Book excerpt: Today, the new Indonesian capital city, Nusantara, planning is being anticipated as “representing national identity,” “a model city,” or “a gift to the world,” and many other extraordinary labels. This book examines the reality of an ongoing developmental transformation of the Nusantara beyond those labels. It approaches its assemblage of humans, their works (plans, documents, policies, and others), non-human objects (biodiversity, landscape, geography, physical infrastructure, buildings, and public spaces), processes, social relationships, social infrastructures, and others. It is organized into three themes—mimicry, friction, and resonance. The mimicry illustrates the similarities (and differences) between Nusantara and other capital cities in urban narratives, imageries, and forms. The friction studies how Nusantara moves actors who do not always agree, processes that do not always align or collaboration between diverse contradicting groups that intersect. The resonance observes how Nusantara resonates with, yet communicates its voice toward, the world. The three concepts (originated from geography, anthropology, and sociology) frame the analytics of the various contributions of local and foreign scientists from multiple disciplines. Overall, the book recommends “Otorita Ibu Kota Nusantara” (Nusantara capital city authority) on the current experimentation and implementation of the urban vision and provides a reference for social scientists to study Nusantara. And more broadly, the book offers the current socio-spatial practices of capital city-making in Asia that are valuable for the region.

Book excerpt: Made in Nusantara serves as a comprehensive introduction to the history, sociology, ethnography, and musicology of historical and contemporary popular music in maritime Southeast Asia. Each essay covers major figures, styles, and social contexts of genres of a popular nature in the Nusantara region including Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, and the Philippines. Through a critical investigation of specific genres and their spaces of performance, production, and consumption, the volume is organised into four thematic areas: 1) issues in Nusantara popular music; 2) history; 3) artists and genres; and 4) national vs. local industries. Written by scholars working in the region, Made in Nusantara brings local perspectives to the history and analysis of popular music and critically considers conceptualisations developed in the West, rendering it an intriguing read for students and scholars of popular and global music.

This volume will be of interest to policymakers, Indonesia’s neighbours near and far, prospective investors, and students of Indonesia who wish to understand the complex challenges underlying this megaproject. "The chapters in this book are important contributions to the study of Indonesia today …. Ground-breaking and meticulously documented using post-independence archival material and contemporary essays on new capitals …. Essential reading for a better understanding of the impetus behind Nusantara, made even more critical as the future of Nusantara hangs in the balance.” -- Edward Lee Kwong Foo, Chairman of Indofood Agri Resources Ltd and former Singapore’s Ambassador to Indonesia, 1994–2006

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since its first appearance in Russian literature in the 11th century, Nusantara, then a legendary country somewhere in the isles 'beyond India', next to Paradise, has continually stirred the imagination of Russian men of letters. Early Russian writers saw it as a fabulous land allegedly visited by Alexander the Great and saintly pilgrims, and the home of pious Rahmans, monsters and allegorical animals--a land that knew no injustice and which thus provided an ideal setting for social utopias. Russian classics like Pushkin, Goncharov, and Turgenev, and especially the writers of the Silver Age (Bryusov, Balmont, and Bunin), created a different image of Nusantara: Nusantara the exotic, a land of refined aromas and deadly poisons, of tropical flowers and ancient temples, which comprised a constellation of irresistibly attractive far-off islands offering an imaginary refuge from the humdrum of the real world. In the works of the Soviet poets (Gorodetsky, Tikhonov, and Simonov), finally, Nusantara the exotic was supplanted by Nusantara the ideological arena--the region of working masses suffering under the yoke of colonialism and of communists fighting for a brighter future. The first section of this book--intended for both Southeast Asianists and Slavic scholars--offers a survey of Russian images of Nusantara from their genesis and sources (old Byzantine and modern Western) through their nine-century evolution. The second section contains a comprehensive selection of excerpts from literary works (in both English translation and the Russian original) in which these images are elaborated. The third section supplements the other two with a variety of rare materials relating to the topic of the book as well as with traditional Malay writings about Russia.

Nusantara - A Sea of Tales is the most comprehensive collection of folktales, fairy tales, myths and legends from the Nusantara and Southeast Asian region, and was written to sit alongside the great anthologies of folklore from other parts of the world. Although it is impossible to trace the origins of most of these traditional tales, we do know that these stories were used as a means to discover ourselves and the world around us. Like a living creature, these tales came into existence at some point, and have since evolved and adapted to suit the needs of the community that it finds itself in. The seafaring nature of the people in this region has no doubt contributed to the spread of these tales and explains the fascinating variations across Southeast Asia. These rich and layered tales contain all manner of wonder, marvels and strange curiosities, and have been written to enthral a new audience. The author has delved into the history and the meaning behind these tales but like all good fairy tales and folktales, each reader will extract their own meaning from these stories. The symbols in these stories engage our imagination and challenges us to question, discuss and unravel life's conflicts and mysteries. Herein lies the true power of these stories and the reason why these tales must be preserved and allowed to live and breathe once more.

Book excerpt: "The ten chapters in this volume represent a breakthrough in the study of the Social Sciences and Humanities crafted by the professors and graduate students of the Faculty of Cultural Studies of the University of Indonesia (Universitas Indonesia). Taken together, these fascinating studies of Indonesian textual, cultural and social traditions represent the beginning of a process of formulating the study of the humanities and social sciences of one of Indonesia's premier universities as "interpretive communities" that can bring contemporary methods and methodologies to bear on the study of contemporary society, the historical legacies of contemporary society and the many forms of local knowledge found are a part of the fabric of Indonesian life. The title of the work "Local Knowledge of Nusantara" invokes both the growing importance of traditional cultural and social patterns in formulating Indonesian identities, and through the term Nusantara the long and colorful cultural history of Indonesia as a geographical area encompassing diverse cultures that yet share common goals and aspirations. The riches of the local wisdom of Nusantara are revealed in these chapters through the study of inscriptions, manuscripts, storytelling traditions, rituals, musical performances and social patterns that constitute the fabric of life in this great island nation. The geographical and cultural spread of the chapters is quite broad, ranging from a study of the asymmetrical marriage system of the Angkola Batak ethnicity of Sumatra and its role in preserving cultural autonomy to studies of performance practices of the Betawi ethnicity of the Jakarta region of Java and the Banjar ethnicity of southern Kalimantan (Borneo) Such diversity makes the book an important reference work for students and professionals in the Social Sciences and Humanities, as well as for members of the reading public with an interest in comparing cultural identities and local wisdom from different ethnicities of Nusantara through manuscripts, inscriptions, oral traditions and socio-cultural practices. The volume brings to public attention two important issues related to Nusantara's local wisdom. These are how oral tradition becomes a space for storing collective memories and how Nusantara's local cultures survive and adapt themselves to transformations in contemporary society. Due to the highly diverse nature of the data that forms the basis of these studies, the theories, approaches and methods of research offered in this book are also various. Several important manuscripts and inscriptional records are studied using the approaches of philology and codicology. The study of oral tradition, on the other hand, has been carried out through ethnographic work, specifically through interviews and field observation. The authors of several chapters have put into practice a number of differing theoretical approaches including structuralism and the emerging discipline of memetic studies, while others look to studies of intertextuality, ethnography, and sociology. These methodologies have been applied to the study of textual, performance and social practices represented in the volume in ways that are sure to spark the interest of a wide readership"--
