Unter neuen Medien werden dabei das Mobiltelefon sowie das Internet verstanden. Die starke Verbreitung von Computern und dem Internetzugang (unter Jugendlichen) begann in den 90er Jahren. So prognostizierte Rammert 1993, dass im Jahr 2000 der Computer zur Standardausrüstung in privaten Haushalten gehören würde. Und tatsächlich stieg die Zahl der internetfähigen Computer in privaten Haushalten von Ende der 90er Jahre (1997) bis zum Jahr 2003 von 4,1 Millionen Online-Nutzer auf 34,4 Millionen Nutzer an. Gerade junge Menschen sind offen für neue Medien und nutzen diese verstärkt. So setzen auch in Schulen immer mehr Lehrer voraus, dass die Schüler nicht nur über Internetzugang verfügen, sondern auch damit umzugehen wissen. Ähnlich ist die Verbreitung des Handys verlaufen, wobei mehr Jugendliche über ein eigenes Handy verfügen, wie über einen Internetzugang zuhause. So stellte die JIM Studie 2005 fest, das 92% der Jugendlichen ein eigenes Handy besitzen. Der Handybesitz hat in den letzten Jahren stark zugenommen, 1998 besaßen nur 8% der Jugendlichen ein eigenes Handy, 2002 waren es bereits 82%. Die erwähnten neuen Medien, Internet und Handy, haben besonders bei Jugendlichen eine sehr starke Verbreitung gefunden. Sie werden als Status-Symbol angesehen, gelten als wichtig und sind unter Jugendlichen oftmals „das Gesprächsthema“. Für die Gruppe der Jugendlichen stellt sich nun die Frage, wie sie mit den neuen Medien umgehen. Gibt es Gefahren für diese Gruppe, die von den Möglichkeiten der Medien ausgehen, oder sind mehr Chancen gegeben? Und gibt es Unterschiede zwischen Jugendlichen, wie die neuen Medien genutzt werden; nutzen beispielsweise Jugendliche mit unterschiedlicher Bildung die Medien gleich oder gibt es gravierende Unterschiede? Gibt es geschlechtsspezifische Unterschiede oder altersmäßige innerhalb der Gruppe der Jugendlichen? Wer nutzt die neuen Medien am häufigsten und wie werden sie genutzt? Diesen Fragen wird nachgegangen, wobei die neuen Medien von vielen Jugendlichen als ihr Tor zur Welt verstanden werden.

In keeping with the aims of TRAC, several papers make make innovative use of interdisciplinary theory: in humanistic geography, philosophy and archaeology; social psychology; and the cognitive science of religion in the study of Roman monuments, military social history and religion. Other papers share a common theme: the critical interpretation of archaeological evidence. A more careful consideration of non-grave good pottery sherds from graves suggests that these often disregarded items potentially shed light on funerary rites which are usually considered to be invisible; the potential importance of plant remains, particularly of exotic and rare species, in ritual deposits is examined and a new perspective on the negative aspects of Roman conquest of Northern Gaul presented. New approaches towards our understanding of space and landscape in the Roman world comprise an examination of the suburbs of ancient Rome and preliminary results of an ongoing project exploring the relationship between wetland landscapes and domestic settlements, presenting a case study from Spain.
