent with the development of natural theologies and atheism as social and intellectual options in early modern Europe and America. Clayton offers a fresh reading of the early modern history of philosophy and theology, arguing that awareness of such history, and the local uses of theistic argument, offer important ways of managing religious and cultural difference in the public sphere. He argues for the importance of historically grounded philosophy of religion to the field of religious studies and public debate on religious pluralism and cultural diversity.
Book Synopsis The Cambridge Companion to the Summa Theologiae by : Philip McCosker
Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to the Summa Theologiae written by Philip McCosker and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-13 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguably the most influential work of systematic theology in the history of Christianity, Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologiae has shaped all subsequent theology since it was written in the late thirteenth century. This Companion features essays from both specialists in Aquinas' thought and from constructive contemporary theologians to demonstrate how to read the text effectively and how to relate it to past and current theological questions. The authors thoroughly examine individual topics addressed in the Summa, such as God, the Trinity, eternity, providence, virtue, grace, and the sacraments, making the text accessible to students of all levels. They further discuss the contextual, methodological, and structural issues surrounding the Summa, as well as its interaction with a variety of religious traditions. This volume will not only allow readers to develop a comprehensive multi-perspectival understanding of Aquinas' main mature theological work, but also promote dialogue about the vital role of the Summa in theology today.
Book Synopsis Nyāyakusumāñjali of Udayanācārya by : Udayanācārya
Download or read book Nyāyakusumāñjali of Udayanācārya written by Udayanācārya and published by Indian. This book was released on 1996 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: Nyayakusumanjali, one of the most important anchor-works of the Nyaya philosophy, is composed by Udayanacarya, the great ancient Indian thinker, commentator, author and master stylist in recondite Sanskrit prose. This work is one of the two major magna opera of Udayanacarya, the other being Atmatattvaviveka, which is wholly devoted to a thorough criticism of all the basic doctrines of Buddhism. Unlike Atmatattvaviveka, Nyayakusumanjali is primarily concerned with the exposition and argumentative defence of the Nyaya doctrines-especially those relating to its methodology-against the corresponding but opposed doctrines of Mimamsa and Vaisesika. A unique feature of this work is that it brings forward a large number of inferential proofs to establish the reality of god, which is almost a totally-neglected topic in all the earlier basic works on Nyaya. Even the aphorisms of Gotama, supposed to be the primary source of Nyaya philosophy, make only a passing and oblique reference to god in a single aphorism. Udayanacarya is perhaps the first great Naiyayika of ancient India who introduced theism in a big way both in the Nyaya and the Vaisesika schools of Indian philosophy. In the first volume of Nyayakusumanjali, Professor Dravid has translated and explained the text of Nyaya kusumanjali, passage by passage, while in the second volume, he has presented an analytical critical survey of the contents of the whole work.

Book Synopsis Definition and Induction by : Kisor Kumar Chakrabarti
Download or read book Definition and Induction written by Kisor Kumar Chakrabarti and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1995-03-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Definition is an important scientific and philosophical method. In all kinds of scientific and philosophical inquiries definition is provided to make clear the characteristics of the things under investigation. Definition in this sense, sometimes called real definition, should state the essence of the thing defined, according to Aristotle. In another (currently popular) sense, sometimes called nominal definition, definition explicates the meaning of a term already in use in an ordinary language or the scientific discourse or specifies the meaning of a new term introduced in an ordinary language of the scientific discourse. Definition combines the purposes of both real and nominal definition and is promoted by the Nyaya philosophers of India. Another important method of science and philosophy is induction. In a narrow sense induction is a method of generalization to all cases from the observation of particular cases. In a broad sense induction is a method for reasoning from some observed fact to a different fact not involved in the former. We understand induction in the broad sense though more often we shall actually be concerned with induction in the narrow sense. How can our limited experience of nature provide the rational basis for making knowlege claims about unobserved phenomena?
Book Synopsis The Mughals and the Sufis by : Muzaffar Alam
Download or read book The Mughals and the Sufis written by Muzaffar Alam and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2021-08-01 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a critical study of a large number of contemporary Persian texts, court chronicles, epistolary collections, and biographies of sufi mystics, The Mughals and the Sufis examines the complexities in the relationship between Mughal political culture and the two dominant strains of Islam's Sufi traditions in South Asia: one centered around orthodoxy, the other focusing on a more accommodating and mystical spirituality. Muzaffar Alam analyses the interplay of these elements, their negotiation and struggle for resolution via conflict and coordination, and their longer-term outcomes as the empire followed its own political and cultural trajectory as it shifted from the more liberal outlook of Emperor Akbar "The Great" (r. 1556–1605) to the more rigid attitudes of his great-grandson, Aurangzeb 'Alamgir (r. 1658–1701). Alam brings to light many new and underutilized sources relevant to the religious and cultural history of the Mughals and reinterprets well-known sources from a new perspective to provide one of the most detailed and nuanced portraits of Indian Islam under the Mughal Empire available today.
